Discovery Point Trail is a worthwhile hike for those tourists exploring around the main Rim Village section of Crater Lake National Park. It's sort of like a good introduction trail to the sights and surroundings of Crater Lake.
Although there are so many different unique overlooks to stop at around Crater Lake's 33 mile rim...and for the most part when you've viewed one observation, you can sorta say that you've witnessed them all....but I'd classify Discovery Point Trail as an opportunity to get out of your car for a little stretching of your legs while enjoying some walking time instead of simply driving everywhere.
And when I mention walking...that's what I mean. Not even hiking because the elevation change along this trail is barely 100 feet. So all you have to do is simply stroll along Crater Lake's rim and pause for picturesque photo opportunities.
In total, Discovery Trail is very simple. It's 2.2 miles round trip. It's great for families. In more detail, this path departs from the Rim Village parking area. So...leave your car in the lot for as long as you'd like and start heading northwest. There will actually be a sign or trailhead for Discovery Point that can't be missed. Below the sign it'll say....1 mile ahead to Discovery Point.
Discovery Point is about as far as you can go. Although there wasn't a sign for this pinnacle/apex point when I visited, I just knew I couldn't walk any further as the trailway sort of faded away into trees and shrubs.
But...it was at this moment which I assumed was Discovery Point and ultimately where I found Crater Lake to be most photogenic.
Also, a good point about this Discovery Trail is that the iconic Wizard Island is featured as you hike....and Wizard Island is the centerpiece of it all. It's what makes Crater Lake monumental for capturing terrific picture moments.
I hiked Discovery Trail in late afternoon and got lucky with having the sun at my back. This afforded me ideal time to snap pictures without any obtrusive shadows.
Please keep this in mind because I assume if you stopped here in morning time you'd be stuck looking into the sun and the lake would probably have many glares to it. So, don't forget, lol....afternoons are best for coming here.
I will say that along this Discovery Point Trail there will be other nice chances where the trees and bushes fade away and you can pier out onto the lake without any disruptions.
And yeah, and although you can do this along so many of the observation overlooks from your car.....the reason that I'm writing about this Discovery Point Trail is because within Crater Lake NP...(I felt, imo) there were hardly any hiking trails and opportunities to really get away into nature and appreciate the outdoors within one of the Top 10 most beautiful lakes in the United States.
That's why I'm taking the time to recognize Discovery Point Trail. And also, it's situated beside Rim Village (in the heart of Crater Lake) where everyone stops for the Visitors Center, souvenirs, food, groceries, information, gifts, bathrooms, the famous Crater Lake Lodge, and overall....just time to rest and regroup for tourists continuing about their journey's.
By the way, also here at Rim Village is the hike and path up to Garfield Peak for more scenery to gaze upon Crater Lake. Though...this hike to Garfield Peak is much more elevated than the simple walk around the rim to Discovery Point.
Finally, I'm glad I got the chance to mention Discovery Point Trail. Although the windows to appreciate Crater Lake can be seen from almost any viewpoint around the rim....I just admired this hike because it gave me a chance to leave my car behind and breathe in some fresh air while getting in some hiking. I'd recommend Discovery Point Trail to everyone. read more
