As soon as you know you're traveling to Madrid, BOOK A TOUR WITH DEVOUR MADRID! I first learned about Devour Madrid while reading about places to stay in Madrid on the Spanish Sabores web site (https://tinyurl.com/s-sabores). About a quarter of the way down the web page was an Insider's Tip highly recommending Devour Madrid. Then, quite coincidentally, I was watching CBS Sunday Morning the next day, and they ran a story about a tapas bar crawl through Madrid featuring - you guessed it - Devour Madrid (https://tinyurl.com/madrid-tapas). With the planets aligned, I booked myself and two friends into the Tapas Like a Local tour for our first night in Madrid. Our evening of tapas deliciousness at Calle de Arenal 11, where we met Joy, our fabulous and incredibly personable tour guide. The tour groups are small - no more than ten - which gave us the opportunity to get to know the others in the group while walking between venues and while enjoying tapas and drinks. Foodies are never at a loss for conversation when hanging out with other foodies, comparing notes and trading stories about foodie adventures while traveling and back home, making our tasting experience that much more enjoyable. We hit four tapas bars during our 2.5 hour walking tour, starting at Casa Labra, where we enjoyed an incredible codfish croquette that was nothing like what I expected - it was perfectly smooth and creamy inside, with the codfish flavor coming through but not overpowering, balanced nicely by the hot and crisp outer coating. One of my buddies is not a big fish fan and even he admitted that it was quite delicious! To go along with the croquette was a glass of vermouth en grifo (on tap), just sweet enough, a nice aperitif to start the evening with. The tour continued on to Ópalo, where our host taught us the art of the pour, with several of us trying our hand at pouring a caña of beer with just the right amount of foam. We also had a wonderful tapa consisting of a fried quail egg with potatoes and crumbly pork sausage. Not only was it beautifully presented, it was, by far, the best bite of our entire trip to Spain and Portugal. I was quite excited about our next stop, as my favorite tapa is gambas al ajillo - shrimp served in a sizzling garlic and chili oil. We went to La Casa del Abuelo, the small tapas bar that originated this dish over a century ago, so it was a real treat to see the small kitchen right in the front of the restaurant turn out dish after dish of this bubbling and delectable dish. Don't let that dish out of your sight until you sop up the garlic and chili oil with some of their crusty fresh bread! The wine served came from La Casa del Abuelo's own vineyards, with three to choose from, depending on your taste. (My recommendation for the entire evening: just have whatever Joy recommends - she knows what pairs best with each bite!) Finally, our last stop was Casa Toni, where we all sat down and spent a good amount of time enjoying some excellent chorizo that had a great texture and spicy kick, fried calamari, patatas bravas, and a thinly sliced fried eggplant drizzled with honey - all hot off the grill, all quite delicious. As you can no doubt tell by now, the amount of food provided on this tour is quite generous, more than enough for dinner. Again, some more to drink to go along with this bounty of food and great conversation with new friends. While at Casa Toni, Joy took the time to ask each of us about what kinds of food we wanted to experience during the rest of our time in Madrid, and her recommendations were spot-on. She also provided us with an Insider's Guide listing numerous food options, local attractions, and shopping areas - and walking along the streets on Calles Preciados, Fuencarral, and Serrano helped us discover even more of Madrid's hidden gems. I really can't recommend a better thing to do on your first night in Madrid than taking the walk over to that doorway at Calle de Arenal 11 and totally immersing yourself in Spain's tapas culture while in expert hands. Finally, "muchas gracias" to Joy for starting off our Iberian adventure on such a high note and for giving us what was truly an extra-special and unforgettable evening.

Seriously, do this tour. We spent a month in Madrid and learned more on this tour than any other visit to museum, site, etc could've taught us. Debbie, our awesome guide, led us to the best places and answered every question imaginable. Oh yeah, she was also the guide on Bizarre Foods Madrid. Brilliant! Check that episode out. If you want to get a real flavor of the city, learn how to properly order tapas, eat gambas, and order dobles, do this tour. We loved it so much, we did the Seville version. Thank you, Devour!

Oliver did a fantastic job showing us all the little spots in Madrid! I loved the food. Left full and we got to experience Madrid in a unique way. We participated in the Morning Breakfast and Lunch tour. I enjoyed all the different flavors of food and drink. They were very accommodating to one of our friends who was vegetarian and pregnant :). Thank you

I would give this tour a 5/5 but I am giving it a 4/5 due to the pricing, it should definitely be a lower price. If I'm not mistaking it was €89 for the tour which was about $103 USD. Everything we had was delicious, our guide Margit was very funny and I love the passion she has for Madrid and their food!

Just got back from the most fantastic tapas tour hosted by Oliver!! This is a must do when you're in Madrid! Super knowledgeable guide (Oliver), great company, and food/drink to die for! This all happened during La Pradera de San Isidro...so lucky. Seriously had the best time ever!!!

I would highly recommend this food tour! Pricey but 100 percent worth it. Try to go towards the beginning of your trip because the information and restaurant recommendations will be helpful for the reminder of your stay in Madrid.

OMGGGGGG YOU GUYS FELIX IS AWESOME!!…read more First off, do NOT go on this tour if you don't enjoy or want to learn about the fascinating history of Madrid. And by history, I mean, Felix goes all the way back to 200BC when the Romans conquered the Iberian Peninsula, LOL. But if you want to get a better sense of Madrid (and Spain) and how it came to be and what you're looking at, then book this tour! My husband LOVED it and he does not often gush about people or things. I was also amazed that he said he prefers the smaller groups, which is exactly what I wanted/needed. I didn't want to be attracting a ton of attention as a horde of tourists, nor strain to hear at the back of a giant crowd. Second, be prepared to walk...a LOT. I can't remember how long the tour is advertised as (I was looking at so many sites, they all blended together), but it was probably almost 3 hours, but I'm sure if we'd told him to cut it shorter he would've. He is passionate about his work, about Madrid, about Spain, its people and its history and his love shows. We didn't walk the entire time because he does a broad overview of the Spanish timeline of who controls what before starting. But just be aware of the weather--it was early June and it was mostly pleasant when we met him at 11am, but the sun quickly got more uncomfortable as time went on, so wear sunscreen and good shoes and bring a water bottle (he'll even show you where to fill it up along the way). We didn't necessarily hit all the sites on the tour description because I think he kind of tailored it to us. We met at Puerta del Sol, strolled down Calle del Arenal to the Opera House, walked thru the Plaza de Oriente to the Royal Palace, over to Plaza de Espana, then to Templo de Debod, and the lookout over the city, over to the main Palace entrance and Almudena Cathedral and the ancient Moorish wall. We wrapped up in Plaza de la Villa where we tipped him and said goodbye (you'll have to bring cash). I noticed he skipped Plaza Mayor and Mercado de San Miguel, which was fine by us because we'd already seen them and I imagine it would've been packed with tourists and pickpockets :) Don't know if you can request Felix, but I know he does the Essential Madrid tour (that's the one we booked). Hope you can get him! ***Edit: so to get Felix, select the tour you want and then look to the right of the name of the tour and it lists which guide is leading the selected tour. Felix is named as "Under My Umbrella Tours."

This was a tour I did not expect much because it was FREE !…read more Made a free online reservation before leaving for Madrid for our group of 4 and initially did not expect much because it was a no cost tour. Upon arrival to the Opera metro station, our guide: Rodrigo was there half hour early with his bright red Strawberry Tour umbrella. A lot of people stopped by and inquired about the tour because the umbrella said "gratis". Rodrigo greeted us with humor and enthusiasm - had us sign in and took a group photo of us all. He asked each tour participant if they had any allergies or dislikes. Rodrigo really showed he cared about our experience before we took off tapas eating! There were 11 of us who were in the group and all were accommodated perfectly at all the businesses. Sure enough, our first tapas stop was within easy walking distance from the metro station. Rodrigo explained before stepping into the business of how things will go, how food will be paid, what is served, specialties of the house, etc... All 4 stops were just amazing. At each stop, you can decide what you want to eat with your beverage of choice. He also will share the common tapas items (olives, nuts, chips, etc)... Cost was about 5€ per person at each place. We ended up at a final place: cider tasting event where we had to pour the cider from above your head to your cup near your knees. The cider is a rough, rustic apple fermented drink that is bad tasting from the bottle, but when poured at a height, the air mixes with the beverage and tastes a bit better. Very low alcohol in the hard cider.... We paid Rodrigo what we thought the tour was worth at the end of the tour - about 10€ per person = 40€ was our tip to Rodrigo. An excellent event that I highly recommend - especially those who are unsure of what to expect or pay a large amount to an unknown tour operator. You pay only what you think it's worth to you! A very good business model indeed!

Our goal was to stay in Lisbon one week, Madrid for one week, and then look for day trips outside of enjoying the city areas. I had spoken with several tour groups but they focus primarily either for Portugal or Spain. Usually not both. I chose Letango for the main reason that they could develop an itinerary along with scheduling drivers. I knew that with the grandparents traveling by bus or train would be harder on them with the extra walking involved. Carlos did a great job of planning the entire itinerary. He planned 2 walking tours in Lisbon, 2 day trips out of Lisbon (Sintra and Evora), 2 walking tours of Madrid, a tapas tour in Madrid, 2 days trips from Madrid (Segovia/Avilla, and Toledo), a Flamenco show, and a cooking class. That allowed our family to focus on the culture and the trip versus focusing on the logistics. All of the tour guides provided were courteous and helpful. They all recognized the wide range areas and adapted speaking points, walking pace, or in answering questions to all of us. They were also flexible when our whims caused us to stay in one place longer or ask about stopping at a specific location. I hope to travel back to those countries and will be looking to work with Letango again.
