I was in a complete state of shock, the dog was barking, and I didn't have the slightest idea how the process worked. Mr. Snowden was wonderful with me! It was Friday night and I caught him out at dinner. He took my call and was so kind and gentle on the phone even though I was clearly giving him attitude for eating dinner when my mom needed to picked up. He spoke to my dad and and was so understanding. I waffled back and forth whether to use a different company because I thought the price was too low (I was in shock, please understand). Mr. Snowden never seemed annoyed or frustrated with me. He remained polite and empathetic everyt time I called him to check when they were going to pick up my mom (minutes felt like hours - in all, it took them 2.5 hours to arrive). When the two gentlemen arrived to pick up my mom, they were very respectful, especially a young man named Chambers. Two days later, my dad, sister and I went to the funeral home to meet him. Mr. Snowden had such warm and sincere energy he treated us all with the utmost respect. We were just having her cremated and having a few Death Certificates made, he never tried to upsell us on anything. They had her remains, Death Certificates and all her paperwork ready by Wednesday that week, and they included a beautiful plaque. The whole process cost half what one funeral home wanted. I highly recommend Snowden Funeral Home. Mr. Snowden, thank you so much for treating my mom, and my entire family with such care and respect.

It is not easy making this review and I am not one to critic a place of business, but I feel I…read moreshould share my experience with Snowden Funeral Home for families that are, unfortunately, looking for a funeral home for their lost loved one(s). To start off, initially when meeting the staff, they were very welcoming. Mr. Dooms is very good at what he does and seems very sympathetic; at least before you sign off on that piece of paper agreeing to the costs for services, which is very expensive by the way... Business is business, and I can understand that. My issue is not with pricing or the cost but with the actual service my family received. To say the least, the "makeup artist" did a horrific job. After confronting Mr. Dooms and the makeup artist about our issues, they were extremely defensive, unapologetic and quite rude. This was very shocking since they had been so nice previously. This resulted in having a closed casket ceremony in which we absolutely did not want. This was completely amateur and unacceptable. There isn't much we can do now but I want to share our experience with anyone looking for a funeral home. This is a horrible choice for your family. They made an already horrible moment even worse. It is all about the money for them. They should be ashamed of themselves.

I end up with this funeral because of their service. They not cheap but well worth it. The place is clean and all of their stuff are super friendly and supportive. My family has used Pumphreys before for my paternal grandparents and extended family members. So, when my maternal grandmother recently passed, they were the ones I reached out to. It was late at night and the answering service took my message. The funeral director on call that night called me back right away and expressed her condolences. Shelby helped me sort out the initial steps that night and made the arrangements to have my grandmother picked up from the nursing home. She spent a lot of time on the phone with me and helped ease me into all the necessary steps to prepare for meeting with another funeral director in person the next morning. My mother and I met with Eric Scerbo the next morning at the Rockville location. He was very kind and thoughtful. Gave us a relaxed atmosphere to make the decisions we thought best for my grandmother. Eric took care of all the details and coordinated with the cemetery. The day of the service, they had everything setup as expected. Eric was able to read my subtle cues on moving things along for the small and short service. Very thankful for Eric and the rest of the staff at Pumphreys for their efforts during a difficult time.

Examine the prepaid contract if they insist on getting the additional $1,000.00 well pay them for what they have done and have your love one picked up from Hortons by the new funeral home and taken to the other funeral home that will respect you get a refund from Hortons and this part is "important" get the new funeral home to order your casket. Remember "You" are in charge of your deceased family member not the funeral home. It's totally unnecessary to rip off family members handling the arrangements for an additional 1,000.00 pocket money for the funeral home to handle your loved ones after prearrangements has already been made and "paid for". Also if the removal person shows up to your residence to remove your loved one dressed inappropriately with a hoodie on and casual baggy pants like he's going to a ball game "as a representative of the funeral home" send him away call the funeral Home or another funeral home and "demand" someone that will respect your home and your family that will show up dressed appropriately with at least dress slacks and a decent shirt casual or dress shoes and don't accept them requesting your help to remove your loved one from your residence they should come prepared with two people remember you're paying for this proper service and you tell the funeral home what time to come to your residence to pick up your loved one if you're waiting for other family members to come to your home before your love one is removed from your residence generally they come automatically within 90 minutes but if you need more time let them know when you call to notify them of the passing of your loved one. .

The only thing that was a issue for me was that when first sitting down to meet with someone a piece of paper was just sat in front of my face with no real directions or questions being asked to what I would like to see. If you are helping someone with planning while they are grieving or suffered a loss it is very confusing to just sit down and look at a paper with no real guidance or direction. The other issue I had was we paid for a service and it wasn't provided in the time that we previously discussed. Other than that the workers are very respectful upbeat and polite. A little on the pricey side but still decent.

Forrest had mentioned that he knew about it but had not actually ever stopped by to explore the grounds. He and I enjoy visiting old historic sites which include these kinds of establishments. This is a gem that is clearly not frequented. When we rolled up, the welcoming sign says 'The church that named Bethesda'. OK, you learn something every day! Cool. Obviously, this place is extremely old if the city is named after this place. The church is still active and service is at 11am. I do not know what denomination it is currently, but the old decrepit cemetery next to it is Presbyterian and what I believe it was established at its founding. The grounds themselves are well-maintained. The road that leads up to the church limits to one car on the road. Good luck if you're trying to pass someone because there simply is no room to move around them. We discovered that really quickly when we parked off to the side, and someone from the church came up to my car to investigate who were these people on the premises? We talked to them and they were pleasantly surprised to see the place had piqued out interest. We didn't have the opportunity to go inside the church, but we did take some photos of the outside and read a couple of plaques talking about the old building. If you're into history and a person who enjoys old architecture - this is worth seeing when in the area.

If you, however, wish to have a more seamless experience with a company that is organized enough to not make it your problem, then DO NOT consider Gate of Heaven cemetery. I have had a very bad experience working with Gate of Heaven Cemetery. During a time that is already stressful intertwined with so many other emotions, the staff has only added to our sense of helplessness and stress. I would strongly recommend looking into operational changes to allow for better organization and efficiency from the customer's perspective. I have many many family members buried and entombed at the Gate of Heaven. We had plots pre-paid, and it has still been stressful. The staff, though polite and professional in their words, are unable to really be organized and efficient. Payments were not charged, things held up, probably sitting in a folder somewhere. While they will coordinate with your funeral home just fine, I think it best that they do not have any interaction with their customers. Leave that to the professionals at the funeral homes who are able to provide their customers the understanding and support that is needed at these difficult times.
