Dr. Domush did my hysterectomy 5 years ago.
I came to him at age 30 with a nasty case of uterine fibroids & adenomyosis.
He gave me all the options possible: laparoscopic myomectomy, open abd myomectomy, uterine fibroid embolization, etc. etc. etc.
I told him, I want a GODDAMN hysterectomy. I want it out. I am sick of the excruciating pain and TAKE IT OUT NOW. Every time I went to an office visit, he spent lots of time with me explaining all of the risks/benefits/repercussions/etc. ("But what if you change your mind and want a baby later....?") It seemed that he really, truly wanted me to make the right decision.
He spent a lot of time with me and we debated heartily over the surgical options. For example, I asked, "Shouldn't I get rid of my cervix, so I'll never get cervical cancer?" He shouted, "NO! No way! You need that for structure! Absolutely, you're going to keep the cervix! You're not even a cervical cancer risk!" (I needed a surgeon that's opinionated, 'cause I didn't know whether I wanted a f***ing cervix or not)
Dr. Domush had strong opinions about the way we were going to do the hysto, but of course he let me know that ultimately everything was my decision.
So I finally got my way-- an open abdominal supra-cervical hysterectomy (yeah, I still have my ovaries of course).
I feel like he did a great job-- everything went great. My bikini-line scar looks fantastic-- just a shiny little line that he carefully hid beneath a crease in my skin. He explained to me that I was getting a plastic-surgery style incision and explained why he placed "2mm below the crease"-- he wanted it to look as good as possible of course. I was really nervous so I didn't even know to ask him for these kind of things.
I feel like he did a great job inside and out. The scar looks great and I healed well on the inside. Now that I'm all healed up, I never have pain or weird feelings in the surgical area, like some people do. I am so relieved. No pain, no period, no problems! Just what I wanted.
I am so glad I went to him first. I chose him initially because of his personality-- for some reason I felt like I could trust him-- but now I am convinced that he's a top-quality surgeon.
Dr. Domush is like an old-fashioned, New York accent... grandpa / favorite uncle-type of guy that is the size of a grizzly bear. The kind of guy who will heartily laugh and would slap you on the back (if it wouldn't knock you over). He always looks absolutely thrilled to see me... but reading the Yelp reviews, I realize that he treats a lot of patients kindly.
Yes, he does call me sweetie, honey, etc. and i like it. The way he says it makes me feel cared for, like a cherished niece or daughter. If you are uncomfortable with that, you could go to Alison Jacoby, who is another EXCELLENT surgeon but who has a quiet, conservative demeanor.
I like visiting Dr. D for checkups-- his receptionists, nurses and NPs have all been nice to me. Then when Dr. D comes in, he acts like it's an *unexpected treat* to see me sitting there!
It makes the dreaded gyno visits so much nicer. read more
