They provide a good sampling of various types and regions (from complex Bordeaux to sakes), and everyone there is able to speak with some knowledge about any of the offerings (inc a limited selection of spirits and liqueurs as well). The manager of the shop is so well-spoken and knowledgeable about the offerings, you can't help but to wonder where he finds the time to do anything else with himself! The shop also offers a series of supper clubs in the downstairs area, and these events are terrific. We just attended a 5-course vegetarian meal with wine pairings by an up-and-coming chef who'd done time in some of London's best kitchens--and it was such a great experience. The wine was well-paired and explained, and the food was sensational. Plus the friendly ambiance and setting just made for a perfect evening. This shop just adds to the embarrassment of riches in this area, and especially on cold winter's days, I'm very grateful for its proximity to home!

The transformation is remarkable and this new store is well laid out and full of hard-to-find and specialist wines, many of which you can try using their novel Enomatics machines - self-service wine machines. You buy a top-up card and start sampling. I went in on a whim and found myself asking for a very specific NZ Riesling - and came away with a bottle of Pikes 2008 Riesling from the Clare Valley in Australia, a great companion to Vietnamese food from Namo, around the corner. There are wine tastings and events on the way.

And of course there is nothing fine about the wines on sale here. I remember once being tempted by this discount offer on an already suspiciously cheap wine - 2.69 a bottle or whatever it was. well, if you bought 4 bottles you'd get them for even cheaper. Of course I couldn't resist. And of course the wine was absolutely revolting, vile stuff I suspect it consisted of a mixture of dregs from the left over bottles after a house party. In general, their selection of wines is eccentric at best, but luckily they have a more normal range of beers. And also some spirits, so you'll be alright. The selection of food in here is not great. I'd expect them to at least do all the major Indian spices, but no. You'll find staple food items here, such as cheese, filled pasta, yoghurt, milk, orange juice etc, and some fruit and veg, but it's not particularly cheap. Yeah, unless you're desperate you're probably better off wandering down to the tiny Tesco at the petrol station another 100 meters down the road. The photo is a bit crap but I feel it reflects the quality of the shop.

That's not all, they have a huge selection of wines in their fridges, as well as beers, lagers, stout, ale and anything else created by man that has alcohol in it and can be drunk. It's not the cheapest but it's the closest to London Fields, which makes it the go to "bar" for the park when you want to drink with your mates. It also has a happy little (well actually not little at all) chap working behind the counter, who is super jolly. It must be all the booze. I'd be happy surrounded by all that tasty scrumpy. I'd also be drunk. So on my way home from a hard day a work, I'll swing by this place and grab a bottle of good stuff. It's a winner for me.

Lea & Sandeman carry a wide variety of wines from around the world but they do carry a good selection from France but also very good selection from Italy and Spain. The focus actually appear to shifting to less France and more Spain and Italy. The staff are usually very friendly, knowledgeable and service-minded, the selection is not always the super-exciting small producers but they do carry a good mix of bigger brands and smaller producers. I have been very happy to find for example Egly-Ouriet here (one of few places in the UK). What is also impressive is the in general competitive prices and sometimes one can find real bargains here so look for what they have on offer. One of my favorite wine shops in London. There were hundreds of wines to choose from, all organised by type and country of origin. The gentleman behind the counter was most sociable and was able to speak with authority when giving me advice on which of their wide selection would suit my tastes. He even promised that if I did not like the one he recommended I could bring that bottle back and swap it for something else which made me reassured and that the shop care about customer's wine experience rather than just making sales. For those who don't like wine there are beers, ales and alchopops on offer as well as spirits and mixers. Bottoms Up run promotions and special offers which are displayed in the windows and are always worth checking out if you are on your way to a party.

Right, so if you want to talk about hidden gems in London, this place should be at the top of the list. I've found loads of outrageously random Eastern European beers in here - and kvass! The selection is lager-heavy, though there are a few dark beers to be found - and kvass! Prices are very good, and the service essentially non-existent, which is fine with me. I'm guessing the lady at the counter is pretty weirded out by the random guy poring over their cheap beer selection, and she probably figures it's best to just let him be. This shop is a one-minute walk from William IV, so if you're in the area pop in here - and kvass!
