This public art mural overlooks East Riverside Blvd and the Colorado River. The mural is to the…read morewest of I-35 on the south side of Riverside. It depicts a skull with butterfly wings, and some mockingbirds and bluebonnets. As you know, mockingbirds are the Texas state bird, and bluebonnets are the Texas state flower. I appreciate the Texas pride in this mural. The wall this mural is painted on is retaining wall, with a residential area behind/above the mural. It's not easy to get to this mural, as it's up on a hill overlooking the roadway.

This mural reminds me of the things Texas is proud of such the hill country, the many waterways, cowboys and cowgirls, beaches (Yes! Texas does have beaches), parks and nature sites and rodeos. He said the gallery's name is a play off his name with an art emphasis. Rich shared that his gallery was the only African American art gallery in Austin, thus I was intrigued. Since we finished the Art contest judging sooner than anticipated, I popped by his art gallery also located in East Austin. RichesArt is mind blowing! The gallery feels like a full-on creative space. This is not your typical art gallery vibe with stark white walls where you cannot touch anything. This place is beaming with bright, bold colors that scream...this is art!!! The walls exude color, texture, life! There is a strong graffiti influence, mixed media, and pieces unapologetically authentic. The art gallery also serves as community hub. They host poetry slams, live jazz, a figure drawing class, art classes, and comedy shows. According to Rich, it's a creative playground for grown folks. While it was free to enter the art gallery, some of their events have an associated cost. The gallery environment is incredibly welcoming. A few folks were waiting to start a graffiti class. It appears folks come to RichesArt to connect and create. According to Rich, inclusivity is intentional and the gallery was built to reflect and celebrate culture.

Fortunately today there was a community yoga class (Swift Fit Events), plus a succulent class (East side succulents). This allowed us the opportunity to explore and enjoy the property. We brought our mother along to enjoy, and she quickly made friends. There is a lovely market filled with fresh produce, plus other local goods. Everyone was friendly, and helpful. The restrooms are very accessible, and clean! So happy to have this precious gem in Austin! Thank You

They have so many colors and materials to choose from and everything is so organized. The people who work there is always walking around offering help and suggestions so you never feel lost. They also gave us mocktails and had snacks available, which made the experience even better. Everything was really good. If you like arts and crafts, this is such a fun activity. It's very relaxing, I felt so calm while working on my piece. Time definitely goes by so fast when you're focused and creating. Just a heads up, they include different mold sizes with your reservation, but if you choose a bigger one than what's included, they do charge extra. Overall, I loved it. It's perfect for a date night or for having a fun time with a group of friends. I would definitely do it again

I kinda had no idea what to expect. I intentionally didn't read much about The Color Inside. I knew…read moretwo things: Turrell and UT. Oh, and free. FREE. We made a reservation because we wanted to go at sunset. Without a reservation, you might get in but it's first come first served. We arrived extra early because if you're not familiar with UT and all of its ongoing construction, it can be challenging to find the Art Center. We asked some friendly students to point us in the right direction and got to the exhibit right on time. We checked in with the student on duty. There's a circular waiting room to the right of the check in desk where I saw people waiting. Some were sitting on the benches, others were actually lying on the floor. Geez how long had they been waiting? I sheepishly whispered to the student receptionist that I wasn't quite sure what the deal was. She advised that we could go right in. Right in to that circular waiting room? uh, yeah. that IS the exhibit. it fits maybe 20 people comfortably. and suddenly lying on the floor seemed perfectly reasonable. So we laid out our jackets and lied on the floor (there are blankets available at the exhibit in case you are a floor-lier without a jacket). we looked up. the roof is sort of canopy-like, and white, with a big blue oval dot in the middle. there are led lights in the base of the canopy that shine upwards casting a glow on the canopy. so we're lying there. and...we're lying there. and like i said we had no idea what to expect. after a while we saw a red plane fly by and we realized that the blue oval dot was actually a hole to the sky. ok, cool. and we're lying there just looking up. and then, things started to happen. i'm not going to tell you the details of the exhibit. you have to go experience it for yourself and be wowed. i will tell you that the key to the exhibit is patience (and the ability to lie on the floor). if you are patient, you will be vastly rewarded. 5-stars vast.
