It has now been 2 weeks and my pain level is about 50% of the level prior to the procedure. Dr Cha indicated I should see additional relief over the next 6 months. Given the severity level of back pain I had experienced for the past 30 years I am very pleased with the results so far. The Doctor and his team were very professional, answered all of my questions, and made me comfortable and confident prior to the procedure. My grandma suffered a stroke in October, survived many complications and is now at this nursing home. Due to the COVID-19, on March 11th they restricted all visitations for the safety of their patients (understandable). It has now been over a month since she has seen anyone in our family. Thursday afternoon, we received a heartbreaking call informing us that she hadn't been responsive in days, her vitals are low and we should say our final goodbyes.. could be a couple hours or days. As we all rushed over there, they refused to let us in to see her. Today, we gave the receptionist an iPad and asked that she'd set it up in my grandmas room. The iPad is set to automatically pick up FaceTime calls. Can't see her in person, at least we can see her, talk to her and let her know how much we love her through FaceTime. Hours later, in the middle of a FaceTime, one of the nurses comes into my grandmas room hangs up and closes the IPad case. Now we really can't see my grandma and she can't see us. We call, asked that it would be put back up and they refused. Said it was just temporary. We asked, are the residents not allowed to use cell phones? All other hospitals and nursing homes are allowing family members to call their loved ones. In fact, it is encouraged by primary care physicians!! The nurse, said oh they are allowed cell phones. But you cannot record her or our nurses. We explained that it is set like a phone, please this is all we have. She said, this is our policy you can call the director on Monday and then hangs up in our face. It is Easter, my grandma's favorite holiday, she is not promised an hour let alone until Monday. You must have no heart at all to strip away our rights and my grandmas rights at her last final stages of life. This has taken a toll on our entire family. This is an awful place. With some, not all, but some of the most heartless people working there. If you love your family members, do not bring them here.

In labor and delivery, the nurse told us that the facility was recently updated. All the medical equipment was new, and the fetal monitor they used was even wireless. The only slight hiccup was that there was nearly no room in postpartum care. Fortunately, we got the last room in the overflow floor. Having giving birth in another state, I was extremely impressed by how updated everything was in the overflow room - the shower was brand new, and the bed could be operated to lengthen or sit at various angles. For pain management, I was a little surprised that their policy is to give ibuprofen only upon request. At the previous hospital I was at, they had a regimen switching between Tylenol and ibuprofen. Parking was probably the most difficult part. The main parking lot is a little far, and you have to use a different entrance if you're coming in the evening (rather than the main entrance of the women's hospital). However, when we left, my partner was able to temporarily park in the rotunda to make the commute a little shorter.

This neurosurgeon recommended an L2-L3 lumbar fusion involving removal of the disc, placement of a titanium cage with cadaver bone and protein, and four screws. Surgery was actually being scheduled. What concerned us was that his own assessment stated there were no significant radicular symptoms and that the right hip and thigh weakness we were experiencing was not explained by the lumbar MRI and could have a non-spinal cause. Given the seriousness and potential risks of spinal fusion, we decided to seek two completely independent medical opinions before proceeding. Both physicians disagreed with the recommendation and strongly advised us not to go forward with the proposed surgery. That experience was extremely troubling to us. We are very grateful that we did not proceed without obtaining additional opinions. I cannot speak to the doctor's motivations, but I can speak to our experience: we were being prepared for a major lumbar fusion that two other independent physicians subsequently advised us not to have. If you are considering major spine surgery, please ask questions, understand all of your alternatives, and consider obtaining a second and even a third independent opinion before making your decision.

The doctor took that feedback personally, and was standoff-ish with me during my next appointment where they asked me to come back. Shannon and the staff there are nice but they don't listen to you and certainly don't care about helping you. Avoid this place at all costs. They call themselves an "institute" but there's no thinking outside of the box. There's no learning here or an openness to do so. Nor is there any adaptation to patients' needs. In particular, younger patients. They mostly seem to "treat" elderly people. They're therapy is mostly the therapists watching you do exercises you could probably do at home. The small bit of hands-on stuff they did wasn't helpful. They will rope you in with false promises then suggest expensive out of pocket treatments like PRPs. They also like to call you incessantly if you don't answer right away instead of just leaving a brief message. If I didn't answer the first 3 times why keep calling and not simply leave a message?! In the end, I wasted a lot of time and money bothering with this place and suggest you not do the same. If you have rare or persistent chronic pain issues you're better off avoiding this place. I'd write more but Yelp doesn't allow you to type that much for reviews.
