I joined the Dexter Wellness Center as soon as they opened their doors. I had previously been a member of the Chelsea Wellness Center when we lived in Chelsea. I have tried MIGHTILY to like the center in Dexter. Since our move to Dexter it is much easier to work out in town, rather than drive back to Chelsea. However, the Dexter Wellness Center is a HUGE disappointment. I am a former competitive swimmer at the national level and former coach and aquatics professional, so I really need a pool. That is my primary reason for choosing any gym. However, the Dexter Wellness Center over programs their pool. Fitness classes are scheduled in the lap pool throughout the day...mornings, afternoons and evenings. It is impossible to find any amount of time (I need at least 2 hours.) when the lap pool is available for a decent workout. I prefer to swim in the afternoons. This didn't work, because there was a fitness class (complete with extremely loud music and a bellowing instructor) on many afternoons, or children's swimming classes (in the warm pool with another bellowing instructor), or gym and swim, etc. I tried swimming in the evenings. More classes. Even if there are no scheduled classes, the lanes fill up with water walkers and dog paddlers, who refuse to share their lane. I ended up trying to get up and swim at 5:15AM, which would work, but after a lifetime of waking up before dawn for swim practice, I really didn't have it in me to continue that routine in my 60s. So. I have ended up driving into the Chelsea Wellness Center to swim and work out. I wish all of the problems with the DWC ended with the pool. Unfortunately, they do not. The entire building is awkwardly designed, with little natural light (Except the pool area). When using the aerobic machines there is nothing to look at, other than the little televisions attached to every machine. It's downright depressing. Another downside: The fitness personnel sit at a desk where they can't even see anyone working out on the aerobics equipment. (Not that any of them would bother to get off their butts to see if anyone needed any help, anyway) They spend their working hours chatting among themselves, or hanging out in the office.) The last insult...They offer a "discount" for Senior Citizens, which is a few bucks. Literally. As expensive as this place is, to offer those living on a fixed income a break of only a few dollars, is an insult. I have brought these issues up a number of times with management. The response I got was surly and dismissive. Seriously. If you're a swimmer drive to Chelsea. If you like to work out in a welcoming, positive environment with helpful trainers, drive to Chelsea. I do. read more
