A week ago, my boyfriend took his truck to Next Generation Autoworks. This was not his first visit,…read morenor the first time he had went there related to a failed inspection. I was not present when he initially brought the vehicle in; however, he was informed that the cost to repair a manifold issue on the passenger side would be around $800(I wasn't there, so I didn't get the actual quote amount). Naturally, this was upsetting, as the vehicle had failed inspection, and he was under a limited timeframe to complete the repairs. Despite his frustration, he explained to Alison at the front desk that he would return the truck for the repair and reinspection. An appointment was scheduled for April 6.
On April 6, he called to check on the status of the repair and was told that the cost would be higher than originally quoted. He was also informed that they could not provide a revised estimate because they were unsure how much additional work might be required. This understandably caused significant frustration. His concern was not simply that the vehicle had failed inspection, but that he now had less than two weeks to complete the required repairs, no clear estimate of cost, and the impression that the shop was reluctant to proceed with the repair due to uncertainty about the outcome.
Given these circumstances, it is reasonable that anyone would be upset. It is concerning that a business would provide an initial quote, request that a vehicle be brought in for repair, and then later state that the quote was incorrect while being unable to provide any revised estimate. Compounding this issue is the fact that the customer is under a strict deadline due to an inspection rejection sticker. Alison indicated that the mechanic who failed the inspection for the manifold issue did not have a clear understanding of the underlying problem, but only enough information to justify failing the inspection. If that was the case, it is unclear why this was not communicated to my boyfriend in that manner. Alison could have simply explained that the vehicle failed due to a manifold-related issue, but that an accurate quote could not be provided at that time because the appropriate mechanic was not available. She could have advised him to return at a later time for a proper estimate or suggested taking the vehicle to another repair facility. Notably, alternative repair locations were mentioned after the fact, which raises the question of why this information was not provided upfront.
While at the shop, my boyfriend made an inappropriate comment expressing how frustrated he felt about the situation. This comment was taken as a threat, which was not his intent. He immediately clarified that he was not making a threat, but rather expressing his anger in the moment. At that point, I suggested that we retrieve the keys and leave, as the situation was escalating rather than improving.
Shortly after we left, a technician contacted my boyfriend and stated that he was accused of threatening Alison. Again, my boyfriend explained that this was not the case. Nevertheless, he was informed that he was no longer welcome at the shop. As a result, he is now banned from the same business that failed his inspection, misquoted the repair cost, and was scheduled to perform the reinspection.
While I do not expect to hear from the owners of this business, I felt it was important to share our experience. I acknowledge that my boyfriend could have handled his frustration more appropriately, as it is always best to treat others with respect. However, I do not believe Next Generation Autoworks demonstrated the same consideration toward him. They failed his inspection, advised that the issue could be repaired, scheduled an appointment, and then later stated that the appropriate mechanic was not available and that they could not determine the repair or cost. As a result, a full week was lost with no solution offered, no empathy shown, and ultimately a ban from the shop instead of a reasonable attempt to resolve the situation.
