Some stores look closed, but don't be fooled... this place is large and it's easy to get lost. There weren't many visitors or customers walking around. I do worry about if this place will sustain another generation. Circumstances brought me to this unique and fun store that is practically hidden on the first floor of what appeared to be an abandoned mall in Chinatown, the Bamboo Plaza. Had I not known about this store and its location before visiting, I probably would not have entered the plaza. Upon entering, I was immediately greeted by Natalie one of the store owners. I then met with Alan, her husband and co-owner. Both were super personable, friendly and knowledgeable. I overheard them conversing about some of the products with other customers in the store. They really knew their product. The store was jampacked with products from floor to ceiling. I was overwhelmed with how much there was to see. There were so many different model kits to choose from (Pokemon, Bandai, Gundam, etc.). They also had figurines, model paint, books, stickers, Gundam decals, Book Nook and Wonderland items, Pokemon Mini Building Blocks, other building blocks, DVDs and other fun items. Everything was well stocked and neatly organized. I appreciated that most of the items were displayed behind glass so that you could see the actual product vs just looking at the picture on the box. Even though I am an adult, I felt like a kid in a candy store. My Linh (the owner) owns/runs several shops inside a center on Spring Street. Pretty much the majority are into home goods, and hers is no exception. An endless array of pots and pans, woks, rice cookers and brooms greet the passerby inside. Her stores feature much the same, along with the odds and ends that make it easy to spend a lot of time pouring over everything from business card holders to tweezers and pain patches. I'm not sure how she is able move about in a couple parts, as it is so freaking packed, and somewhat precariously too. I wouldn't recommend certain items though, I noticed lately that much of the cookware is aluminum, and for those of you who don't know, steel is preferable...not just for durability, but for health reasons. So if you plan to look for cookware, snap your finger against the sides and look underneath. The rice cookers tend to be Tiger, and while it's OK, I'd hold out for Cuckoo or Zojirushi. Truthfully I'd rather write a review for the center itself, all the shops are selling much the same items, with a few notable exceptions, but anyway I digress. Prices here are extremely inexpensive. I picked up a dozen thick plastic hangers for $2, and routinely by other items for not much more. Speak carefully here as a good majority of the ladies here speak almost no English whatsoever. Well, no real conversational English. However, you will find that they are helpful and will go out of their way to help you find what you want, and again, the prices are super inexpensive.

Chinatown Firecracker 5/10K Run/Walk & Bike Ride event has been held here for the last 48 years in celebration of Lunar New Year and in support of the L.A. local communities. I participated in this event for the past 3 years starting with the 2024 Year of the Dragon. I intend to participate in this event every year from here on out. It's such a fun and festive activity for all ages. Come join us! Most of the original business shops have closed. A few of them still remain. It's not as crowded as it was back in the days. Still nice to stroll through the walkways to reminisce the good times. Some of the buildings exterior appears to be original. The colorful Chinese gateway entrance is a bit dated. Hope they restore it soon. A visit to L.A. must include a visit to this iconic plaza. May you find great restaurants and good shops. Enjoy a peaceful morning with a hot cup of coffee or tea from Thank You Coffee, a delightful egg tart from Wonder Bakery, plus a light and crispy sugar butterfly aka danzan from Phoenix Bakery, while sitting at the bench and people watching. Unfortunately, there are many vacant store fronts, with still visible signs of historic restaurants, since long closed (e.g. Hop Louie). It looks like Golden Dragon Gifts shop is still operating, though closed when we came on a Sunday. There is an area filled with coin operated kiddie rides (cars, panda bears, etc)...will be back for that once appropriate.
