The best! I tried the giros spezial and OMG! Probably one of the top 5 meals I have had in my 55…read moreyears of my life! Not only was it delicious but the Trio dip with fresh bread was fantastic. It included tziki, and two other dips I can't describe but they were delicious! Really you need to visit because it is awesome! If I didn't live in the USA I would move here and eat this every day!!

I lived above this restaurant for six weks and ate there only once, my first night in Hamburg. I went in alone after having slept all day following an exhausting trip. I walked in, slightly disoriented because I expected something different than the nice surroundings. A waiter with an overly-tailored beard approached me in English and gruffly asked me if I wanted to eat inside or out. I apparently took a few seconds too long to decide and exasperated him. "Inside or out?" he demanded. Only because I was famished and still exhausted did I stay. I sat in a secluded corner and was ignored for fifteen minutes, then requested service from another waiter who was busy doing something behind the bar. I wasn't happy, but too tired to leave. No takeout. Great. He then felt it necessary to lecture me that I wasn't in America when I simply offered a curious comparison to the size of the coffee cup presented. He eventually lightened up and complained that I tipped him too much. (I kept getting conflicting information about tipping in Germany). The owner did come over and ask if I liked the meal. It was just okay, but I said it was very good, other customers seemed to be having a good time. This wasn't enough. He looked at me for a moment (the stare) and didn't say anything else, then turned and left. They had an inflated opinion of the restaurant and of themselves, an arrogance similar to what I encountered often in Hamburg, but nowhere else in my travels throughout Germany and Paris this past summer. A sweet young lady smiled and said goodbye as I left, as the first waiter tried to make a point of ignoring me as he dried a plate. I really wished I had had dealings with her instead of these arrogant fools. This experience was so surprising because I had just stayed a week and a half at the Hotel Kempinsky in Berlin where I experienced, with one exception, nothing but the absolute best service, most professional demeanors, and genuine smiles at all times.

There was a lot to choose from and for some reason this Greek cafe sounded good. This place did not disappoint at all. The joint is a small casual no-frills one with bench tables and a few regular booths. It's run by a mom and pops who speak no English but the menu was is in English and German. There is a small bar area with different alcohol. It was about half crowded when we dined. I had trouble deciding on lamb chops or gyro but then the Souvlaki sounded good so I went with that. I was craving some grilled meat and this charcoal grilled pork skewers is exactly what sounded good to me. I opted for the tomato salad and bread as my sides. Lo and behold, everything was so delish and seasoned perfectly. My dish came with 4 small half pork skewers, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions and a side of toasted bread in a basket. My plate was garnished with a pepperoncini and Greek kalamata olive and drizzled with olive oil and a scoop of their tasty tzatziki which was made with thick Greek yoghurt. There wasn't a huge amount of food but enough to fill me up and fix that craving. I topped off my meal with a local Hamburg beer called Astra which was a sharp tasting beer and seemed to pair well. I joked with the owner that we will be back tomorrow but don't think he understood me. This simple meal caught me off guard and it was so good that we indeed came back the next night and had the same exact dish but with an extra side of tzatziki. The owner recognized us immediately and smiled as we entered. After we ordered the same dishes he brought us some shots of Ouzo. I tried Ouzo before and did not care for it as I don't like the black licorice taste. I did not want to disappoint him so we downed it. Yamas! I've been wanting to go to Greece for some years now and this place may push me to book a flight quicker. Even though we couldn't communicate with the owner besides my bad pronunciation from Goggle Translate, he was very friendly and I thoroughly enjoyed my meals here.
