(Dear Yelp: Please do not, again, combine this with Berczy Park ... I am specifically reviewing the FOUNTAIN, not the park!)
Sometimes, something is built that just captures peoples' imaginations. This is the case with the Dog Fountain, opened in the summer of 2017 (see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLBa3tW2OYA), The Fountain is acreation of Québécois landscape architect Claude Cormier and can be found in the center of the new triangular plaza at Berczy Park. It quickly became the talk of the town and the place everybody wanted to walk their dog.
What makes it the "Dog Fountain"? Well, it starts with a golden bone perched at the very top. Surrounding the perimeter, 27 realistically sculptured and painted dogs of various breeds on all three tiers (and some even outside the fountain) with mouths all shooting water to the center. And, at the bottom, a wide-eyed cat wishing it was somewhere else.
Located in the heart of the city with the skyline backdrop on one side and the flatiron, mural-covered Gooderham Building on the other, the fountain is beautifully placed.
It's quite a sight to see ... the dogs seem to love it. The city estimates 2,000 dogs a day, and with the multitudes of dogs I saw during my visit, I'd say that's about right.
What I great place amongst great surroundings.
