My husband & I have the citywide pass, so slowly but surely we're trying out all the locations. I really wanted to make this branch my weekend go-to. The location is great - Trader Joe's on the corner, convenient to the subway, etc., but there are some major issues with this Y that make it unlikely that I'll visit it regularly.
As others have said, there are a ton of little kids at branch. I have absolutely nothing against kids. I DO have something against oblivious parents who vacantly stare off into the middle distance while their diaper bag repeatedly bangs into the back swing of an elliptical machine some man is stoically trying to use as this happens. And a mom letting her barely more than a toddler run from one resistance machine to the next in the circuit, climbing on them like big toys when there are people waiting to use them. And a dad who brought his 2 year old daughter in the Men's locker room & shower when there are designated Family locker rooms!? (My husband witnessed this while trying to shower. Also noted by him -- there are no shower curtains on the stalls in the Men's.)
And speaking of lockers rooms, I was surprised to find, after walking through the workout spaces, that the locker rooms are way below par. The quarters are tight. There was a woman sitting on a stool next to what was ultimately the locker I used, fully dressed, reading a book. For more than an hour. WHY, when there are lounging areas within the gym w/a lot few naked people?? I say the locker I "ultimately" used because the first one I loaded all my stuff into had a cut latch where I would have secured my lock, so I had to unload everything & find another space, which I found after opening TWO other lockers full of stuff, no lock attached. Crazily enough, when I met up w/ my husband outside the locker rooms, he reported having the SAME problem w/ the first locker he tried.
Now for the workout -- I used a treadmill for 50 min. while looking over treetops blowing in the sunny breeze on Atlantic, & it was great, if a little hot with those giant windows facing south. Better ventilation would make a massive improvement. There are a bunch of water fountains at this Y, most equipped with the water bottle filling nozzle, which is great. Also no shortage of antibac wipe dispensers, also great. I also really love the flow of the weight & resistance machines that I used, & the nice long, narrow halls for the treadmills, ellipticals, etc. facing Atlantic. I had a great workout & really worked up a sweat, so naturally...I needed to use the shower (*foreboding music here).
I must've hit the showers at the same time that kiddie swim hour got out or something, because most stalls were occupied w/ at least two kids. There were shower caps, kid no-tangle shampoo, & tiny swimsuits, goggles &flip flops occupying all the hooks & stools, w/ the exception of two empty stalls. I hopped in one, but there was no available hook for my towel, so I went to the empty stall across the way & hung my towel so a corner of it stuck inside my stall. (I always do this - it's OCD but I feel like I need to keep an eye on it). I got about halfway through my shower when I heard "is this my towel?" from a tiny voice & turned around just in time to see the corner of my towel disappear from my stall. I stuck my head out to see a little girl vigorously drying w/ it, other towels laying sopping on the floor at her feet. My eyes met the eyes of a woman standing at the entrance of the shower, she sing-songed for her kids to hurry along, & away scampered the girl & my towel. They left the wet, discarded towels on the floor for someone else to deal with, by the way.
It was about this time that the non-draining drain at my feet made a burping sound & regurgitated dense brown water (the whole time I was showering, I'd straddled the puddle & methodically turned my shower off in hopes of keeping the flooding at bay, but the puddles from the kids' showers on either side overflowed into my stall's sloped flooring). Disgusted, w/ feet and ankles splashed w/ whateverthatbrownstuffwas, I ran back to the stall across the way. Now, w/ the insolent mother & her towel-stealing gang gone, the showers were basically empty. I turned on that shower and behold - the drain worked.
I emerged from the showers pissed off & dripping. I got some looks for tracking water in to the locker room. Luckily I had my own towel from home in my locker, I'd just stupidly thought I could use the gym amenities I pay for. Once dry & dressed, I squeezed out of the narrow cul-de-sac of lockers and dried my hair at a tiny counter big enough for two people to get ready, next to the toilets.
2 more things: turns out my husband also had a towel thief when he showered! And this Y only offers the large-size towels - not great for workout use. After reporting all this, I'm surprised I didn't give it 1 star, but the machines & location really are a hook. I'll try going again on off-hours. read more
