They became an outlet for women to get out of the house and to assert their independence by allowing them to get involved in politics during a time when they were expected to be homemakers. Women's clubs helped to launch the women's rights movement. The Punta Gorda Woman's Club was formed in 1925 when three clubs consolidated, The Ladies Fortnightly Club, The Women's Club Civic Association, and The Married Ladies Club. They came together to be able to be able to build a one story Spanish Mission style building in 1926 on land in downtown Punta Gorda donated by Judge William Fenmore Cooper from Illinois. Throughout the years the building housed stage productions, dances, meetings and dinners. The building housed the first library for 30 years and during WWII it was used as a USO. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. In 2000 the Woman's Club transferred the deed to the building to Punta Gorda Historical Society. The building is available for rent for private functions from the Woman's Club.

After golf we prefer the bar rather than the main dining room. Their bar menu has shrimp tacos, beef Wellington, mussels and ahi tuna and many other upscale meals. We do miss the live music in the lounge. Sigh. Folks if you want a fantastic meal this is where you need to go. The main dining room has a fantastic menu which includes steakhouse fare and one or two seafood dishes. The lounge has an upscale bar menu. All in all I have no idea why it was so easy to get in. I'm guessing that many Floridians were up north for the holidays.

We didn't have a reservation but were seated promptly in about 10 minutes. This must be a popular place for celebrations as we were asked by 3 different people, literally every employee we interacted with, if we were celebrating anything...tonight we were just celebrating dinner! I was prepared to splurge and spend any amount of money tonight. Started with a couple of old fashioned drinks. They had an impressive Bourbon menu, however...They didn't have the Blantons Gold, didn't have the regular Blantons, No Eagle Rare, only had enough Four Roses for one, it was hard to get anything special as the actual selection was limited. We ordered the $22 Bacon wrapped scallop appetizer and were disappointed to only get 3 very small scallops. They were good but we expected more for the price. How do 2 people split 3 tiny scallops? They came on a bed of spinach, which I enjoyed. I ordered the 11oz strip steak with blue cheese crust which was cooked as ordered and tasted fine. Nothing special, but a decent steak. My wife enjoyed the pink snapper however, she ordered rice and it came with potato wedges instead. Our server was very nice and was attentive. However the second round of drinks took too long to come to the table. Like 15 minutes too long. Our meal with appetizers and drinks and tip was around $200. We will definitely come back and I might even try their all you can eat bbq option. Maybe I'll be celebrating something...

The location is easily located via gps and is mainly long stretches on the same two roads before arriving. The driveway is lovely and secluded with ponds to look at on the short drive up to the venue location. The barn, main house and bridal suite are set back perfectly. They are grand but still inviting. You can tell that time went into decorating this venue because no detail was spared. From family bibles and photos of a wedding, to wedding dresses of the brides in the family- you feel like family and warmly welcomed. The owners were so warm, kind and accommodating. There is a large tree on the property that was perfect for the ceremony portion of the wedding. The grounds have plenty of room for tents to be set up for a lovely reception as well. This is a well thought out venue for a perfect outdoor wedding. My ONLY warning is - you must love animals. Luckily, we all adore them and we're so happy to see cats, large dogs(kept inside the main house and were quiet the whole time) and horses. They even allowed our bride to take some photos near one of their gentle horses. You will NOT be disappointed with this location or family. They were a blessing and made the whole event so spectacular for my best friend!
