When I rented a car in Houston Texas- airport location- I thought, what's it matter what company I rent a car from? What's the difference between Hertz or Dollar besides the price? Here is the difference ---- price, customer service, dependability, and reliability. AND these are the reasons to NOT use the Dollar Rent a Car location in Houston. Why do I say that? First, when I arrived at the airport- after traveling all day - I was tired, hungry and just wanted to get the car and leave- I went to the check-in counter in the airport. No one there. The Hertz lady was there. Yes, she was checking in customers. Dollar Rent lady?- nope. The representative's purse was on the counter. Her People magazine was parted open- ready to be read --- but, no representative? So, after about twenty minutes - who helped us? Yes, the Hertz lady. "She stepped out to smoke," she said. "She should be back soon." Yes, I waited and waited. Finally, the Hertz lady - noticing that the Dollar girl was not coming back, told me to catch a shuttle to the rental location and I could check-in there. So, waited another fifteen minutes for a Dollar shuttle (by the way, there was always a steady stream of Hertz shuttles available). The ride to the rental location was smooth, comfortable, great air conditioning, and short ride. When at the rental location, the representatives were quick and swift in checking everyone in and getting me a vehicle. I got a economy car- so nothing exciting about that. It was a death trap car, but I didn't want to pay more for a better car. But, the real issue was during the return of the car. My flight was 5:30 a.m. I got to the rental drop off at 3:30 a.m. and the place was dark. The location was NOT open. The website said it was a 24/7 location. Why were they not open? I called the 1-800 number and only got a round and round voicemail not getting me anywhere and no information. Finally, another man pulled up to the gate and sat and waited. I assumed he was just as astounded as I, but he said the location didn't open until 4:00 a.m. So, I could breath a little easier. I still had time to get to the airport and go through security and find my gate before boarding - Right? Well, 4 a.m. came and went. So did 4:15 a.m. Finally, 4:18 a.m. I was made, grouchy, and freaking out about a flight that I might miss - but, to make it all worse- I got up so early, which is something that I hate to do. But, finally, someone showed up for work. Took time for them to open the office, open the gate, and I don't know - make breakfast or something. I, along with six other people, got checked in (they over charged me and charged me for hidden costs that were never disclosed before) and we were waiting outside for the shuttle to take us to the airport. What?? The shuttle driver had not shown up for work?? There wasn't going to be a shuttle bus to go to the airport? Is this a nightmare? That was the thought that was going through my head. My experience didn't get any better than that. I got to the airport and made my flight, but not without worry, rushing and unneeded stress. Thanks a lot Dollar Car Rental. We rented a car that immediately broke down, and when we contacted customer service, they directed us to the airport for a replacement. Dennis D. at the front desk was the most rude, disrespectful, and unprofessional individual I have encountered. They charged me for the extra protection which I declined and the guy who put it in the system noticed immediately it added it automatically so he changed it so he said, then I signed off and found out after returning vehicle I was charged for the extra protection I did not want. I rented a car from dollar at the Houston airport on 10/29/24 to be returned on 9/1/24 before 12am, I return it on 9/1/24 at 11:30 ish and was told to leave the key on the seat and my bill would be emailed to me. Which I did what I was told to do. The next day I received an email stating I rerun it on 9/2/24 and was up-charge an extra $51, no custom service number to call just an email to reach out to and when I did they refuse to review the camera and correct their error because there is a camera at the return gate showing when the car came on there lot. They are thieves and very shady but I learn a lesson never walk a way without a receipt matter what they say. You can't trust no one these days shady business practice. read more

Don't use this company!!! We send them an email about the shuttle from and to the rental service. They answered us there wasn't and that we had to take a taxi or an Uber. It costed us 60 dollar. Afterwards we learned there as a shuttle for everyone from and to the rental service area. We had to wait over an hour until it was our turn at the reception desk. After traveling for over 48 hours, that's quite a wait. There were 3 ladies et the desk, two of them were talking and giggling, the third one was talking at the phone. The queue got longer and longer all the way to the hall, but they didn't care. After more than an hour waiting, it was finally our turn, the woman at the counter kept tapping and tapping, and the bill kept getting bigger. We'd already paid for everything at home, but they added fuel, all sorts of dubious taxes, service charges/taxes, concession fee recovery, and a premium RD SVC we hadn't asked for. Their printer was supposedly broken, they couldn't print out the contract, we only received it when we were already back home. In the end, we paid $408 on top of the bill we'd already paid at home. One positive thing, it was a good car Dollar lives up to its name, never again!!! read more

Then when I returned the car, they said it had some damage on the back fender. I hadn't noticed it, and when they pointed it out, it looked to me like something that could be buffed out. The vehicle I requested was no longer availabl, so they put me in a car and said they'd refund the initial amount and then I paid for the car that day. So I've been charged twice. HOBBY AIRPORT. Reserved a car for noon. Caught the shuttle to pick up the car. The lobby was full!! I go up to the counter and was informed that the car wasnt ready and I was number 8 in line for a car. I asked one of the customers who was sitting in the lobby how long the wait? She said she had been there for an hour. I waited an hour, called Lyft and went to Enterprise, they got me into a car with AWESOME customer service. If there were a 0 star review, this place would get it. Shuttle bus dropped 8 of us off and we just stood in the lobby, like pigs in a pen. No one manning any of the 6 desks. I walked behind the desk through some door that said employees only and ran into 2 people who I asked if they could help. They asked me for an ID and said I couldn't be back there, but did nothing to help out the 8 people in line. Slow service...I'm a Dollar Express member and still had to wait without knowing when I'd be able to leave with a rental car. When I arrived and got off the airport shuttle from the terminal they didn't have any full size cars ready which is what I booked. Really? Didn't I book it for 2:30 pm? I arrived at 3 and there was nothing there for me and they tried to get me to take a midsize instead...no thanks, that's not what I paid for; why not upgrade me for the trouble? Because I saw plenty of midsize SUVs that were just sitting in the lot while a bunch of customers were just waiting around outside the building. Eventually after 15-20 min, a Ford Escape emerged from the car wash still dripping wet because they didn't bother to wipe it down. They ended up giving me the Escape and I peaced out of there. The lot/building is super run down and old looking. If it wasn't for the low rate and nice vehicle once I finally got one, I wouldn't be sure if I'd come back to this location. Definitely don't be in a hurry if you rent here and be sure to keep your gas receipt because they ask for it when returning the vehicle! read more

Three stars because it was a good rate and the employees not upselling me were friendly. But I felt like I was in a documentary video about upsells and consumer protection as I rented from this location. I did my research to figure out my rate and insurance so it was a pretty good deal to get a decent car (new Malibu) for $40 per day including taxes and fees. But when I got to the counter they insisted on taking 15 minutes to walk me through upsell options for insurance (FOUR TIMES), navigation, tolls, and gas. (Plus re-enter my address and credit card info which they ALREADY should have from the booking.) The options would have doubled or tripled the price of the rental - and were offered to the customers in front of me too, drastically increasing the amount of time needed to serve customers. This is pretty obnoxious considering that with modern online booking systems, all of these options could have and should have been offered to me at the time of my reservation. Anyway, I took photos of the car as I checked it out to reduce odds of harassment post rental, which based on the other reviews seems to have been a good idea... here's hoping. read more

Rent from anyone but Dollar! Why? 1. They have no selection of cars available at this location. We rented on an off day of the week. You would expect there to be more than two cars in our size category to choose from. Both were NOT what they promoted as a choice on the website. 2. Do not book online with the "lock you car in at this online super discount rate". That's a base deposit. NOT the actual rental price. I did that thinking I was getting an amazing deal on a week of rental for $240. Then I got to the rental desk and realized that was just to hold the car. There were so many additional fees I could have rented a really nice car from my usual Enterprise for less. (In fact a few weeks later I did just that. I rented an Audi SUV for HALF of what the crappy little Hyundai cost me here.) My good online deal cost me double what I was quoted as my rental fee online when I picked up the car. 3. They offer a toll tag like many other car rental places do these days. It is good for most any toll road in the country, so you can zip through like your usual E Z Tag. Then you pay the toll amount to them once you return the car. Only instead of charging the toll fees and a base one time or daily small fee like the others do, they charge you the toll fee AND an additional $15 PER TOLL PASS! Yes. I said $15 per use. My $14 tolls ended up costing me over $100!!!!!! There was no negotiating with them. In fact they didn't even send me a bill..they sent me a letter from a collection agency. It went straight to a collection agency! I will never rent from Dollar again. They are a total rip off of fees and poor customer service. read more

Do I have to leave a star? This was the absolute worst service of my life. I verbally declined the premium roadside coverage as well as any additional service. However I had been waiting in line for 1.5 hours at this point, and did not notice that despite my verbally declining the coverage, the clerk had still added it. The day we picked up the car there were roughly 40 people in line with two employees working. It was hot, and every person in line was irritated. We just wanted to get out of there. When we went to the garage to pick up the vehicle there was no one from Dollar anywhere to be seen. Someone from another company told us to take a Subaru Outback. We loaded up, but it wouldn't start. Had to go hunt down said employee again. Took a different car, which reeked of pot! I should note that there were two cars left on the lot when we drove away, despite at least 25 people in line behind us. A few hours after we returned the car I got the invoice and saw that the we had been charged about $180 for upgrades that we declined. He told us $52 My husband said yes and when it came time to pay the e deposit and what not my bill was $342! Mind you I prepaid for the car already! When ai asked about the pricing he said $52 a day (1 day rental) - I said no take it off and my card still has a charge for $342!!! NO refund yet!!! Because of Houston HOU I will never use dollar ever again. I was charged violation fines a month later for driving on the freeway and not paying the tolls... I paid 9.99 a day to have unlimited toll access on my rental (which I thought was 9.99 total until I saw my bill)... Anyway I got a credit card charge for the highway violations and the rep said that it was because it wasn't in my package. I am going to look for a copy of my receipt from last month but I don't think I kept it... I remember seeing it as a fee because I was surprised I was charged 9.99 per day... They refunde me the difference of the fines - the charges they neglected to officially charge me and assured me I didn't have it on my package and they were doing me a big favor... If I could give negative stars I would. Soooo many hidden charges, like a surprise $350 hold on a credit card. Actual credit card, NOT debit. It was a two day trip and the hold was lifted upon return of the car but this ratchet agency did not stop there. The rental car had a toll tag on it. With other companies, the toll is properly charged later but with this company?! Nope, a $15 per toll admin fee is tacked on (but they limit it to 7 admin fees, how big of them). None of this was explained at check in. Naturally, there is no way to dispute the admin fees, you just get referred to the toll agency but you can't get any additional information from Dollar as to how to pay the toll directly to the toll agency. Lesson learned. Admin fee of $60 for $7 in tolls. NEVER AGAIN! Don't be cheap or "thrifty" -use anyone else BUT this company for your rental card needs. read more

I rented a Dollar Car vehicle through a third party, Expedia, from 11/28/22 - 12/8/22. Upon arriving, the Dollar Car Rental associate offered multiple (upsale) options, which I declined except the toll option for $50. He stated he needed a credit card for incidentals. He gave me a document which stated $306.75 would be charged for incidentals. I found that number odd, and placed the document in the glove compartment. I got the virus and sparingly used the vehicle and returned it a day early. The same day I was billed the amount of $306.75. I refuted the charge with USAA, and found the $306.75 charge back on my credit card statement today 1/10/23. I first called Dollar, and spoke to an off-shore Dollar billing associate. I asked him how much Expedia charged me for the rental car, and he stated, "he did not know." Next, I asked him why I was charged $306.75, and he stated for toll pass, insurance and fuel charges. I stated, the vehicle was returned with a full tank of fuel, toll pass was never activated and USAA was my insurance carrier. He did not dispute the charges, BUT he was going to charge me taxes for the vehicle rental transaction; that Expedia did not charge. I have yet to see a legitimate business not charge taxes for any taxable product. ODD. How did he know that if he did not know how much Expedia charged me for the rental when I asked him? Understaffed. I stood in line for over an hour for them to tell me that I could not rent the car that I reserved online because I was not scheduled to fly out of town on the return date. I cancelled my reservation by phone with a customer service representative who told me that my money would be refunded in a few days. They kept a hundred dollars.
