Awesome experience! I called Pat on a Wednesday. He showed up that afternoon to look at our project - excavating a crawl space and footings for an addition on a Lafayette site with very difficult access. The next day at 1PM he was there with bobcat, excavator and enormous dump truck and crew. They moved a prized Japanese maple for me for free and did a meticulous job. They worked non stop and had the footings dug by end of day Saturday. This allowed my foundation contractor to set formwork Monday and pour concrete Tuesday afternoon, just before a series of rain storms set in. We are so far ahead on this project, I can't believe it. There was a long trip for the bobcat to the dump truck and there was a guy (I kid you not) whose only job was sweeping the driveway to keep it spotless throughout the project. His crew was very polite and clean and Pat is so friendly and helpful. He even let my son sit in the bob cat for a photo. I really can't say enough about the experience. So "Dig This" I was setting out to restructure my entire backyard after almost 50 years of planting and growing some now very large trees and dense vegetation. New yard plans along with a water conservation prospective left me needing major excavation to make it happen. Pat, his son and the awesome crew from Dig This made the first step in my yard remodeling a breeze. These guys came in and downed 7 very large and a few smaller trees, several bushes and all the vegetation around and under them along with pulling up and neatly stacking hundreds of pavers, removed a retaining wall and dismantled a shed. They worked pretty much non stop for 2 days. Completely professional and masterful at their trade. They were very skillful at bringing down very large trees and were impeccably precise in excavation equipment operation. The entire crew was completely respectful in communicating with us and amongst themselves while working in our yard and also mindful and respectful of our property and of our neighbors while they maneuvered the equipment and dump trucks in our court. They left a very clean and beautifully prepped area for our new endeavor. We paid a very fair price for all the work that was completed and we're not charged a cent more than the original quote. I called Pat to get an estimate for demolishing a HUGE barn that sat right in the middle of our 1.5 acre parcel. Pat promptly came out to give me a bid for not only demo'ing the barn but also excavating the property as well. Found Dig This through Yelp, met with Pat and immediately knew all the high Yelp reviews were accurate and that we would work with him(yes, we had other bids as well). We had them remove all the old hardscape in our backyard and the crumbling retaining wall. Pat made great recommendations on improving our drainage as well. Demolition was quick and very careful of the foundation and house. He listened to us, understood what we wanted, and made great suggestions. His son and the crew built us a great new stone retaining wall, you can see the pictures of their work on Yelp, it really looks that good! The hardscape replacement is just what we wanted and looks great. His crew laid a fantastic flagstone path just where we wanted, looks so good! After the first good rain of this season, drainage worked perfectly in the yard and from all the gutter downspouts they routed to their suggested dry well, perfect. They laid conduits for spa electrical connection and gas line connection for a fire pit perfectly. His entire crew is professional, courteous, and just does a great job. Their estimate was fair, and right on. They worked fast and finished on time as estimated. Don't know what else to say, Pat knows how to run a top notch business. I wouldn't hesitate to be a reference for them, and he is the only call we'll make when we get the front yard and driveway re-done. Oh, and you can trust him on a hand shake...so rare today! I don't do reviews but feel compelled to write one after our project with Dig This. Sadly we had to decide to remove our pool after it developed some cracks that proved too expensive to repair. After reviewing/meeting with 4 companies, we chose to go with Dig This. From the initial consultation, we can immediately tell we can trust Pat and that he would do a great job. He strikes us as a master of his trade, but even more importantly, direct, honest, of great integrity and really cares about the quality of his work. He quickly assessed the job, offered many helpful insights and provided us with a fair price. Communication is another big plus with Dig This thanks to the coordination of Fadia who quickly and patiently responded to and resolved any question/concern we had to our satisfaction. Dig This went above and beyond the contract to not only remove the pool but also facilitate (for) the next phase of renovating our back yard. They cut down a big palm tree, offered to save and trim dug up concrete blocks for reclaim purpose in our upcoming landscaping project, (unfortunately, all of our concrete was not salvageable but Dig This went as far as to bring us concrete from another demo job!!), remove more bushes/raised planters that will no longer fit with the new scheme, etc. all at no extra charge. When our front lawn incurred damages from heavy equipment and soil deposits for the fill, Pat took responsibility to replace it, taking out the rest of the old lawn, bringing in new soil and top soil for us AND brought the level up to match the walkway border as it was much lower before!! His crew synchronized and moved quickly with great skills and efficiency it seemed almost effortless! Yet they are super attentive and responsive to any comment/request we had. And they always cleaned up after themselves. We were apprehensive before things started as it seems a daunting process especially given how tight our backyard is with very small access to the pool. But these guys tackled everything with the highest level of precision and efficiency. Not only are they fast/efficient/clean, they have great attitudes and are really pleasant to work with. We were amazed at how fast things evolved every day and how the whole process was completed in just 3 days as planned. And despite all the many extra things Pat generously did for us, he didn't add one more dime to the original quote. I called Pat for a somewhat small job, a french drain along the backside of my house. Pat showed up, ON TIME, and we discussed the scope of work. Pat wanted to make sure the job was done right but knew that hand digging a trench along the home could be done with less expensive labor than his crew, so he suggested that I save a few dollars and hire some labor. Upon completing the trench, Pat revisited the site and confirmed the work done was done right and confirmed the steps needed to complete the project and suggested that I simply complete the project on my own and save a few bucks. I offered to compensate him for his time and knowledge, but he refused. You don't find many people like Pat these days. He provided me with his time and knowledge and was more concerned about the project being done right than making a dime. I am looking forward to the day I have a larger project. Pat and his "Dig This" crew earned another 5 stars in our backyard this past week. We started out looking for bids to replace a large retaining wall that was failing badly. It separated the flat part of our main yard from what we refer to as "the back forty"- a sloping hillside that we rarely ventured into. This was going to be one of those dreaded house projects like foundation work...spend a bunch of money on something you need but will never see. But Pat suggested simply removing the wall and not replacing it. "But won't our yard fall down," I asked. Pat assured me that after he and his crew worked their magic, our yard would not only be stable, but much more open and like a park. Very professional crew. We had a swimming pool filled in, and the cost was totally reasonable compared to the other bid we had. We are very happy! Pat is a very nice guy, and easy to talk to. I would highly recommend them. One tip for other who are filling in their pools: the bobcat is very heavy (and it hauls so much dirt) and will be hard on anything it rolls over. You will lose all plants in its path, but he told us that ahead of time. We had a cracked concrete patio on the side of our house, and it really cracked and buckled more under the weight. Just a heads up for anyone filling in a pool. It's unavoidable, but worth it. Pat Ward and his team really worked with the Acalanes Softball program and Boosters to address our poor drainage and ratty field conditions. Despite rain delays, he stayed with our job and installed French drains to handle runoff from another field, which was quickly tested in succeeding rains. The crew leveled the infield and spread cinder mix, filled uneven areas in the outfield with top soil/sand and added grass seed. We had been searching for awhile for someone who could do site prep and retaining walls for my long-time dream of a small horse set-up at our home. I'd interviewed a few local contractors but none of them were experienced with requirements for a barn and horses; and those that did were so far out of the Bay Area they did not want the job.
