    Cabin at Dixie

Nice place Dudes! First time at a dude ranch so was not sure what to expect. Friendly staff, large ranch, rustic cabins, good country food, big bon fires. Got 2 great horse rides a day. Had pool but too cold to swim, good thing there was a jacuzzi. Could use some more group activities. Food was tasty but could afford some more options. Kinda tough for vegetarians in our group since meat was in side dishes too. Plus they take food away a bit quick, I mean I coulda stuffed myself a bit more! Yard games need some refurbing. Fishing hole needs some fish. But the Longhorn they brought in to show was might cool!

My friend and I had a really wonderful time a year back at this place. We really loved visiting the Bandera area, and had to hit up a dude ranch before leaving. We arrived late, and luckily were weren't the last ones to show up either. We came just for the horseback riding. The area is beautiful and the staff was exceptionally friendly (especially to us NJ girls). The horses they fixed us up with were very well behaved. The trail was relaxing and just very beautiful and peaceful. We ran into a few longhorns which was very cool. Definitely enjoyed taking some time out for this excursion.

An inherited Dude ranch passed down through generations. It isn't maintained as it probably once was. The rooms are clean but mattresses have popping springs. Rooms are in desperate need of maintenance or renovation. You only get 1 towel per person. A/C window unit struggles in the heat. Pool needed dire chemicals. Super cloudy. Hot tubs water was green with black mold on headrests. Horse ride was a super slow walk around the same general area. Guide was smoking the whole time and wasn't engaged. He never once said hi or anything. In my view, he was rude. One guide was nice and engaging if you engaged him in conversation. Horses were not well taken care of. They were saddled all day. There were about 60 goats. No where to get in a stall and rub them or play with them. About 20 longhorns and about 25 horses. There were about 5 pigs. This is not a working ranch. They keep some livestock for your viewing only. Staff was never engaging at all unless you asked them a question. Maybe TX isn't friendly or have that southern hospitality. Food was ok. If you are a cook or a foodie you will be underwhelmed. It would gave been a better experience to have farm fresh to table. They have the land to grow a garden but there sat a commercial food truck backed up unloading. We eat farm to table at home, it takes work, but it is so much better. We had meatloaf, broccoli and carrots, lettuce with ranch, mac n cheese once, pork, lettuce with ranch, steamed green beans, and rice pilaf. Breakfast was pancakes, sausage links once, and eggs, tortilla, beans, and potatoes with sausage mixed together. Hotdogs with sweet beans for lunch. If you don't cook yourself, you'll probably enjoy the food. Lemonade and unsweetened tea was served at meals. No sweet tea??? Were we even in the south? OJ and milk were room temp. We brought our own drinks to every meal. Marshmallows at campfire was a free for all. No Graham crackers or hershey bars. We went to town to buy our own so we could actually have smores. Only thing to do on the ranch was swim if you dared, corn hole on very weathered boards, horseshoes, throw or kick around some balls, games in a game closet, and take the horse slow walk, twice a day. Guides explain nothing and don't really care if your stirrups are properly heightened or not. Internet works at the main post for a 20' radius. I enjoyed the jukebox. Mostly, you just talk to your family. There were tons of Europeans with different languages, so conversation was greatly limited. They serve dessert before you even get down a bite. If you like to chew your food, don't expect to do it here. They are taking your plate before you eat half of it and in the middle of chewing. Lady in gift shop never said hi, kiss my butt, or welcome. I'm glad we came and played games as a family since all of our work prohibits sitting around doing nothing during the week, but I'm glad it was only a day and a half. This is strictly a dude ranch, not a working ranch. We have more livestock on our farm at home. Sure was sad to see a huge ranch that could be well maintained and working, but it wasn't. Another generation from being extinct. Bandera is a small strip of tourist buildings. Land in Bandera is rocky with no grass. It's definitely not a $1500 plus gratuity experience.

Beautiful ranch, friendly wranglers, and a very peaceful get away. I loved the horseback ride.

Took my dad for his first horse ride out on the trails here while we were visiting from California. Bobby the wrangler was very sweet and pointed out the pretty flowers on the trail and made the time enjoyable. $35 per person for a one hour ride was a great deal. Also loved all the cute deco and fun backdrops they had all over the ranch. We walked around the ranch after our ride and took tons of pictures. Lots of good photo ops here.

The highlight of our Texas trip was the Dixie Dude Ranch. From the food to the people it was a great place to completely unplug. We were there in the off season with only 9 of us so we may have gotten spoiled with extra rides and desserts ;) Plan on board games and ping pong in between rides, maybe toss in a fishing trip for an hour and then top off the night with marshmallows and a soak in the hot tub.

My husband and I stayed Friday-Sunday and had a great time! The food was excellent- tasted great and there was PLENTY to go around! The horseback rides were fun and there were plenty of activities to stay busy (ie. Pool/hot tub, horse shoes, corn hole, Volleyball, tetherball, ping pong, playground for the kids, a small pond to fish in, and a games closet). The horseback rides are very family friendly (slow walking in a single file line). We went on 4 horseback rides and didn't do the same trail twice.. all of which had great views. There are also extra activities that change each day... a band played one night and the next night they had a hay ride around the property and we got to watch them feed the longhorns. One day a lady brought in some horses for private lessons that you could sign up for for $30pp (which was really fun and worth it) The staff was all super friendly and the land was gorgeous. We hope to visit again!

    The apache bedroom

This is probably the coolest weekend stays I have ever had. I made reservations last minute and came alone. I figured it would be a different experience, but what I got was so much better. First the accommodations: I stayed in the Apache room, which had a bathroom and a king bed. The bed is surprisingly comfortable and better than most hotels. Decked out in wood and western get up, it was perfect for just me. I usually being extra blankets and clips for curtains because I'm a light sleeper and the sun wakes me up. This came in handy, because I had French doors leading to my room, and it helped block the sun out when I wanted to rest. Secondly, the grounds are wonderful. Serene, rolling hills surround the ranch, and the horses mosey along after riding hours. Mexican artwork fills the gaps in the yard, and there is even a little fishing pond to walk to. The pool is older, and I noticed there wasn't a filter system, but we just skimmed the pool ourselves and enjoyed the cool down in hundred degree afternoons. The hot tub was extremely relaxing at night. Third-- the staff and food. They are the best part of this place. They treat you like family and they feed you like granny is cooking up every meal. The food alone was just wonderful. Plenty to go around, and everything tasted like good southern food should.. Made with lots of love. I haven't eaten that good in so long. They feed you 3 times a day, so you won't go hungry. Fourth- the horse rides are perfect. They have slow rides and fast rides, and give you 2 times a day to go. The wranglers are knowledgeable and friendly. Loved riding up into the hills. Fifth- for the price-- you can't find a cooler thing to do. Even though I came alone, meals and all activities were spent with the people staying there. I met so many wonderful friends by coming for the weekend, and I will cherish the time we spent getting to know each other. It's like summer camp for adults and kids.. So get rid of the electronics.. Don't come to watch tv or expect the ritz. This is a ranch, you will wake up early and be entertained all day by things to do. I can't wait to come back with my daughter. :)

I'm a yearly fixture here, circa Spring Break. This is where I take my kids to unplug them from their electronics, and make a passing attempt to make them "real" Texans who have ridden horses. This is, ultimately, an existential experience. Do I find it annoying that there isn't broadband? Yeah... for a day. Then I get over it, and enjoy being unplugged myself. There are usually other kids for mine to play with, and they do all the things they don't do in suburbia -- climb trees, run around ditches, throw rocks, and scare one another around the camp fire. -- and that's exactly why I keep bringing them back. The horse rides are rather basic, but perfect for kids. They're also long, and through some beautiful country. There have been two occasions, however, where I've been on 'fast' rides, split off from the main party. They were awesome. I'm sure this has something to do with being nice and friendly with the staff, rather than an entitled whiner ;) If you're looking for a few days "away from it all", or have kids, or (as I've observed) a nice rendezvous for an assignation, this is a great place.

This is my second time at DDR, 2013/2012. With my son. We are making good memories thanks to staff and owners, This is definitely something you should do with the family. This 725 Acre historic ranch is perfectly tucked into a valley 7.5 miles from Bandera. No cellular service, no TV, no Internet except at Lodge limited slow wifi. Leave your techno crap at home or turned off in your vehicle. By day Ride horses, fish pond, nature walk, jump in pool and attend daily show/attraction they put on. Night play guitar or tell stories by fire pit. The staff are very friendly and will accommodate almost every request to make your trip memorable. Explore nearby Bandera, Medina, Kerrville, Camp Verde, Boerne, Comfort. Talk to Lodge house staff and work out a 2-5 hour loop to take you to a few spots and return back a different route. 3 Family Style meals, all attractions included in costs. Costs per person is worth the price. FR
