I, along with 6 of my friends, decided to go riding at Doby while camping in the Governer Dodge State Park. Afer trying for days to find reviews, all I could find was one terrible review, but since Doby was the only stable in Dodgeville, we decided to go.
We chose the one hour ride around the state park that was supposed to be for "advanced" riders, promising a lot of trotting and adventure. Although there were brief periods of trotting every few minutes, these bouts seemed misplaced and random and quite honestly weren't a lot of fun. The two guides kept talking about a two hour ride that was full of galloping and more adventure, but this option wasn't even available when I called to make the reservations, so I'm not quite sure why they kept referring to it. On the same thought, the guides were kind of friendly, but spent most of the ride talking to eachother or texting on their phones, and looking annoyed when a couple of my friends' horses decided to take a random detour through a cornfield in the middle of the ride. This wasnt my friends' faults, and the guide's method of fixing the situation was to push her horse into the back of my friends' horses, who then decided to start kicking. Once we finally got the horses going (and this detour was of no fault to of the horses, i blane bad training) the guides decided to tell a delightful story about how the last time someone was on one of the horses that was misbehaving, the rider got tossed off of the back of it. Great story to tell to my friend who was a little aprehensive about riding at all. I was riding behind my husband and his horse would try to kick me, or buck my husband off everytime he tried to get the horse moving. I happen to be an expirienced rider so I was alright with the tempermental horses, but to the average rider, it could be scary.
The ride was somewhat entertaining, and my friends had a lot of fun, most of the time, but if it wasn't the only stable in Dodgeville, I would say I would never go back. Chances are that I will, since we camp in the park a lot, but I hope they get this mysterious 2 hour ride back and take the time to propertly train their horses for trail riding before expecting people to comfortably ride them. The only difference between their 45 minute "calm ride' through their property and the one hour "advanced ride" through the park is the (outrageous) price tag. 30 dollars for one hour of listening to our guides talk about thieir wild parties and boyfriends wasnt exactly my idea of a good time. Bottom Line? Get some better guides who actually care and take the time to properly match up horses to each individual. read more
