THE AFTER BILL IN THE MAIL

Well, since no one will answer the phone at their billing department, here I am. My boyfriend and I won a very very inexpensive trip to a hotel in Kaanapali, Maui. Unfortunately, on our last night there, my boyfriend came down with a 102 degree fever, and our flight was the next morning out of Maui back to Los Angeles. Thankfully, or so I thought, I found an urgent care that was conveniently located across the street from our hotel in a shopping center, who I called immediately and asked if my boyfriend's insurance PPO policy was in network with them. The girl immediately said yes, and I said great and sent him over there as I packed all our belongings in a hurry into our rental car to somehow try to do everything on my own with a very sick boyfriend who couldn't function whatsoever and not miss our flight. I was extremely grateful that the urgent care was able to take him so quickly, was in network with his insurance, and prescribed him medications on the spot next-door at the supermarket pharmacy. This day for me was absolute hell, not to mention my boyfriend who was severely ill. He paid his co-pay at the time and we thought at the most we may get a small bill later on. The bill I've repeatedly received in the mail for him is in the amount of $605.26. If you caught the earlier part of my review, you'd notice I mentioned that we WON a very inexpensive trip to Maui. My boyfriend and I can't afford a lot, let alone a $600 urgent care bill. With that said, it has been around five months or so since our trip. We have received this bill numerous times in the mail. We have called the phone number on the bill more times than I care to count and left more voicemails than I can remember at this point. We have not received a single call back. No one will respond to us and so now I've decided to succumb to our last resort, a yelp review. Maybe they'll notice this, but doubtful. Since you keep choosing to mail us the same bill over and over again and refuse to get on the phone with us, you'll be receiving a check in the mail for $1 because that's what we can afford at this time and because your staff are ill informed when asked if someone's policy is in network. I work in healthcare, I know how it works and what you're obligated to tell a patient ahead of time. No one informed either of us at the time that we may get an outstanding bill in the mail in this amount after the fact, no one mentioned anything about deductibles or out of state or any of the above, which had they we might have made a different decision that day. This bill is absolutely ridiculous. The fact that nobody will return a phone call is absolutely ridiculous. I'm sure all of the 4 and 5 star reviews posted here are pre bill in the mail once they've returned home. If anyone from Doctors On Call is actually reading this, know that we have tried repeatedly to get your billing department on the phone to no avail, there's no email contact provided, and a check in the amount of $1 is what is on its way in the mail. If you are on vacation in Maui and you get sick with a fever, I highly encourage you to go buy Tylenol to bring your fever down and other over the counter medications until you get home, and do NOT go to this urgent care. For reference, my boyfriend works FOR Anthem Blue Cross and has the best PPO policy through Anthem Blue Cross offered, and this is still what this urgent care is trying to bill us. So if you think you have a better PPO than he does and that this won't be you... think again.

The culprit! Look at that surface. A little water and it's as slippery as ice!

You can do it on the CVS app or the website. Times are usually available, and walk-ins are accepted as well. I managed to make an appointment on the same day. You check in at the kiosk, and just wait your turn. Valenso was the nurse practitioner who was there today. He was very friendly, personable, courteous, and professional. He makes you feel comfortable and at ease. You can come here for almost anything from minor injuries and illnesses to vaccines and injections to skin issues to earwax removal and then some. Overall, MinuteClinic is definitely useful. Super friendly staff. Clean and bright room. Very easy to make appointments for the same and next day.

That being said, I don't usually see my PCP unless I'm feeling like "Death is knocking on my door" and I always go in for an annual physical. This past weekend, we were experiencing a lot of rain and humidity which in Hawai'i, often comes with VOG, when the storm system comes from out South. So, when I woke this morning with some allergy symptoms, I decided to contact the CVS Minute Clinic instead of calling my PCP. The online process of contacting a CVS Minute Clinic was quick and easy. -Go to http://www.cvs.com. Select Minute Clinic. -You can look for the nearest site of Minute Clinic that is located in a CVS Pharmacy plus see what the waiting time is. -Make your selection and you will be assigned an appointment and a confirmation code. Your appointment time and code will be sent to your e-mail and phone (text). -Show up at least 5 minutes prior to your appointment to check-in at their dedicated kiosk. Of course, rather than scheduling an appointment, you can walk-in and they'll see you. However, just know that if you walk-in, those who have appointments will be seen before you. Today, I saw Reynard Nievera, ARNP, who was congenial and professional. He was thorough with his line of questioning as I described my symptoms. After taking my vitals, I told him that I was concerned that my symptoms were just due allergy to the VOG or possibly the onset of flu. Reynard took a couple of test samples and luckily it turned out that i was having allergies. He prescribed several medications which I was able to pick up from the CVS Pharmacy around the corner from this office. Also, I agreed to have follow-up calls to make sure the medications are helping to address and relieve my allergies. The Minute Clinic offers several programs that would augment those that your PCP would prescribe. Their business hours and locations are convenient (usually located inside a CVS store), especially if you're unable to get to your PCP on the same day. They even accept many health insurances. Go ahead and check online to see if you might be able schedule an appointment or walk-in to a Minute Clinic near you.

This was my first visit (and probably my only visit) to the Straub Benioff Medical Center - Hawai'i…read moreKai Clinic because my GYN, whom I've been a patient of for the past 30-plus years, had transferred from Kapi'olani Medical Center on Honolulu's Punahou Street. Admittedly, since moving into the Kaka'ako neighborhood, I've been spoiled by the short 2-mile drives from my home to Kapi'olani Medical Center, where my women's health care physicians are located. In the past, I've never had to travel any further than 8 miles to Kapi'olani Medical Center. However, because I was still recovering from my total knee replacement surgery, which was done in late July, I had to reschedule my annual September exam for my lady-bits to December. In June, when I called the women's health clinic to reschedule the yearly exam, the receptionist notified me that my GYN (Dr. Gary Kimoto) was transferring his practice to the Straub Benioff Medical Center - Hawaii Kai, and that scheduling patient visits past September wasn't available yet. The receptionist recommended that I call again in September to check availability for December. Of course, his office did inform me there were several other physicians within the Kapi'olani Women's Health Clinic who I could select for either an earlier appointment in October or November at the convenient Honolulu medical center, but, since I wasn't in a rush for an appointment and out of respect, I preferred to have Dr. Kimoto provide a referral. Anyway, I got the directions to this Hawai'i Kai Clinic from one of the receptionists, who gave succinct instructions to drive and turn left onto Lunalilo Home Road from Kalaniana'ole Highway, turn into the driveway and parking lot where the Taco Bell is located, and look towards the mountainside of the parking lot for the covered walkway. Fortunately, we had a 30-minute leisurely drive to East O'ahu during mid-morning, didn't encounter heavy traffic, and arrived 20 minutes before the anticipated check-in time. Upon entering the clinic, five receptionists were either handling phone calls or attending to walk-in patients. One of the friendly receptionists greeted me, and I informed her of my appointment time and provided her with my identification and medical insurance cards. She verified that all the information was on file and pointed towards the patient lobby on my left. I waited no longer than 15 minutes when Dr. Kimoto's nurse assistant, Victoria, came out to escort me to an examination room. While following her from the lobby to the exam rooms, I started to feel like I was in a labyrinth and did my best to look for clues that would lead me out. Unlike sitting in a cold examination room at the medical center while having my vitals taken and verifying my medical information, the exam room was comfortable, warm, and cozy. I was so relaxed that even my blood pressure and pulse rate, which are usually elevated due to "white coat syndrome," were at low levels like when I was an avid runner. LOL! If I lived in East O'ahu and needed convenient, compassionate, and quality health care with friendly service, I'd recommend this clinic. However, I don't know whether this clinic is equipped to handle major medical emergencies or procedures.

But after 2 failed attempts to schedule an appointment, my sister referred me to MinuteClinic. I've had a rash irritation for about a month now and the over-the-counter cortisone cream just wasn't doing the job. When my sister, who is a registered nurse by profession, saw my rash she advised me to see a doctor to get a prescription for something stronger. My sister made all of the arrangements where she scheduled my appointment online to this MinuteClinic. She texted me the confirmation number and I drove to this location. This MinuteClinic is located deep inside Moili'ili Longs. As I walked up there was a kiosk where you check in by typing your confirmation number for the appointment and other personal information. At that time one of the staff came to check up on me but she realized I didn't require further assistance, I completed the check in with breeze. During the check in process, I was a little hesitant with the system requesting my credit card information for future balances due, after my insurance coverage. Call me old school as I'm used to waiting for the bill to come in and you write a physical check. I had to trust the system so I eventually agreed. Once all completed, Dr. Ivrys Dukes came to greet me and escorted me into a private office. At that time I presented my insurance card and DL as identification. She inquired on my visit and as what a physician would ask, she questioned me thoroughly to get a better understanding of my rash irritation. My blood pressure and temperature were taken with no signs of illness. She then advised me the use of cortisone with some steroids (mid-level) and at that time I mentioned previously using it for an allergy when I worked in the floral industry. When I advised her I picked up my prescription at Kaneohe Bay Shopping Center Long's, she called to confirm and indeed I was previously prescribed triamcinolone. She made arrangements for me to pick my prescription up at the same Long's as I was to report to work later in the day. Overall, I had a surprisingly very pleasant experience at this MinuteClinic and wouldn't hesitate coming back again. Saves a trip to your PCP where it may take time to schedule an appointment and pleased with TLC service extended to me at the MinuteClinic. 2020 #20
