TLDR: Care is good, but the doctor has terrible bedside manner and makes you come in for unnecessary appointments. --------------- I brought my cat here for a standard post-adoption exam. The technicians and front desk staff were very nice, but the doctor was dismissive and seemed annoyed when I had questions about my cat's care. What really got me was that he flipped out over her weight (half a pound over the standard) and made me feel stupid for how I was feeding her. He insisted on me bringing her back in a month later to weigh her. I only consented because she needed follow-up shots and a nail trim, so I had to come back anyway. When I came in, they refused to let me come back to the room to observe how they trimmed her nails, making me stay in my car. The reason they gave was that the doctor wanted to close early and my appointment was preventing that (my appointment was two hours before the end of business) - there was no COVID related reason to make me stay out. The doctor was displeased that my cat hadn't lost enough weight to satisfy him and made his tech run messages between us about how I adjusted her food, which was crazy because it was freezing out, and she had no coat on. He then made a follow up appointment for another weigh-in without my consent. I had it at that point, found another vet, and canceled my appointment with him. my cat was checked in for vitals and I was informed that I would be notified of the vitals meanwhile my cat was taken back to a cage and was left for 3 hours with no vitals taken while other pets were being seen and immediate vital information given to the owners I don't recommend this place read more

I wanted to do a spay on my 3 year old bitch after an accidental breeding took place with an immature, not health tested male. My truck broke down a few days before the spay appointment and the paperwork they had sent me prior to the appointment was in my truck so the day of the spay I went in and I had to fill out the paperwork then. It was my fault that I hadn't gotten to the paperwork even though my truck had broken down and I had left the packet of info in the truck. The paperwork included a consent to treat for fleas and ticks that I would not agree to. My dogs and cats have had several bad reactions using flea and tick treatments and I noted that I give Adam's plus flea and tick baths every month but this was not good enough to move forward with the spay. I brought my bitch for a spay to prevent a possible pregnancy- not to be treated for fleas/ticks. I can understand their position but it seems like an extreme reason to not move forward with the spay given the situation- I was already willing to pay an additional $240 for the "complication of a possible pregnancy" which I also thought was pretty excessive considering they said that it wasn't any riskier than a normal spay. I am disappointed in this hospital and they sent a follow up letter saying that I was never allowed to bring any of my animals there for treatment in the future- no problem there I guess. Horrible and unethical. Previous to taking our two dogs to Dewitt, we talked to the office and they assured us- among other things- that they would have ample availability, including weekend appointments. Yet when our dog has an issue that needs to be seen quickly, they can't be seen for weeks... Another issue is that we have been told that "Dr. Wilcox will call you back" regarding treatment options for ongoing issues. We have yet to have dr. Wilcox call us back. Today, my wife talked to the office and they had a disagreement over treatment and Dr. Wilcox and the office decided not to treat our dog- who clearly has a UTI- tomorrow and to drop us as clients because of this. Basically, they refused to treat an animal because they don't like that there was a disagreement. Clearly, they could have seen the dog and then decided to part ways with us. Instead, they made the decision to let the dog suffer. Shame on you. Don't go there. read more

I had my dog spayed here and it was a nightmare. Her incision was raised and swollen, sloppy, and infected almost immediately and required an urgent care visit because she was in so much pain from the infection. I would never recommend this place. read more

We have used Dr Wilcox and Dewitt Animal Hospital for years. Our two dogs get treatment here and we often board them here as well. The staff is great! They treat our dogs as if they were theirs and the dogs loving to come here. Dr. Wilcox is very cautious in his treatment and will suggest tests if he feels something is in need of further diagnosis but is also leaves the decision up to me as to whether we do them or not. I've never once felt pressured or like I was a bad owner for deciding not to do testing. Dr Wilcox will discuss pros and cons of shots, treatment and tests with you, all you have to do is ask. When our young terrier was diagnosed with Lyme at the Emergency vet, Dr. Wilcox recommended the qualitative test to determine "how positive" he was as the treatment with 30 days of doxycline is very hard on the dog's system. The test is expensive but we felt worth it to determine the extent of the disease. Unfortunately his Lyme level was very high so he got treated and is now as Lyme levels as low as they will ever be for a dog who has been infected. The DAH also serves as the shelter for the City of Syracuse and adopts out dogs that go unclaimed. They work very hard in this effort and if the receptionist was on Facebook, she was likely updating their adoption page while waiting for the paperwork to come back to her for those waiting. read more

Terrible vet and assistants. First time i took my dog there to get him neutered he came back with kennel cough and a rash. Then this past christmas they told me that my dog ate something bad and that's all that was wrong with him and said he would be over it in a few days. A few days later we had to take him to the emergency clinic and turns out his body was shutting down on him because he had diabetes. Had to put him to sleep. If it was caught earlier probably would be different. Will never go here again, and I will never recommend it to anyone else. read more

Last week, we found a dog and after spending a day and half with her, she was surrendered to the Dewitt Animal Hospital a week ago, as we suspected she might have had some health issues in the hopes that they would be able to help her in the mean time while we searched for her owner and while we worked on the process of legally adopting her. She was an older Rottweiler mix, who was a sweet as pie, but scared when we found her, but after 10 mins she was nothing but tail wags and kisses. We called and checked on her almost every day and spoke to them this morning and went to turn in her adoption application at noon today. From 8:30 AM to when we got to them at noon, we found out that she was put down an hour after we spoke to them this morning. Without any warning or indication that they would. Every time we spoke to them this week, they told us that she was not coming out of her kennel and was getting aggressive, which honestly, how would you feel if you were in this strange place where no one understood how scared you were. They knew she had people who were working on getting her out, and we were told that if she didn't pass her first test that they would keep her a few more days to see if she would pass another one. We were told that she had until the end of this week. But despite all of that, she was put down today. We tried to get into seeing her and even just sitting outside her kennel, but were denied because we had to go through the proper channels. We tried everything to get her out and thought that we were doing the right thing and putting her in a place that she would be safe and looked after, but that didn't happen. She was a sweet dog that for the time that we had her loved nothing more that jumping up on the couch and just wanted love. She was scared and no one at the hospital ended up being on her side or advocating for her will to live. I am so broken and lost all hope in the system that was supposed to care for her. Unlike so many dogs, she had people that fought for her, and nothing. As per the shelter, they are the only ones in Syracuse that takes in surrendered dogs and they are limited on space. I have lost all trust in this place. We were told she had more time, but as per the person I spoke to on the phone after she was put down, she was supposed to be put on the list this weekend but they were too busy and she was put on the list today and died today. I don't know what this post will do, but if nothing, it might spread awareness to what happens to the dogs that we find and surrender. I hope that this does not happen to other dogs in the future. I am so broken and I hope that this sweet soul is at peace. I have now pulled out all my current pets form ever returning to this place, and will be going elsewhere for all my vet care. Which is for the best, since as many posts suggested before, the doctor here doesn't seem like he cares about his patients. I've seen more of his back than his face in all of our visits with them in the past. Just be aware of what happens here, and think before you act. read more

The pricing for services such as spay/neutering is significantly less than some of the other locations in the area. That seems to be all DeWitt Animal Hospital has that makes it remotely worth coming back to. The receptionist asks about whether or not we want shots and meds that are unnecessary and gives us a look like we are bad owners for choosing not to accept those services. The vet is also very uncaring. We take our pets in for their shots and he puts off the feel like it's little more than a business to him. I have been going back for a couple years now and everything continues to be the same. Will be bringing my pets elsewhere in future. read more

The ABSOLUTE WORST vets office I have ever experienced. They tried to overcharge me $300 and trick and convince me they were services my dog "had to have." and then when I made them remove those charges for things my dog didn't need at all (I brought him in for one specific problem), they still sold me a medicine that my dog did not need for his problem we brought him there for. They explained it as a necessary charge to help his condition so I paid it, and then come to find out when I got home it was just OVERPRICED flea and tick treatment which he DOES NOT NEED because he wears a flea and tick collar and it's winter time and it has nothing to do with the problem they were supposed to be treating. As a person who works hard for every cent they have, it is so disheartening, especially during the holiday season to see a business that would commit highway robbery on people and lie about the medications that their dog needs. Now my hard earned money went out the window over medicine my dog never needed. Very slimy. Bring your dog here if you want to be robbed. read more

This is my usual clinic and my cat had a potential exposure to a bat that was found dead in our apartment. Each time I called, I was told to contact someone else. The first time, I was told to contact a local emergency clinic that doesn't even carry the rabies vaccine (they told me I need to talk to my usual vet). The next time I called to make an appointment for a rabies booster shot, to which they said they would look into it and call me back. When they called me back, Nicole advised me they were fully booked for the next couple of days and told me to contact the ADC which will help me find me an appointment. Sounds great, but how do I contact them? Nicole told me just to google it and I can find the number that way. I had to ask what the ADC stood for because a cursory Google search returns: Art Director's Club, Arkansas Department of Corrections, Analog-to-Digial Converter, etc. Nicole advised me it stands for Animal Diagnostic Clinic. OK, that search only returns results for a clinic in Dallas, Texas. I believe they meant Animal Diagnostic Center through Cornell University, but they were incapable of providing even that essential information. The whole experience was unprofessional from the way they gave me next to no information and pushed me off the call with "OK have a nice day," to the condescending tone they employed. The County gave me better advice about what to do with the dead bat and my cat, advising me to quarantine my cat and get him a booster shot. Not once did this clinic talk me through what I should do. It's highly unlikely that my cat has rabies, but there is a potentially deadly exposure, and it is reprehensible that they should treat such a situation with this egregious neglect and insincerity. read more

Dewitt Animal Hospital is the worst vet ever their hours are posted open till 4 PM on Saturdays I bring my sick dog there at 12:40 and they turned me away because the vet wants to leave at 1 o'clock. Dr Wilcox and his staff are Great with my animals and have been my vet for almost 20 years. The office is clean, the staff are friendly and knowledgeable and Dr Wilcox is great with my Dogs and Cats. My dogs have all been happy to come here. Anyone that wants a caring Vet and staff should be bringing their pets here for quality care. No, I don't live in Cali I live in Liverpool. read more
