Maybe Dollarama should seriously consider changing its name, as it has been years since it was an…read moreactual "dollar store." Items can now cost up to about $5 each. They also have a strict no refunds or exchange policy, which was less of a concern when otems were actually one dollar each. I have read that they might give refunds on defective items, but their policy is badly written and unclear. I won't say you won't find some good value items, but you really need to evaluate the quality of something before purchasing it. I have bought several times that broke or no longer worked shortly after purchase. These include flashlights and clothing clips. These are concerns that probably apply to all Dollarama stores, but I have a particular concern with this one store at 295 Portage Avenue in Winnipeg. Here they have completely gotten rid of all cashiers, as far as I can tell on the few occasions I have been there in the last few months. There is usually someone available to assist you, but they seem pretty stressed out trying to take care of everyone and everything. Instead, you have no choice but to scan all of your own items. (At least some other companies whose stores have these kind of machines still let you go to a cashier, such as Shoppers Drug Mart, No Frills, Safeway, etc.) On a marginally more positive note, you can use cash at these machines. The worst part of the do-it-yourself-scan system at this location on Portage Avenue is the sheer number of cameras you are on as you approach one machine. It is at least four, as the machines all appear in very close proximity to one another, and you will actually see yourself on all the large monitors above them as you move toward any one of them. I understand that they might have a shopliftimg problem, but this level of invasiveness is absolutely absurd! Not only do you have to do all the work of a cashier, but you have to be filmed from multiple angles. All this for generally low quality items that are no longer truly low cost. I won't tolerate this for myself. Interestingly, not all the Dollarama stores in Winnipeg have the same requirement to have all the cuatomers do their own scanning. Some still have cashiers, last I checked. I truly hope they won't be replaced with these terrible machines.
