I met Josh at my friend's wedding in Santa Barbara and asked him if he did wedding in San Luis Obispo. To my luck he was actually from the area! So I quickly booked him for our wedding in September 2014. Unfortunately, 3 months before the wedding, we had to push the date back a year because I had been diagnosed with breast cancer and had to undergo 9 months of treatment. Let me start by say, Josh I'm so sorry it took me so long to write this review. My wife and I got married in Santa Barbara on May 30th of this year. When we were in school at UCSB my roommate and I new Gavin Roy, so when it came time to find a DJ, it seemed natural to go through his company. Gavin was booked the day of our wedding, but after we explained what we were looking for, he did not hesitate in recommending DJ Hecktik (Josh). He was absolutely amazing. Even though he didn't have to he showed up at our rehearsal to make sure he was totally prepared for the ceremony and reception. I've been at weddings where the DJ tries to be the center of attention and others where they are so timid things get out of control and nothing seems to stay on track. Josh was amazing. He kept things going and worked hand in hand with our awesome wedding coordinator Toby Theule, to ensure things stayed on schedule, but never made the event about anything other than us. We explained to him that we both love bad 80's hair bands, but that those are tough to dance to so he expertly took Journey, Whitesnake and Bon Jovi songs and laid a danceable beat underneath them. People danced non stop from the first song he played until the last. I can't even tell you how many compliments we got about him. Going in, we figured we would probably have more people compliment us on the food (which was also great), but I can't tell you how many people raved about him after the fact. Josh (DJ Hecktik) was an absolute pleasure to work with for our wedding in Carpinteria, CA. He's got a great personality: he's easy to talk to via email/phone and is super responsive (plus he has a great voice for speaking to your audience or introducing your wedding party). Beyond that, he is a veteran so you need not worry about any technical difficulties during your special day/event. My wife and I had him setup in two locations (front yard for ceremony and reception, back yard for cocktail hour). He brought equipment to accommodate both areas fluidly so he didn't need to move his entire station. We also had him mic-up our two acoustic guitarists who played during the ceremony, and he brought two Shure SM58s with mic-stands which worked perfectly. On top of that, he also brought up-lighting. Josh knows a lot of people in the Santa Barbara/Carpinteria area and to my knowledge has quite a bit of experience DJ'ing at most locations in the area. He had previously worked with our wedding coordinator and DJ'd at the venue, which made it a breeze for my wife and I. He knew exactly where to park, exactly where to setup and didn't bother us or the wedding coordinator with extraneous details during the day of. My wife and I wanted to give our special day the vibe that depicted us, so we provided Josh with enough material to cover say half of each the pre-ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner and dancing and then let Josh do what he does best. It was clear that he understood who we are and what we like; moreover, his mastery of judging and reacting to our guests/audience truly reflected his veteran abilities in the industry. Last thing I'll say: I really felt like I got more than what we paid for with Josh. He is very charismatic and professional, plus he even brought his DJ friend (DJ Epik?) at no extra charge. Plus, I asked Josh last minute to add in "Downtown" by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis which had literally just come out and he scratched it into the dancing portion no problem. Given how much we love to dance and bring together friends and family, it was a priority for us to throw an incredibly fun reception with a packed dance floor. In planning a wedding, it really helps lower the stress and anxiety when you know that your vendors are experienced, know what they're doing, and great people--that feeling of trust is EVERYTHING. Josh is not only a professional you can trust, he went above and beyond everything we imagined. Josh responded to our inquiry quickly and any questions we had afterwards in an extremely timely manner (whew! no bridezilla here!). His website was super easy to use to make our song choices for every wedding day related activity (who knew there were so many?!?). Josh went out of his way to meet me at our reception venue, to go over set up and any concerns the venue had about sound and worked out details with them. During that meeting, Josh and I also sat down and talked about what we liked as far as music goes, what our crowd was going to be like, etc. Josh even attended our rehearsal to better prepare for the next day. On our wedding day, Josh was at our ceremony site early, was set up before the ceremony started and did an amazing job. At the reception, he was an EXCELLENT MC (even reading out something I wrote about Chinese Tea Ceremonies--which he knew nothing about). He and his team had music playing all night--cocktails, dinner, speeches, and of course dancing! He had EVERYONE dancing. I mean EVERYONE. 80 year-olds to 2 year-olds. He played a little something for everyone, played some classics, played some newer songs. Josh even got one of my uncles, whom I've only ever seen smile maybe once in my entire 32 years of life on this earth, to get up and dance.... and BOY DID HE DANCE. Shocking. But that's a testament to Josh. Josh knows what he's doing and he has a passion for it. You just have to let him guide you through the process and trust him. All in all, not only is he a great DJ and MC, he's a great person, with a kind and humble heart. Every time we have run into him around town after our wedding, he thanks us for choosing him and trusting him with our wedding! ARE YOU KIDDING ME, DUDE?!?!?
