An iconic spot, part of CDMX's political and intellectual history. Che and Fidel used to meet here…read moreand it was the favorite cafe of journalists and philosophers. I first moved to CDMX in the late 70s, worked not far away, and somehow never visited before today. To find the place, just follow the aroma of roasting coffee beans. We came midweek during comida hour. It was not crowded and everyone was kind and attentive. Although I was craving plátano frito and moros y cristianos, we opted for the comida del día. They were unfortunately out of the better dishes, so the food was good Mexican fare, but not my favorite choices. The vegetable soup was excellent with a nice broth and generous portions of vegetables that maintained good consistency and flavor. The tortillas were very hot and soft. The bolillo was just okay. The agua today was jamaica. I was a little afraid of eating lettuce, but couldn't resist the next course, which was a green salad. For the main course, my husband had the milanesa de cerdo which came with mashed potato and I had flautas de papa with frijoles refritos that reminded me of rehydrated ones. The flautas were nicely crisped and topped with crema, queso fresco and lettuce. The green salsa was not spicy at all, which is always disappointing, but it had a good flavor and we finished it all. We skipped the gelatin dessert, but found the coffee to be very good. We took home a kilo of their coffee beans and a slice of pastel de elote for later. Overall a good value for the price. We just loved the vibe here and will be back soon.

This restaurant s well known for its molletes, and I had an urge to try it out. I ordered the…read moremolletes gratinados that included three separate pieces of the molletes with queso manchego. My girlfriend ordered a more common and safe platter called espagueti Alfredo. I also ordered the te manzanilla. All of our food was made to order including the manzanilla tea. The restaurant is more like an open space cafeteria and it seemed like the place was nearly full. Its a very interesting place and you can tell by some of the antique furniture and old style coffee grinder. I would bet that this restaurant was even more popular fifty years ago. Our server was very attentive even though she seemed very over-worked. She came by more than three times to make sure everything was good for us.

We visited El Maque on a Sunday morning after we finished an appointment in the area. Some friends…read morehad previously recommended it to us. We arrived at just before 9:30 am. From the moment you walk in, a wonderful buttery and sugary smell of baking envelopes you. There is a bakery workstation at the entry so you can see the pastries and sweet breads being made by hand. There are several indoor dining rooms, outdoor terraces, a greenhouse area, and a patio. The atmosphere is lovely. It feels completely peaceful and well tended. The service is wonderful. The waitresses wear retro ruffled and starched uniforms. They were very attentive. The foot was completely fresh, simple, yet beautifully prepared. They had a special chipotle chilaquiles that were delicious. The omelette was delicious as well. Not in a Julia Childs kind of way. More of in a traditional Mexican kind of way. The baskets of pan dulces that they brought for us were fresh and delicious. The orange and mandarin juice tasted like it had been squeezed on the spot. The teas were wonderful. Overall, a completely satisfying breakfast experience. We got there at 9:30 am on a Sunday and the place was half empty and we were seated immediately. by 10am, the last tables were filling up and after that point I'm sure there was a wait. I would highly recommend this restaurant. I'm already looking forward to going back.
