Hotel Praia - View from room 503

Hotel Praia was a great stay for my wife and me while visiting Nazaré for three nights in early…read moreOctober. The hotel is in a great location, has convenient on site parking, puts out a great breakfast in the morning and has large, clean and quiet rooms. All this wrapped up for a very reasonable rate. Hotel Praia is centrally located across the street from the town's indoor farmers' market. The beach is two blocks away below the hotel. Along the way is a super market to stock your room and pick up any beach supplies and a great gelato store on the corner. The cross street above the hotel offers a pharmacy, hardware store, several clothing shops and the police station. To reach the hotel via car from the main highways, follow the signs to Nazaré then just drive into the town on the upper road that parallels the beach and make a right turn down the hill. When you see several taxis waiting, the hotel will be on the right side with the garage entrance just past the lobby entrance. The parking garage is super convenient and included in the nightly rate. It is the tightest garage though that I have ever navigated. Even in my small BMW 1 series sedan, I could not make any of the turns to the single lane ramps in one shot. Just be careful and you can escape without damage. Luckily we never encountered someone going in while we were headed out or vice versa. Breakfast is offered starting at 8am in a large room off the lobby. There are lots of tables to choose from. Each of the mornings, the offering was the same scrambled eggs, bacon, numerous cold cuts, cheese, breads with a toaster, fresh fruit, cereals, several juices and a complicated coffee machine. It took my wife three days to master that thing. Our room on the top floor was large and offered a side view of the ocean and beach from the balcony. The bed was comfy and the room blissfully quiet. We never heard anything outside our room or next door despite the hotel hosting a tour group on our first night. The bathroom was nice with plenty of hot water for the shower and even a stand-alone bidet. The room has plenty of storage, but only four hangers, a room safe and mini bar frig. My only gripe was the 24" wall mounted TV that was barely viewable from across the large room. We found everything to like about this hotel and all for a super reasonable rate. Do check them out if you are planning a visit.

This is one of 4 places I stayed while visiting Portugal, with 2 being AirBnB and the last the Intercontinental in Estoril. This property is a vacation destination. If you think about places where to intelligently (not the ritz) stay when money is no object. This is your place. Spend some time reading their site, but combine ultra luxury, with creative modern design, and a very cool hippie vibe of conservation and fresh food. My pictures on here tell a good story by themselves. At this point you must be thinking why only 4 stars. I really wanted to from the spectacular idea and property, but cannot give 5 as i felt the least welcomed here than anywhere else in Portugal I stayed. It may be since I stayed here on a work trip and didn't fit in the vibe of complete relaxation when rushing off to Monte Real to attend to the F-16s beckoning call at 1am. My girlfriend who was on the trip with me enjoying the luxuries while i was away daily at work, needed a bit of assistance navigating between the Intercontinental before and AirBnB after and was given a strong response of "Do not come to the property any earlier or stay later than booking hours detail". Not just the room, I can understand that, but the entire property. This caused a great deal of grief logistically while I should have been focusing on work. Instead of moving between properties together in the morning or afternoon, we had to arrange car services to transport her mid-day, on her first time outside of the USA, to remote locations of Portugal, ALONE. Imagine the fear of not knowing the language, currency, behaviors, etc and being required to go alone. When I was able to come back for the day, I found her in the last property, sleeping on the couch with a knife in her hand... I am sure if i fell into the conformist view they were looking for and was solely on vacation, this would be a 5 star review, and i would also rate the staff as a 5, but in reality I think of the property and concept as a 5, and staff as a 2.

We were a part of a yoga retreat, and were charged 30 euros per person to eat breakfast 1 hour later since the rest of our group was on a tour that we chose not to attend. And guess what? We ate the identical meal that we would have gotten had we gone to breakfast with the group at 7am. The entire time we were treated with disdain and resentment despite paying a sufficient amount of money for the villas. It's a beautiful location and a beautiful property but it certainly left a negative mark on my opinion of Portugal.

Located just a brief 10 min walk from the adorable Marina, it is centrally located with a gorgeous view of the water. There is always someone to open the door for you on your arrival and you're greeted with a gorgeous spacious entrance into the hotel. Service is great -- especially the cleaners for the room. They would visit my room twice a day to endure I had water, that my slippers with ready for me beside my bed, a little chocolate each night before bed... their attention to detail made me think they should train other teams in the world. The grounds are beautiful complete with a pool with a gorgeous water view, a highly rated fancy restaurant that won't break the bank, a good breakfast buffet, a state of the art gym, a spa, and very spacious rooms and bathrooms. This hotel was great for a work conference and they handled hundreds of people with ease. This is a great example of how a top tier hotel should be ran. Outstanding!

Not long after we checked in, we received little desserts waiting for us in our room. The bedding, the bathroom, the balcony views were absolutely spectacular. We truly loved the complimentary indoor spa, it was very relaxing. The restaurants also serve some amazing food and cocktails. For an extra charge, the hotel was able to provide us transportation from the airport; they even arranged private transportation to drop us off at our airbnb when we had to check out the next day. The transportation service was great and very informative, we wound up using them to take us to the Sintra one day during our trip. We unfortunately only stayed one night and I wish we stayed longer, my husband constantly talk about coming back here. Cascais is an absolute gem of a town and I highly suggest spending a night here if you are ever in the area.

The windows opened out to the main street but with the double pane windows we could hear a little bit of the street sounds but it wasn't loud enough to keep us up at night. The beds were decently comfortable and the room was spacious. Basic toiletries were provided but there were no slippers or tissue. The shower and toilet pressure were decent. My one biggest complaint was that there was no counter space in the bathroom at all. Also, there were no extra outlets to plug in chargers, so we had to unplug the bedside lamps. Service What sets this hotel apart is the outstanding service. I would've given this hotel four stars max, but I'm giving an entire star just for the hotel staff. In particular, Andres and Elena were amazing. On our last day after we checked out, we asked Elena about Ginja liquor in chocolate cups. She told us to go on with our planned tour and she would find out for us. When we got back, we found out she had walked to the shop herself and I got us a sample to try and also a list of the prices for different sizes of the alcohol. We loved it and she actually walked us back to the shop to make the purchase. I am so glad she pointed us in the right direction because the ones we had tried at other shops were not nearly as good. I was really impressed by how far she went out of her way to help us, especially considering we had already checked out of the hotel. Location This hotel is in the perfect location. It is within a few minutes walking distance of the historical center and is across the street from the bus stop for the 434 and 435 buses to all of the main sites. There are small shops and restaurants nearby and the tourism center is just down the street. Right next-door is a small travel agency. The Quinta da Regaleira is about a 12 minute walk from the hotel. If you need a tuk tuk or taxi, staff at the hotel are more than happy to call one for you. Restaurant After reading the reviews we decided to try the hotel restaurant on our first night. We got the shrimp appetizer, apple and walnut salad, and shrimp and scallop risotto. The food was unbelievably delicious and the seafood was cooked perfectly. We liked the food so much that we came back on our third night. The food was still good but unfortunately not as good as the first night. It was a different cook in the kitchen that night. Breakfast was good but there were two issues. The first was that it was exactly the same and by the third day we were bored of the same food. This wouldn't be an issue if there was a greater variety. However, with only eggs, sausage and mushrooms to choose from, you're left eating the same food every day. The other problem was they kept running out of food. Breakfast is supposed to go until 10:30 but they would be out of some items by 9:45 or 10 o'clock.

For example, the fitness room had a water dispenser but it was empty, and there were no lights in the room so I could not workout after 5pm. Also, we had a full kitchen, but there were no plates or silverware. These seem like all easy fixes that should be included in such a high end hotel. My main problem was the way in which a serious bike accident was handled by the front desk team. My family and I stayed for one night and rented bikes from the hotel the next morning. As I was climbing a gravel road, the tire spun out and I landed on my feet, but my front leg hit a wire protruding from the front tire. This wire should have been covered by a plastic cap. The wire hit my shin and tore my leg up which resulted in an emergency room visit and 6 stiches. My children rode 3 bikes back to the hotel while my husband drove me to the ER. The 4th bike was hidden away from the street and the hotel was notified of the exact location of the bike and the accident that was the result of their neglegance. Later that day, the hotel receptionist, Inês Pinheiro, indicated that the bike was not located. I requested that they look again, sending exact GPS coordinates from the picture taken and requested a video call on WhatsApp so we could provide assistance locating the bike. Instead, the next day, they said the bike was still not found and I needed to call with a credit card to pay for the bike. Two days later, I had my Portuguese friend call only to find out that the bike manufacturer found the bike using GPS, but the hotel never notified me. We did everything to help the hotel locate the bike, while the hotel staff took zero responsibility for their neglegance. The staff seemed young and inexperienced. I hope the hotel management will find this feedback useful and address training issues with their staff.
