The San Ysidro DMV field office looks relatively new! This state-of-the-art facility has a self-serve kiosk to avoid waiting in line. DMV kiosks are convenient and offer services that are quick and easy. No wait times and open daily! I scheduled an appointment for my daughter to take her behind-the-wheel test at 9 AM. We arrived early at 8:45 AM and were directed to window 8 for early check-in. They checked us in and furthermore instructed us to bring our vehicle around for inspection before heading out to take the driver test. I'm not even exaggerating when I say, we waited an additional 50 MINUTES outside in our vehicle, in the hot blazing sun (no shade) before my daughter was able to take her driver test. I was very disappointed in the lack of organization and communication. At times, it seemed both instructors seemed dazed and confused about who was next in line. Mind you, there were (3) separate vehicle lanes and many people were not made aware of which lane they were designated. In the end, my daughter passed her driving test and is now a licensed driver in the state of California. We are super stoked and very proud of her! I will definitely reconsider coming back to this DMV in the future! read more

If i would I would rate it a 0 due to a specific employee. I am submitting this complaint regarding an employee working at Lane 10 at the San Ysidro DMV on June 24 at approximately 3:20-3:30 PM. This was one of the most frustrating customer service experiences I have had. The issue was not that the employee could not immediately solve our problem--it was her attitude, lack of professionalism, and unwillingness to listen. When I arrived, I checked in using the DMV QR code. The only option displayed was "Vehicle Registration." There was no option related to driver's licenses or identification cards, so I completed the check-in process without selecting a service. When we were called to Lane 10 and explained why we were there, the employee immediately focused on the vehicle registration issue and repeatedly interrupted our explanation. We were returning to the DMV because we had followed instructions given to us during a previous visit. We attempted to complete the process online, but the DMV website informed us that our records were ineligible and directed us back to a DMV office. Every time I tried to explain this situation, the employee either ignored what I was saying or repeated the same question without addressing the information I had already provided. I attempted to show her a screenshot of the message from the DMV website, but she appeared unwilling to review it and continued dismissing our explanation. It felt as though she had already decided not to listen before understanding the issue. What I found especially unacceptable was her behavior. She repeatedly rolled her eyes, appeared visibly annoyed, and at one point said "oh my God" in a rude and frustrated tone. As a customer who remained calm and respectful throughout the interaction, I found this behavior completely unprofessional. By the end of the interaction, it felt like she was more interested in getting rid of us than helping us. She quickly wrote down instructions, sent us to the computer lab, and moved on without making any real effort to understand the problem we were trying to explain. Public-facing employees represent the DMV, and customers should not be treated with impatience, disrespect, or dismissive behavior. I left feeling frustrated, embarrassed, and disappointed. I hope management reviews this incident and takes appropriate action to ensure other customers do not have a similar experience. read more

Didn't think I'd ever write a review for a DMV. But, I had no appointment on a Friday to get a Real ID in order for me to fly after that requirement in May. I was in and out within 30 minutes and I'd recommend getting there right when they "open." Online it says 8 AM but I got there at 7:30 AM and there was already a line and people coming in and out. Staff was prompt and pretty friendly. Even when I had a question, the answer was pretty solid. Moved pretty fast too! Make sure you fill out the application online to get a confirmation through email because it helped. I did it the night before. read more

Improve the drivers test experience. Showed up early for a test, when I finally get to the front of the line they ask everyone what time their appt is and when someone down the line said 12, he said imma take them in before you. Mind you I'm on time he is late. This person didn't have all their paperwork ready the second intake dmv worker goes on break exactly when he told me to get back in line. Now I am waiting behind the dmv waiting in the car, there is only 1 instructor and 5 cars ahead of me. My appt was at 12:20 and it's now 1pm and I am still waiting here for this 1 instructor to finish 5 cars. They need more instructors what's the point of appointments. read more

Just wanted to update my review in case you're trying to get a Real ID before the enforcement deadline of May 7 when they actually aren't going to let you on domestic flights without a Real ID or passport. Go online and fill out the Real ID application if you can to make the process quicker. If you don't, go ahead and use the computers at the DMV itself to fill out the app and hold onto your application number. If you don't have an appointment you could get in the appointment line. It moves fairly quickly. I came "late" at around 9. Instead of waiting in line though, I used the DMV's 'Get in Line' feature on their website so that I could just get a number on my phone and potentially wait in my car till it was called. I believe it's $36 to get your driver's license changed to your Real ID and they do make you take a new photo for it so be ready for that. Also make sure to pay attention on the website to the documents you need. You can always use their online chat to confirm if the documents you have will be sufficient enough. The whole process would have taken me maybe an hour but I accidentally brought a photo copy of my birth certificate instead of the real thing. I tend to prefer this location because it's so spacious with a lot of seating and seems pretty new. read more

The good part is there's no waiting if you make an appointment. The bad part was taking the vision test. There's so much glare it's a joke. It was worse for me because I have astigmatism in one eye. The clerk admitted there's a lot of glare. She told me I failed the vision test in one eye and to come back within two months with new prescription. She told me that for the appointment it's best to be prepared so nobody waste anybody's time. My prescription was only 4 months old. Even the fingerprint sensor barely worked due to the glare. She told me to move the sensor to the edge of the counter and move my elbow down and cover it with my other hand. When I said that was because of the glare she laughed it off. She never told me about form DL 62 which lets you take the test in your optometrist office instead of the DMV. So as a final twist the next day I chatted the DMV to ask how to get form DL 62. The chat agent looked me up in the system and said there was no note of me failing the test and everything was being processed as normal. So I don't know if the agent ended up being nice or more incompetent. read more

Never in a million years would I expect to be writing a Yelp review for a D M V. But seriously, I had a pretty good experience here recently. Came for a DL renewal w/ no appointment. Arrived on a Friday afternoon at 11:45 am. Line was out the door. Finished at 1:25pm. That's not bad at all! PARKING There's a pretty big parking lot with like 6 rows of parking, all dedicated to the DMV. CLEAN There's a lot of seating inside and is pretty modern and clean. Def a step above most DMVs in San Diego. VIRTUAL LINE If you're planning on waiting here w/no appointment, get online and jump in the virtual line. You select the location and input your name & phone number. It's AWESOME. They text you when to show up so you actually don't even have to physically wait there. I personally just stayed there on site, but I got a text when it was almost my turn saying to head to the DMV. So convenient! If you're already there, still get in the virtual line because you'll be immediately assigned a ticket number so you'll be ahead of the others who are just physically standing in line waiting to check in. Once you're at the front, they'll check you in and give you a piece of paper with your name and your ticket number on it. DL RENEWAL If you have to renew your driver's license, I highly recommend you start the process online. You can fill out the application, update your address, voting info, pay the fees, and choose to take your driver's test virtually/online too. If not, you'll just have to spend more time filling out paperwork when you're there. And they might make you take the test there too. When you're done, they email you a code. Make sure to give it to them at check-in and remind them of it at the window. If you do the process online like I did, you can choose from 3 different tests, virtual proctored test, virtual e-learning course, or in person at the DMV. I'd go w/ the e-learning course. You just listen to the course and take short quizzes. It was pretty easy. The lady at window 20 was really nice and was like, "Wow good job" when she saw I did everything online already lol. DL RENEWAL FEES I paid $41, which you can pay in advance online or pay there. VISION CHECK You'll need to read a few lines from the eye chart with both eyes, covering one eye, and covering the other eye, so be prepared for that. They usually ask you to read from the chart with the sticky note on it. PHOTO Yup, sadly they will not let you reuse your current photo where you look all young and hot. Nope. You gotta take a new one, so hopefully you're ready for your close-up with that oh-so-flattering flash photography! I sure wasn't, lol. Don't make my mistake! Haha. read more

What a surprise today to see a good place like the San Ysidro DMV. I went on a busy day but the organization was well organized. Upon (early) arrival, I was checked in and told my number would be called. I was called before I could find a seat. I paid my fee, took a quick vision test, and had my picture taken. All employees were friendly, efficient, and in a customer service mindset - unheardof in the 50+ years I have visited ANY California DMV. I was in and out in ten minutes or less. Terrible experience, waiting for driving test. Checked in, 30 minutes early, at the counter, for the behind-the-wheel test. In vehicle line for examiner, 20 minutes before appointment. Only 4 cars ahead of us. One hour and 15 minutes later (75 minutes), the examiner finally started the test process. Reason for VERY SLOW moving line? Three examiners. The lady examiner helped one car ahead of us, then disappeared and never came back. One male examiner helped one car ahead of us, then went into the building for over 25 minutes. Coffee break? The remaining male examiner kept getting side tracked, doubly tasked with vehicle verifications in the other lane. He also went into the building for over 15 minutes. POOR manpower support for driving tests. When we left. 7 cars were in line, waiting for the same pathetic process. San Ysidro DMV management needs to do better! Quite possibly the best experience, I've ever had at a DMV. My wife had to renew her ID and we opted to get the Real ID. When I had to get the Real ID, they were very strict on paperwork and things. It took me about 90 mins from beginning to end. This is when the Real ID first came out. We booked an appointment, got in front of a long line and went to the check in right away. As soon as she gave us our number, we were called to the window. We didn't even walk 2 feet and we were already called. The gentleman asked for our confirmation number since we did our application online, and verified all the info. He asked for the paperwork and we brought tons with us and he accepted the first two proof of residency that we gave him. We had a total of 6 different types of documentation just in case. He accepted our Lease and IRS letter. It was funny because our lease was like 50 pages long -lol They made photo copies of everything and while he was waiting for that, he suggested that my wife get in line for the photos as it was starting to get long. He said I can wait for all the paperwork and stay with him. I thought that was nice that he wanted this to be a quick procedure for us. The Real ID was only $33 dollars and she got her photos taken and we were in and out within 20 minutes!! Note that the hours on this Yelp page are now wrong, they open at 7AM and Wednesday at 9AM. I've been going to this DMV for year and will continue to do so. read more

Did I make an appointment beforehand and get there on time? Yes. Did it still take 25 minutes to get to a window? Yes. However, this is the nicest DMV I've been to- I actually didn't feel like a sardine in a godforsaken place! The lady at window 13 today was efficient and answered my questions at a good clip and highlighted things and phone numbers for me. Will I still need to go back in to a DMV office after this to get my registration sticker? Lol yes, because it's still a DMV. Had to step back into the DMV for the REAL DL if you have to go to the DMV and we all have too before Oct 2020 this is the place to go. Make an appointment they can be anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 weeks out or more. My Apt was at 1:00 I was out by 1:46 really and I picked the day and time. This is a cake walk. The 3 staff I encountered were funny and knew the system. There was no hassle and no drama. *^*^*^*^*^** TIPS TO REAL DL/ID *^*^*^*^*^*^ Here is the reason why follow these steps and the Real DL/ID will be yours on your first trip. 1) make an apt 2) visit the DMV website to see what paperwork you need 3) This is the ace that you need to make it to the photo stage so pay attention. I counted 4 people that where turned away for missing this part. The Proof of Residency the best, best, best, thing you can bring for this is an official document sent to you by the DMV such as your car registration. If it has your name and your addy your good to go and it's already in your car. 4)Don't forget your SS Card 5) Passport 6) the cost is 28.00 just pay it in cash 7) never let your government issued identification expire. I hear clapping inside and about 20 windows worth of employees sitting in the waiting area inside listening to one person speak. I understand sometimes businesses open a few minutes late. Sometimes the owner gets caught up and get there a little late, employees don't arrive in time, someone's dog got ran over, etc... this is a government building paid by tax payers. BEST DMV - organized - patient and friendly staff - moves quick - very clean We all hate being in the DMV line. That's a given. I live close to a DMV office in San Diego proper but I refuse to go there because it's always been a pain - all. Couple yrs ago someone I met who lived in Otay Mesa tipped me off about this being the best DMV office. I decided to try it out and was flabbergasted how well and quick the experience was (pre-pandemic). I've appointed myself to come back here every DMV appointment. It's like discovering a HIDDEN GEM. I returned years later (during/post pandemic) and will say the same excellent service! That day I went the DMV opened at 0800. Usually, at other DMVs you'd go as early as you can to stand in their line before they open. Well, at this DMV I arrived at 0810 and the parking lot was barely filled. No line outside. I walked in the mail doors and a section area for "appointments only" and a section for "non-appointments". Went to the non-appointments and there were about 7 people ahead of me. Huge lobby had ample spaced out seating - 50% empty. Employees are very patient, friendly, and very willing to help. This part of town ESL is dominant and I loved that every employee pretty much was fluent in Spanish and patiently helping the people. Other DMVs you won't get this kind of professional customer service - other DMVs have rude employees. The staff here look like they work in a very positive work environment and they like their job and passionate with helping with the processes. It makes a difference! I barely sat in a chair and wait, I was always seeing someone and getting my things done. Also, they take pretty good DMV pictures here. My previous photo I got so many compliments (lol). This time around, I noticed the person handling the camera would look at the picture and request if a retake is necessary for whatever reasons might be need adjustment. I cannot express how organized is. 1) front staff, if you have questions or etc they do a great job answering and directing you where to go or what you'll be doing. 2) young lady at Window 1 area handling all the computers you sign into and/or computers with texts in them, she assigns you a number manually after, and handling the camera. Multitasker!!! 3) stag at all the other windows going through the rest of the people in the lobby quickly! Always a number being called... they move people quickly! Usually, I spend half a day at the DMV. At this place, max 1.5hrs or less. They pass out these survey slips. Fill them out. The feedback goes to Sacramento to the big wigs. DMV Easy breezy DMV visit....what?? Is there such a thing? At least the appointment was cake. I booked online stating I needed a new license appointment so I could take my M1 test to get my permit. I needed that in my hot little hand so I can test drive allllllllllll the bikes. I arrived little before my appointment with my proper identification and of course anxious as no other...tests are not my forte and lead me to make myself sick. The Dragon says I should have a beer while I study and a beer right before I take the test but since this was 8am and I was heading to work after I figured my place of employment would frown upon this idea....coffee it would have to be. I lined up in the appointment line which was much shorter than the non appointment line. The line went through rather quickly, I was up at a window in no time after the first desk gave me the appropriate paperwork to fill out for a brand new shiny motorcycle license. After a quick eye exam and paying 33 bucks I went to window 1 to take my test. I was so nervous but I am happy to report I left the DMV with a motorcycle license in tote! All the people I interacted with were very professional and some even smiled at my bad jokes. If you have to go to the DMV save yourself a headache and make an appointment. I hate writing bad reviews (as you can see from my other reviews). It really takes A LOT for me to give one. With that being said, literally everyone but our last contact here was the rudest person. I walked in, temp was checked. My husband followed but they wanted all his paperwork, which I had, and that lady was awful. Our documents were "confirmed" and we waited for 2 hours. I needed a drivers license and a registered car. My husband needed a drivers license. We checked in and again they checked our paperwork but they checked us in under one ticket. When I walked up to the window, i explained what they said at the check in that we were under one ticket. She rudely said "I don't do that. You need to get another ticket for him". My husband went back and she checked my phone for the check in. She argued with me saying his number was called. He needed another ticket. But the ticket still linked to the first ticket. No help AT ALL. Meanwhile, my paperwork was not up to standard with my written lease, so I did not qualify for a verified drivers license (which they verified upon walking in AND when we got a ticket). I was upset and stated that if I would have known that at check in, I wouldn't have waited 2 hours. She proceeded to ignore and disregard their lack of understanding correct documents. No apology or anything. My husband declined the drivers license as we will have to return with another piece of mail. I opted for a drivers license and will just get a verified one later. We then proceeded to the registration line (which I don't understand why they can't do it all in one stop... MVD in New Mexico and other states, allows this so its not a huge waste of time). The ONLY reason I am giving this place one star is for the one star employee who helped us with the registration and because I cannot give it 0 stars. She was amazing! No hassles. She explained everything, we were going to have to come back for a VIN check as it was later and they were closing, but she got us in and we were out the door! read more

Let's face it. No one enjoys going to the DMV. It has been close to 10 years since the last time I came to this location and I honestly had to reread my review to remember what I had experienced that time. Glad I documented it because it was all a blur. Due to that experience 9-10 years ago and knowing that we're in the middle of a pandemic, I wasn't sure what to expect now, so I prepared for the worst. I was prepared with the thought in mind that I would have to wait hours since I couldn't make an appointment. However, I did my research on their website and made sure to bring every document I needed in order to process 3 different items I had planned to take care of: 1) Car registration renewal, 2) DL renewal and 3) Real ID. I also completed the application portion online for the DL renewal/Real ID and had all my documentation verified by a virtual advisor prior to showing up. On the day I showed up at the DMV, I arrived 25 minutes prior to opening and almost gasped for air when I saw how long the line was, but thankfully I didn't have to wait in that long line. Turns out, I was the first one to fall into the line for those who needed to get their Real ID's. What a relief! The second person who fell behind me (though he was wearing a mask), wasn't really following social distancing 6 ft apart protocols and kept trying to make conversation with me and get all close to my face, but luckily there was one nice staff member who kept reminding everyone in line to follow social distancing procedures. While in line, my temperature was taken and I was given a "Screened" sticker after being asked general health questions. Afterwards, I was moved into another line in which the staff members would let one person in at a time, taking into account how many people were allowed inside at once. That line I was in moved fairly quickly so once I was inside, the nice lady who helped me outside was now behind the main window, confirming what I was there for while also handing out "appointment" stickers that had numbers and letters which correlated with the window you would be called to. I literally sat, waited no more than a minute and I was then called to window 2. The lady who assisted me there was super sweet & patient and took care of the 3 items I was there for without any issues. Took my vision test, paid all my fees and then she asked me to proceed to window 27 to get my tags and new photo taken for new DL. The person who assisted me at window 27 was also super nice and got me out the door in no time! Overall, customer service was good. I had only one small minor, not so great experience with one lady who stood at the door as a watchful eye during the time I arrived. I approached her with a simple question just to confirm whether I was falling into the correct line since I didn't have an appointment and her response to me was, "Well, you can read right? There's a sign that says Appointment so that's where you go". Rude. I didn't let her bother me though since she seemed out of place amongst all the other DMV staff who were all nice except for her. Wait time was pretty good and it took about an hour to handle everything I needed to which also included the wait time outside. As for social distancing measures, if someone arrived without a mask, they were told that they could not be assisted. For the most part, people were standing 6 feet apart, but of course there were others either forgetting to do so and had to be reminded by staff. I have to say, I had a decent experience here recently compared to years ago and was happy with the way the staff handled everything. They definitely have a system going that seems to work well to be able to accommodate everyone while following social distancing protocols. You just have to be prepared when going here otherwise, you'll get turned away and told to come back as I've seen this happen to others who forgot to bring proper documentation or their mask. read more

Ok, last time I was here was in and out in like 45min. That was renewing license and even taking photo. I'm here for registration and I've been in line alone 1hr or so and I'm not even at the desk to get a number and I have gone only halfway through the line I've been in. So that's 2 hrs to get a number and get my paperwork to fill out. Wow. What changed at this location since last time? Should have made my appointment online but could not wait the 3 weeks out to get to DMV. BO in line is real and it kinda makes the whole wait even longer still too. Hopefully the DMV staff is not like that in Zootopia or I will not be out till dark! Yes Disney reference but it's so true. On the positive the location has a clean appearance and is nicely kept. Far out of the way by Otay so I assumed it would be quick like last time but obviously not. Same Day Update: OK originally had this review as a 3 star but after dealing with the staff OMFG. The lady at by he front desk was doing her job as best as she could being alone for quite a while with having to deal with both appointment and non appointment lines but when I finally get to see some one it happens to be the guy who has bellowing at everyone throughout the day. Not quick and efficient at all, has the audacity to have attitude with me? Like WTF?! I commented on how long I had been waiting (total of +3.5hrs, 2 hours to get #, then another +1.5hrs to be seen) and he looked at my ticket and said "you've only been waiting an hour and a half." I replied yeah but to get the ticket it was 2 hours. His response, "well next time make an appointment". I originally had put some mean words but I retract, why sully myself with words about that person. People get out of line and then jump right back in with no one commenting (racial favoritism, because I can bet you if I wasn't able to speak certain languages I would have not been able to do that, which I didnt. Back hurting and all from standing the whole time), people coming up to the counters to ask questions when someone else is being helped and no one commenting about that either... DO NOT GO TO THIS DMV UNLESS YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT! I've driven up to Oceanside and I've heard the Poway one is good too. The drive is almost about the time you would wait. read more

I went the DMV to get a regular ID I was stopped by Junior at the front door. I told him I was already in the system and did not want a real ID (my permit was already a real ID) he refused to give me a ticket number. He sent me back home for my social and said he wouldn't honor my appt so after I got a regular ticket waited three hours the person that saw me told me I didn't need my social after all like I initially told junior I asked for junior's name he said "the fuck I don't need to give u my name" And hid his badge from me This is very unprofessional and rude!! He shouldn't be working here if he hates his job so much and is gonna be rude to customers read more

Best dmv ever!! They have 27 Windows meaning lots of employees ready to help and shorter wait times also everything is new and the employees are nice. **Make sure to make an Appointment before coming and you will be promptly assisted.** On average with appointment we come out in under 1.5 hours These appointments can be made online at the dmv website. If you don't make an appointment, I don't feel sorry for you. On my last visit, I purposely did not make one just so I can see how it went.... What I noticed: Front counter person so the one who controls the speed of the lines. Pros: is able to help and guide you in filing the correct form to get you moving. Then you get your number to wait again, this time with the option to sit. Cons: loses track of who they chose from the appointment / non-appointment line. Then there's the impatient person who bypasses because they really need to ask their question which causes everyone to stare, then the front counter person forgets the non-appointment person was next and now they've allowed 6 appointment people to go.... there only one front counter person!!!!! At least that was the case on my visit. But I also noticed that this is necessary because if they process too many people ther will not be enough seats for waiting game number two. Once you move passed the first waiting game, you get to sit down and people watch. This is my favorite part. There's the "crap my family member is not here to translate for me Incase I get a non Hispanic clerk, the I'm came looking for a husband girl, the I came looking for a thirsty girl, the I came cus I need to figure out how I can lie about saying I never received my registration paper so I shouldn't have to pay the late fee person, the god I should've never moved to California person, the teen getting her driving permit (who is also taking a selfie with the duck face [male & female]), the holy crap I probably shouldn't be in here I might get deported person... me I just people watched on this occasion for the sole purpose of Yelp. Normally they make appointments and read my smart phone book. Once I get called it all goes pretty fast and you're done in about 5 mins. The one thing I did notice was who I imagine is the floor manager. On my entire visit I saw her on her smart phone for about 2 hours. She took her face off of it for about 20-25 minutes and that was only because staff came up and asked her a question. Once she answered or told them to go away, she was right back on her phone. I forgot to change my address on my license so I didn't get a renewal notice in the mail. My license was going to expire on my bday in a few days. I went online to make an appointment. But the only Dmv With an opening on my bday was San Ysidro. I was hesitant at first., but it was the only one. My appt. was for 10:40 am and I got there like 10 minutes late. No problem. I was pleasantly surprised with the Dmv itself and the employees. They were very helpful, ready to answer questions and they didn't look like they hated their job. Except the guy taking the photos. He looked like he Rea didn't want to be there. I was there maybe an hour. There were plenty of chairs, multiple windows were open and it was clean. Plenty of parking and the images i had of people selling piñatas and churros in the parking lot were quickly dispelled. So after I flunked the written exam I grabbed a dmv booklet and went home to study. read more
