If you are looking for a camera, but the choice are overwhelming, you should go to Dodd's Camera. They know what they are doing. They have a guy in the back who knows everything. He will help you if something doesn't work. The helpful sales staff know a lot about their product. B&H claims to be a great camera store, but they are not local. You cannot come and ask a questions like a Dodd's Camera. I told my 3 kids to get me a Dodd's camera gift card for my birthday. Only 1 came through. I guess my boys sub it to their wives.' What I wanted was on sale from Christmas's to MLK day. My birthday celebration wasn't until January 26, so I got a $50 higher price. This is the same price on B&H. read more

Initially, when I went, the individual who is lost knowledgeable about older cameras wasn't there because it was the weekend. However, the people there tried to help me and recommended a time for me to return when the expert was there. I returned on a weekday and the gentleman was able to research and look up the information about the cameras in question. Because I wasn't looking to sell the cameras, he did not check more specific stuff but if I'd asked, they probably would have found a way to help. I have been going to this location for years. The staff has always been amazing (though today I saw mostly new to me faces) and it was a great local resource. But things seem to have changed. I was in today to inquire about a new lens, and see what they would give me for an old lens. As usual, the staff here is stellar. Whatever I need they are quick to help. Today the guy that helped me pretty great. But all in all, the staff seemed nervous. It was probably due to someone I assume was the manager. He was stomping back and forth and snapping at everyone. When he was asked how much they would buy my lens for, he barked out a number, then looked at me and said, "good customers get good prices, bad customers get bad prices." And he stomped off. Now, they price they gave me seemed good. In fact, it was $200 more than I expected. But I thought to myself "Are they giving me a good price because they like me, or a bad price because they don't?" I had no way of knowing, but I could not trust them after they admit they short people they don't like. I explained that I would not be dealing with them and left. The sales guy tried hard to change my mind ("He was saying he liked you!" he shouted out after me.) But it didn't matter. I'd rather sell, and buy, somewhere where prices did not change based on affection. read more

It's funny how far apart the powerhouse photographic stores are in Ohio. Dodd puts their best in Ohio in Cleveland and the Kenwood area of Cincinnati. Add to that Cord Camera, and Kenwood has two good stores, although Cord Camera doesn't have medium format. What's this medium format? It's a bigger format that used to be defined by film in 6 by 7 cm, 6 by 6 cm, and 6 by 4.5 cm. That beat 135 format, which is just 36x24mm. (1 cm = 10 mm, if you don't recall.) Professional fashion photography was almost always done with medium format. Maybe obviously, the equipment was not really meant to be hand held, so it wasn't good for many occasions. While the latest (hand held, 135 format) digital sensors can reach resolutions held by smaller medium format digital sensors, those people claim bigger is better, so it's good that Dodd Camera has something bigger available. I went today asking for something smaller, micro Four-Thirds lenses. No one sneered. No one told me that I didn't want those. I took my equipment into the store and they were gracious enough to let me try the higher end lens that they had in stock. It's a shame that they didn't have other such lenses, but I suspect that most people will order online, and not bother local stores. That's a shame because these people were interested. (I've gone through my share of brand snobs, so it was good not to be judged today.) Unlike the stores in Dayton, this store seemed to have a good share of equipment, including tripods, lighting, bags, and more. I was thrilled to find that the store was staffed by reasonable people who cared about cameras--not just what they had, but almost any equipment we discussed. read more

We went there for quick passport size photographs with very specific dimensions and they were among the very few in the town to do it. It's a great place - very friendly folks and very professional. For camera geeks, it's a heaven as you get a wide variety of cameras and cool accessories. In addition, they have a big studio for clicking cool photos. Sold a new photographer a used body without disclosing how high the shutter account actually was. Then 3 months later (estimated) refused to buy the same body back to make a sale on a different lens set up. Terrible experience especially having been a consistent customer, and they had told me more that 2 times they would buy it. After looking at it. They proceeded to talk about the fact they only bought it from the previous owner as a favor (there for selling, a new photographer a body they knew they wouldn't even purchase back, but telling that same photographer they would. I will not be purchasing again from them, and understand why people don't find them to be a good company. Instead of selling my equipment online, I was looking for a local camera shop that would accept my camera gear. I saw Dodd and called for questions. The gentleman on the phone was really friendly and patient with all my questions. I brought my canon lens and body in and it was a smooth transaction. They do not give cash up front. The headquarter will mail you a check and you will receive it within 7-10 business days. I got it less than 7 days. Customer service was excellent! This will be my go to place if I ever need to purchase any accessories, cameras, film and also prints. They sell new and used cameras. I love Dodd Camera. Their customer service is awesome. They're always super friendly and helpful. And they're pretty knowledgeable about what they offer. Some of their pricing on gear and equipment can be slightly higher, while other things are pretty comparable to other larger camera supply stores. What I really like is that I can rent gear to try first without having to shell out thousands of dollars for something that I may not like. Much like an online lens rental place but here you can rent light kits, stands, batteries and more. Overall, a great store. read more

Once again, I was in their store for at least 15 minutes looking at various merchandise and wasn't acknowledged at all. Dodd is the best thing about Cincinnati photography. You can push and pull black and white, and the staff is extremely intelligent and helpful. They send the film to their lab out of town so it takes a good 4-7 days to process but worth the wait for quality. Andy is also the man at printing and high res scanning if you need it. So - first off, the people in the store are incredibly friendly and helpful. I've got zero complaints with them. If I were needing to purchase a camera or accessory, I wouldn't have any concerns with seeking them out for advice or a recommendation and good camera stores can be hard to come by. Unfortunately, their repair service leaves a ton to be desired... and that's putting it lightly. The local store did everything right - they took the repair order, explained the process, and made us feel like we were in good hands. But it went downhill from there. The repair need was on an Olympus lens to fix the mount; this should have been a relatively simple repair. We were supposed to get a quote in a week, but it took 3 weeks to get it... and that's only after numerous phone calls to the service line. After week 4 with no ETA in sight, we asked them to return the lens and give us a refund (less the non-refundable $40 exam fee). It took a week to get back to us. Then, I did what I should have done all along - called Olympus. They have set pricing depending on what's being requested: cleaning, simple repair, and major repair. This fell under the simple repair category and the cost was less than $150. This is about a third of what Dodd was quoting. On top of that, I'm getting the lens back in about a week after I mailed it. So my reco: Dodd is undoubtedly great for local purchase advice for cameras, lenses, and accessories. But don't start with Dodd if you need a repair - check with your manufacturer first and only go to Dodd as a last resort. read more

I been on the fence about what camera is going to fit my needs, I live out in the country and the closes camera store to me is about a hour away. I made several calls and visits to a number of stores and Corey Davis was been wonderful and the most helpful to me. He always is willing to take the time to answer any questions and advice me in what i am trying to achieve. Nice store. The workers are fairly knowledgable across the broad range of camera gear and techniques. I do find their prices a little steep but recognize that they have to keep the lights on somehow and I believe they do price match but don't quote me on that. Besides cameras and camera gear, they also have printing capabilities among other things. Using high quality printers/ink/paper, your images will look their best and last for many decades. Don't forget to check out their used camera lens and body section for possible deals. They offer rental lenses and camera bodies at reasonable rates for those times when you need a specialty lens or finances do not allow for a outright purchase. Their selection of camera bags and tripods is decent, not many brands but a good selection overall. Even though most photographers and general consumers are hitting Amazon, BestBuy, etc for their camera needs, you cannot beat the convenience of actually holding the particular product in your hands and supporting a local business. read more

I went into the store on a Wednesday night at 6 pm. There were 4 other customers in the store. I waited at the counter patiently while I listened to the 2 workers chatting with customers that obviously we're not purchasing but just wanted to chat. While I understand this I would expect you would acknowledge your other customers. I happened to be there with $2600 in cash to buy a Nikon lens. After waiting and listening for 20 minutes or so. I finally walked out. It is no wonder camera stores go out of business. Adorama here I come! My wife stopped by when she needed some help figuring out how to shoot wide angle shots of one of our rooms we had for rent. They were extremely helpful first trying to get her camera to work. They sold her some equipment which ended up not working as well as she had hoped. They took back the camera and then offered that they had a lens they could rent her that would fit her camera. It was an expensive and scary lens, but the rental fee was reasonable. You just have to put down the amount for the lens in case something happens. It was a bit nerve racking, but it ended up working out great. They were very helpful. read more

Additionally they have a level of transparency and honesty that is admirable and not found very many other places. If they can't match the prices of Amazon? They'll tell you. Without even questioning me they refunded me my security deposit and told me that I should order from BH, and that they totally got it. I've been in the market for a really great camera for the last 2 years and kept getting stuck on what to buy - DSLR or Micro 4/3... so in the end I didn't purchase anything. On the suggestion of a friend I went to Dodd and with the help of Hal and Gabe I finally took the plunge and am super excited with my choice. Without the 3+ hours of talk and hands on use spent across 2 visits I wouldn't have felt comfortable spending the amount of money I plunked down.... They encouraged me to rent one of the cameras for 24 hrs (actually gave me almost 2 days time) to get more familiar with one of my choices so I would, in the end, know the better choice for me and my needs. Thank you Dodd Camera and specifically Hal and Gabe for all your time and expertise. It is rare thing these days to have a full camera store still around, let alone people so nice and willing to share what they know in such a helpful and supportive way. And just to add something (b/c of one of the other reviews) Hal is a DSLR guy, as soon as we landed on Micro 4/3 being probably a better route for my needs he turned me over to Gabe... so it certainly is not that Hal isn't helpful, its just that his in-depth expertise lies elsewhere. I had the mission to find a camera that didn't exactly break the bank and had good quality which led to this shop in particular with a camera guru named Hal . Well, we did as we were recommended but Hal sent me to Dallas after giving the impression he didn't want to deal with people who weren't exactly knowledgeable but Dallas did . Dallas gave options, shared some pros and cons while allowing a "test drive" with the few and gave undivided attention to answer questions . I gave 4 stars cause of the impressions Hal gave but overall it was a solid place worth your time to search for cameras and materials. read more
