The little white building on 4th Street still wears its vintage RC Cola sign like a badge of honor, and the moment you push open the door, that familiar sizzle of burgers hitting the oil hits you like a hug from your childhood. We slid onto the stools at the old horseshoe counter, the same one I remember from when I was a kid, and watched the magic happen right in front of us. Patties kissed with bread for that impossibly soft center, fried in the shallow oil until the edges turned perfectly crisp and golden. My cheeseburger arrived "unsquoze," glistening and glorious, layered with that signature tangy sauce, crisp pickles, and onions that somehow make everything sing. One bite and I was twelve years old again--only this time I got to share it with my own family. The new owners have kept every bit of what made Dovie's legendary. Same perfect burgers. Same simple, soulful menu. Same feeling that you're exactly where you're supposed to be. My kids devoured theirs with the same wide-eyed joy I used to have, and we left with full hearts and fingers still a little greasy in the best possible way. Dovie's isn't just a burger joint. It's a living piece of Tompkinsville history that still tastes like home. If you've never been, go. If you grew up on these burgers, go back. It's every bit as wonderful as you remember.

We were a group of five and although it was a busy lunch, we were seated immediately. The interior is spartan, no design flourishes. But clean and tidy. Big menu even had chicken wings. salsa was mediocre but chips were great, and warm. My pollo chorizo had the white meat chicken cut into strips, the chorizo was on the medium side but overall it was a tasty filling dish. Everyone else had clean plates so no complaints from the group who mostly ordered different combo plates. One raved over the nachos. About as country Mexican as you can get, and that's fine with me. Hubby was all hot to try their chocolate gravy which was mentioned in the article. The waitress flatly stated it's not served after 10:30 even though the menu noted it was available "until we run out". It was around 12:30 and didn't appear very busy that day. I can understand if she had said they ran out but just cutting him off at the knees with "we don't serve it after 10:30" wasn't very polite. She finally served our drinks and we sat and watched while other diners arriving after us were served. We finally received our ham and cheese and club sandwiches after a 35 minute wait. We won't return as the menu is pretty run of the mill and the sandwiches and fries were standard fare. There are too many diners to want to repeat only fair service and food. Also, we sent an email to TN magazine with a correction about their chocolate gravy available hours.

Y'all, I'm calling it right now: this is the best barbecue in the entire United States. That smoked pork shoulder plate--tender, juicy meat, kissed with smoke for hours, edged with perfect bark, and paired with their peppery vinegar dip--had me closing my eyes with every bite like I was cheating on every other BBQ joint I've ever loved. The mayo slaw was creamy crack abd the baked beans tasted like they'd been simmering since last Thanksgiving. If you ever find yourself within 100 miles of Tompkinsville, you owe your soul a detour. Backyard BBQ isn't just a meal, it's a religious experience with a side of fries. 11/10, no notes, already planning the next pilgrimage.

We will stop here again if even close, and might just plan a trip down to get some of their BBQ!
