We made the walk from the Altstadt to Lutherstrasse (just over the new bridge) and found this little restaurant. The decor is pretty standard, but the place has loads of character. The menu is hand written - I'm not sure I could have read it if it was all in English, let alone with my meagre German, but our waitress spoke English and was very helpful. We decided to start off with a Flammenkuchen (an Alsatian tarte flambe - think very, very thin crust flatbread with cream, onions, meat and cheese) which was the best one we had on our trip. I opted for the asparagus special - a pound of white asparagus with hollandaise sauce, potatoes and a side of pork schnitzel. The boy had pork cutlets in a calvados sauce which came with Bratkartoffeln (fried potatoes) and salad. We both ordered a riesling with dinner and it was delightful. Both meals were excellent and this was the best price for an asparagus meal that we saw in Heidelberg, Cologne, Dusseldorf or Hamburg. The only downside to our visit was that although our server was very friendly she was not terribly attentive. However, this is kind of normal in Germany so I can't really knock them for it. Not normal in Germany: they take credit cards! Rejoice! If you're in Heidelberg I highly recommend this restaurant.

Weinheim is one of my favorite places to visit when we are in the area. Its not as touristy as…read moreHeidelberg but you can get there with the tram from Heidelberg or Mannheim easily. It has an intact medieval city center, a beautiful palace park with a great playground and walking paths through the surrounding hills. This time we came on a September afternoon with the whole family. After a walk in the park and time at the playground, we were all very hungry. There are several restaurants on the main square (Marktplatz) and one of the locals suggested stopping at Diebsloch. We sat outside under large umbrellas and had a great view of the church and the old buildings. The service was pretty good- they gave us two Ikea high chairs for the toddlers be had with us and didn't seem to mind that we stayed a while. Most of the guys got the typical Schnitzel (SchniPoSa) with fries and salad and said it was good. I had Maultaschen, with salad (a Swabian specialty - ravioli filled with ground meat and spices) and a glass of regional white wine. Both were very solid. The only complaint we had were the limited options for vegetarians- they were out of fish that day and there was only an overpriced pasta dish available. The inside is very charming and comfortable, preserving the half timbered walls and sloping rooms of the 500-year-old building. The bathrooms are up a flight of stairs. I could change my son on the little counter but the bigger boy with us had to be changed on the bathroom floor.
