On our walking tour, we stopped here to learn about a very dark time in German history, the Gray Buses that were used to pick up psychiatric patients that were systematically killed by the Nazi socialists. The memorial is inscribed with the quote "Where are you taking us?" - the traditional question of a man who was picked up by the Gekrat buses like thousands of other patients. More than 1000 Frankfurt residents with mental illness or other intellectual disabilities were killed in 1941.
You must go inside the bus which is split in half to give you an idea of what it must have felt like. The actual buses were former postbuses and had the windows painted. Hopefully, it's after the street cleaning crew comes by. In some instances, vagrants and other lowlifes use it as a urinal or worse.
It is a temporary exhibit - I'm not sure how long it will be here in Frankfurt. read more
