I can't tell you how many times I've known what I want, but I can't get anyone to unlock/open the cabinet for me because they are too busy having a 30 minute conversation with a friend at the cash register/front counter. And the organization and layout is another pet peeve. I buy all my supplements online now at iHerb. Great prices, super convenient. This "health & wellness" supplier has been around for a long time and stock a great range of big name brands like Blackmores as well as lesser known ones. They mainly stick with vitamins, natural cosmetics and homeopathic medicines, but do have a fair amount of food and definitely all the basics for a healthy kitchen. You can get your bulk oils etc here as well as exotic-sounding but standard health shop fare like tempeh, manuka honey, goat's yoghurt and protein bars. The only purely organic market I've seen so far, Dr. Earth is a decent natural foods shop. It carries an adequate variety of organic products in a slick location. It can get a bit frustrating to find what you want; since there aren't many options brand-wise, many of the products are all scattered on the same shelf without much indication of where to look. I saw only one store worker, who was busy ringing people up at the cash. Many of the items in the store don't have prices on them, which was annoying especially since I couldn't find anyone to ask. While on the topic of pricing, I found their items to be outrageously expensive. $20 for muesli? $45 for a bottle of maple syrup? I didn't even want to look at their selection of vitamins and other natural products in order to avoid stressing about how I could find the same things online for much, much less. But since this is the only place of its kind in the vicinity (as far as I'm aware), they've got the ability to assign high markups as long as the customers will pay. Compared to the vast and fairly priced organic health stores I've seen abroad, this one can't even be considered in the same category. Their selection of fruits and veggies is tiny and since most of the products they sell are Australian, I would have expected the prices to reflect that. Alright, I know this isn't Wal-Mart here, but I couldn't find ANY discounts or specials. I'd probably return only to get some bulk teas or nuts. There were quite a few customers that day, I did sense a hype about this place since it's one of few in Sydney, but it doesn't justify the ridiculous prices. I just bought the cleverest idea ever! It's a water bottle which actually filters the water while you drink and I found it at Doctor Earth. Doctor Earth in Newtown is an enormous health food/ healthy living store which caters to so many needs and they play really cool music there, Billie Holiday (well I think it's cool). Doctor Earth has everything you can imagine in regards to health food and supplements, I am a tea drinker and for me it's perfect as they have enormous glass jars with a wide selection of high grade teas from which to choose. They also have cookware, eco friendly skincare and they have really cute fair trade toys. If you want to live a bit healthier or help save the world, check them out. read more

A pretty awesome health food shop, not that I would know really. I just walked on in as a whim and the place struck my fancy, as a gym-goer. Theres a wide range of foods, like an IGA for the average health food freak. A small selection of meats and poultry, heaps of idsles of cooking materials, oils, juices, health vitamin suppliments you name it. If you're looking for a place that has what you're looking for in stock, I'd say this place is pretty likely to have it for you, otherwise, the staff are friendly enough to send where ever you need to go. Dr Earth has a great selection of products and I am more than willing to pay a little more for that. It would get a top rating based on that alone if the shopping experience wasn't so woeful. My gripe comes from very poor customer service and a poorly run business. - It seems like about 1/3 of products in the store do not have prices on them. When you pick the items up and take them to the register to find out how much they are, the staff usually sit there for a few minutes scratching their heads before they make up some price out of nowhere. I've paid about 20 different prices for the exact same product I buy every week, despite telling them multiple times (nicely) they need to display prices or at least put them in their system. - Their computer system is a joke. It's not transparent, so you can't see what you're being charged as the products are scanned. You end up forking out the cash before you even know they've got it right, and most of the time they get it wrong. - The clutter in this place is unbelievable. The problems they encountered in the previous, much smaller store have not been rectified by getting a larger floor space. There is crap everywhere, especially on the counter, as someone else mentioned. There's no space for you to put your stuff up there because you've got cakes and perfumes scattered all over the place. - The staff are constantly rushing back and forth between the front of the store and the back room. You can't stand there for one minute looking without being bowled over by them, even when there are alternative paths they could take. - Their membership system is not very effective. Firstly, there are no loyalty cards. I have to remind them that I am a member each time I buy something. Then I have to repeat my (kind of long) surname several times before they identify me. A card to scan would be so much more efficient. Each time I come into Dr Earth I leave feel frustrated and angry. I urge the owners to try to fix these problems because I truly do want to keep buying from there. read more

So I have never written a Yelp review before because I really don't like to take part in ruining a businesses potential profits. However, I really had to write about my experience with this company because I don't believe any customer should be exposed to the disrespect and condescending attitude that I faced today by the managers and employees. I could honestly say that out of all the day-to-day businesses I have ever been exposed to in my 21 years of living, this has been the absolute WORST experience I have ever had. I bought a product that gave me an allergic reaction and the minute I explained my situation to the employee, her attitude portrayed to me that I wasn't truly going to be helped. Instead of listening to her customer's feedback, she was defending the product and telling me that they can't do anything about it and that I should take it up with the manufacturer. Obviously, I was not happy with that response. The manager came into the picture and to be frank, his attitude was even worse (not sure how that was even possible). He told me he would take down my information and call the manufacturer on my behalf and "get back to me." From his belittling and rude remarks, I knew the second I leave the store he would never truly take care of my situation. I then asked if he could handle it now in front of me which is when he resorted to calling the manufacturer. After explaining the situation to them, they were GLAD to refund him, so that he could refund me. However, he STILL REFUSED. Customers in the store who were listening to the situation agreed with me and were appalled at his behavior over $50. I refused to argue with him anymore, knowing that no matter what I said or did, I wouldn't receive the refund I deserved. I left the store and left him the faulty product. THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE I HAVE EVER WITNESSED. DO NOT SHOP HERE. YOU WILL BE DISRESPECTED AND NOT SATISFIED WITH THE PRODUCTS. read more

I used to be a more regular shopper at Doctor Earth in Newtown, but now visit less frequently for a variety of reasons, predominantly because I buy a lot of things online, but also because the service is hit and miss. Some of the staff are the nicest possible people. Other staff members come across as imperious and disinterested. I experienced both such employees today in relation to purchasing an item that was listed as being several dollars cheaper on the shelf compared to the price that came up at the register. The cashier told me I was mistaken and looking at the wrong label on the shelf. I checked the shelf again after paying, returned to the front counter, a second staff member was called to investigate and she apologised more than once after realising I was correct. The difference was then refunded. I was hesitant to go in today because of the patchy service, and I will be hesitant to return. read more

The blonde big girl next to the register was extremely rude and unprofessional. I live in the area and do not recommend anyone to go to this store. The owner, well I am not so sure where he is coming from. My unpleasant experience with his scabbiness means I will no longer shop there. I ordered x2 small posters, which turned out to be incorrect ones. I returned to exchange & as I didnot have my docket he insinuated I had not purchased them from there. Looking back thru my recepits that I actually keep there were a number of 'unitemised' items [not specific] that cud have been these small posters. [@ $7.95]. He was unhelpful & rude to me in a store filled with customers & i was very embarassed. I am not in the habit of 'returning petty items' to take advantage of a store I frequent!! The store is good if you're looking for variety - but super expensive. My local store actually stored some of the same items for a third of the price. Sure it's harder to find quinoa pasta but it shouldn't quite be $9 something a pop either... so go there to check out what they have but don't be a fool and pay that much for pasta. i know the owner and his passion for the business, however, over the last few years, i have foundthe service to be absolutley abysmal. Customer service is extremely poor and they seem more interested in playing very very very loud and unpleasant music.I often leave when the music is so loud and i cannot concentrate on what i need to buy there, so they lose my custom. I wish the owner would get in staff who are very friendly andhelpful and this doesnt seem to exist in the newtown store.
