As we checked I was told I had a back in site. I told her I paid for pull through. That got fixed. But as I pulled into my site, there was somebody in the site she originally gave us. The full concrete pad is spacious and level. There's a few trees smattered about but not for shade. Park is clean and all roads are paved. The store is non existent. No groceries at all. A couple of emergency things for camper and o few novelty gift stuff. Park is open to the world and no codes for bathrooms. People can literally walk through from open parks that surround the campground. Not sure if fire is allowed but no wood sales and our fire ring had grass growing in it. Was told it was good internet but it takes longer to download than if I go off of data on my phone. Showers look like they haven't been scrubbed in a while. After being here a couple days, I had to drop the stars by one. Only thing that makes it worthy of 2 stars is the nice wide pads and patios. There are no workers here besides the counter person. These are the worst showers I've ever seen in a KOA. No temperature controls and you push the button to get water which you have to keep pushing every 2.6 seconds. Showers have so much buildup, my wife didn't know where to hang the towel. Needless to say, we didn't use them. The toilet won't flush properly and a big mess inside one of them JUST after the scheduled cleaning (. Sorry for the picture) At our time of visit(April 10-15) there are 15 permanent campers taking prime spots. It's ok passing through for a night and that's it. Oh, one more thing. Every time we go to do laundry, a resident takes up all the washers and dryers.

They seem to forget that "First impressions are everything." The front sites appear to be mostly seasonal, long term. The pull through sites in the back had adequate space but little shade. No fire pits or grills. They just have a large trailer for trash which was open for viewing and overflowing. This isn't a quiet spot. Even in the back pull through sites the highway noise is noticeable, especially the regular truck Jake brakes. At 4:15am a train came by blowing its horn. So much for sleeping in. The bathhouse was very clean but taking a shower, I never got more than lukewarm water. They have nice laundry facilities with plenty of machines ($3.50 wash/$1.00+ to dry). The pool looks clean but the deck area and chairs are old. Honestly the office area and building looks like it was probably nice and fun in its heyday but now isn't inviting at all. The playground is also a bit rundown. Lots of potential but doesn't seem to be the kind of place the owners reinvest much back into it. Just a fresh coat of paint and stain would go a long way everywhere. I have no idea what other RV options are available in Dodge City so not sure if this is "the nice place" or not, but if I come back through I'll have to check. Even though I paid for two nights I left after day one.

Even on the Oklahoma side there are some historical markers. The Santa Fe Trail is not far from here. The park is a marvelous oasis with a small man-made lake and surrounded with huge cottonwood trees. There are lots of juniper. This pears as a large slash of green against the rolling grassy plains. There are campsites pretty much all around the lake. The campsite I stayed at the first night, Cottonwood, was pleasant enough but very "public" in in full view of a very busy camp road. It was terribly crowded Sunday and there was back and forth traffic pretty much until 11 PM. I only saw law enforcement once. They stopped at a site near mine (Cottonwood #1) and spent a long time talking to some people in a small and very old trailer. It looked like they were living there semi-permanently with a huge woodpile, BBQ, etc. The truck belonging to the site was on its last legs. They (a couple?) seemed to be slowly patrolling by my camper van again and again, looking closely. Since I was the only other van in the campground I started locking my travel-all. I don't usually do that. There were enough large family groups in run down trailers and trucks, that I thought some casual theft wasn't out of the question. I couldn't figure out where all of the muscle cars with their loud music were coming from. Meade is the next nearest town and it's a good 10 miles north. Well, this is the place to cruise on a pretty day, it seems. There were just lots of cars and trucks, cruising around. On Monday it was much quieter. You can really see what an oasis this is. I moved to Cedar #2. I had no trouble, as the park is only 10% occupied now. A pair of flickers is cavorting above my head in the trees. Site #2 has great shade. All I have to do is turn around and see the lake. There are lots of playgrounds and cool, green places for people to walk to. It's a fishing lake, so no powerboats. It's quiet because of that. The bathroom and shower house that serves the whole park apparently is rudimentary at best. There are two shower stalls for women with no curtains. It is all open air. Just like girl scout camp you can see trees and sky when you shower. The water is warm and you can choose only one temp. There is no door into the shower house/bathroom itself. You just jog to the right of a brick wall and there you are. ZERO privacy.
