Tam Nguyen Temple - Really nice and tall Buddha statue

This place is not closed! It's crazy how I rely on Yelp and almost missed this wonderful…read moreopportunity. I searched in google for Buddhist temple in Indio since word of mouth people said there is an actual temple. I was very reluctant to check this place out since "Yelpers" said this place is closed. No it is not. This place used to be a motel and then it got renovated into a temple. It's a perfect place for it. The gates are nice and huge so it may look like it's closed but there is always someone there to open the gates for you. The place is huge! I was welcomed by a monk who was so welcoming. He spent at least an hour with us touring the area and explaining to me what each statue meant. He gave me some background history and introduced me to the people on site. It was definitely an experience I will never forget. I felt so lucky to have went with my gut and drove by this place. I've been going to Vietnamese temples hours away. It was ridiculous. Now that I found this temple I feel so much better since it's only a 30 min drive for me. Anyways, the temple is opened 7-7 pm. They have three masses a day. One, if you're an early bird, from 6-7 am, the 11-12 pm, and then I believe... 4-5 pm... We went to the 11-12 pm mass. And had lunch there afterwards. Food was great! We asked if we could also volunteer since this is a nonprofit place. They need a lot, a lot, a lotttt of help! Especially in the kitchen. There are a lot of things that needs to be cut (carrots, apples, pineapples, etc), and dishes to wash. Don't feel obligated! If you don't have the time to volunteer, it's okay. My husband and I didn't really have any plans for Sunday so we stayed until as long as we could (9-4 pm) to help out and pray. The donation box. A lot of places have donation boxes. This place don't. Which I feel like it should be that way. The Buddhist monk believe that you should go to the temple for your own relationship with God and not feel obligated to donate if you don't have any money. There are envelopes around where you can be slick and slip money in and give it to the monks so that no one else feels that they have to donate too. I think it's great. The money goes towards obviously, electric bills, buying food, keeping the place together. This place is so serene, spacious, and a gem in Indio. I am so lucky to land across this place and from now on come more often. I left so much happier and feeling really good about myself. Please don't hesitate to stop by this place. People are so nice and you won't regret it!
