2.5 hrs away from Daytona and well worth it! We came at 1000 hrs on a Wednesday and dove until 1630 hrs. Had a wonderful time diving the "den". Dreamland like experience in the cave, serene and tranquil. Impressive amount of underwater space as it is shaped like an upside down mushroom. Swimming under the mushroom cap means using your training and putting your hand up as you ascend... or bumping your head for a reminder of your training :-) but only once. All dangerous areas marked off and or fenced off under water to keep the knuckleheads breathing. The pictures you see are views down into the water some 30+ feet. Clarity is wonderful and the environment is really that blue. Bottom is a little over 50 ft in the trenches. There are underwater decks marked with buoys that are used by various schools that use the facility for their open water dives. Quite a few fish, some fairly large, swim around and get fed by the staff so they are curious and up close. As grass hoppers and crickets fall through the big hole in the cave ceiling, the fish will jump and grab them. Fun to watch. The big catfish that lives there lets you pet him we are told but he is not out during the sunshine part of the day. There are two dive cats that think they are dogs and are prone to swimming. The kitten smells like sunshine. Not crazy about cats but dog-cats are cool. Very much a family affair as this is a no-drinking environment, no cussing environment. The "F" word there is "Fun". Many young people visit during the day snorkeling. Heard a good number of eastern european accents which indicates the place is "on the map". The staff is really friendly accommodating, and has some great stories (as him about diving Egypt). Wife was nervous about getting under water after not diving for several years and with the staff's patient explanation of everything as well as jovial nature, she was comfortable and as at home as if we were in a pool. We rented gear there, brand new Sherwood vest with integrated weights, new Sherwood octopus rigs. Wet suits in good shape. New masks. (yes lost mine, needed rental). Had a great time, will be back next year. Recommendations: Get there early and have the place to yourself for a while on the week day. Bring the kids, they rent mask/fins/snorkel for the snorkelers. Last dive enters the cave before 1630. Think real hard about diving two tanks of air and plan on that kind of time below. The cave itself is dark other than the little area where the sun shines through. Little picnic area provides a place to leave your belongings, nothing expensive, & a place to eat when you need a rest from the adventure. Great first trip to Devil's Den! Was a little skeptical at first, but felt comfortable once we got there. We were slightly concerned when the waiver we signed said there could be falling rocks otherwise we were fine. Signed the waiver, paid for admission $16, and my friend paid for fins $4. They have picnic tables to leave your towels. They have bathrooms, changing room, and shower available. They also have plenty of picnic areas, a pool, camping, a farm area, a nice pond with a bridge, and Devil's Den itself. The water was pretty cold to start, but got better once swimming around. The Den itself is mesmerizing. It's a really cool place to snorkel and I bet an even cooler place to scuba dive. We had a bunch of divers under us while snorkeling. We saw the turtle while snorkeling, fish, and clear water. I loved how the sun rays peaked into the den from above. This is a great place to spend the day or just come spend 2hrs to snorkel in passing. We planned it as the wrap up to our Florida trip on our way back to GA. We had ample time to snorkel. Crowds were consistent but not too bad. They don't allow you to bring flotation devices or stand on the platform for extended periods. So make sure you're a decent enough swimmer before visiting. What an amazing experience! If you live in Florida please take advantage of having this beautiful place right here in our state. If you're from anywhere else and are in town, it is definitely worth the trip. We drove up from Fort Lauderdale on the Sunday before Independence Day. We are arrived at about 10 AM and there was already a two hour wait. We were lucky enough to cool off in their dive pool for a while and eat some lunch while we waited. They have very pretty grounds that you can walk around while you wait and take photos. Before entering the den you must rent or bring your own snorkel gear and flippers. I would recommend bringing a go pro or waterproof camera because it is really a sight to see. There are no lockers for your belongings so keep that in mind. The water is very cold even in the hot summer months so while a bathing suit is just fine you may want to wear a rash guard to keep you a bit warmer. We really enjoyed it, but it was very crowded down there although they limit the amount of snorkelers that can be in the den, they do not limit the amount of divers. I would recommend going extremely early or going on a week day so you avoid the huge crowd. However if you can only go on a busy day it is better than not going at all. We drove 2 hours to make it there with our kids on a Wednesday at 1pm, for them to tell us that they were at full capacity for the day. Barely anyone there too. I asked the guy to at least allow me to take a 3 seconds picture of the cave for my kids to see it and they refused to allow me to do so. Although I explained to them we drove 2 hours to get there. Devil's Den was a nice one day affair. I actually had rented the cabin here for 3 days with another family. The cabin was split in 2 so it houses us together and the cabins, while not very clean, were cool and fun. The inside has a vaulted ceiling and loft with spiral staircase up to two twin beds. Full bed downstairs. Very Small kitchen with minimal supplies. A few pots, forks, dishes, microwave, toaster and coffee pot. There's a community BBQ. Very nice scenery around cabins C & D. The photo on their website shows a large snorkeling pool like area that seems like it can be used aside from the Devils den cave. Well it's covered with green growth and not swimmable at all. The pool is fine but unimpressive. The Devils den itself was pretty cool except if you are there on a weekend be there before 9am to get a spot. Their capacity isn't large and you have to let scuba divers have the right of way. The water is so cold you'll need a wetsuit. There's only that one area to swim, which is small and that's it unless you're scuba diving. I snorkels and saw a few basic fish and rocks. The man Don that works there was super gracious. We snorkeled for an hour or two and was done. Rest of day at pool. Nothing else to do here at all. Next few days we spent driving to other springs within 45min drive. read more

My wife and I here last week to snorkel with my son who was visiting. Easy to find and good parking. During check-in there is a sign that says they give military discounts. Told the lady at the register that I'm retired Army and my son is active duty Air Force. She thanked us for our service. Noticed on my credit card statement she never gave us the discount. Not good, but not a huge deal. Gave the place a one start because there is nothing great about snorkeling here. Nothing to really see underwater except a few fish. You'd be much better off going to Crystal River or Homosassa for snorkeling and at least get to see many more fish, Manatees, and a nice underwater habitat. One unique thing is you're inside a sinkhole. It is a good location for teaching scuba for people getting an intro to cave diving. Restrooms were dirty and not maintained well. Changing tables were all marked for scuba only, but we used them anyways as there were no tables designated for snorkeling. Staff were overall pretty good, but they are super busy. Overall, don't recommend it for snorkeling, but good place for scuba instruction. read more

Not really worth $30 to snorkel ($20 admission fee and $10 for gear). I recommend you bring your own snorkel gear so you don't have to wait. We waited at least 20-30min just to sign up because there was only one person working the counter. And maybe 45 min for snorkel gear because there is no time limit. So you only get the gear when someone returns it. I rather it be cheaper and pay per hour than have unlimited all day access. Because honestly the natural spring is pretty small you won't need more than an hour to snorkel. It's pretty crowded. The spring itself was super cool and it felt great swimming in it. It was unique! I read previous reviews and there are some legit unhappy people in the world. Yes, you get two hours IF you rent the equipment, which can be a long wait. Nobody seemed to mention, if you bring your own snorkel gear, the two hour time limit doesn't apply to you. To be honest, you don't need more than two hours there. The water is cold, but you just have to keep moving around. There are fish swimming around and the cave floor is very cool. I had a great time! The parking was plentiful and there were lots of signs directing you where to go. Do ME a favor, go experience it and don't listen to the people that would be unhappy with a million dollars. This is an ancient domed cave with about 50-55 feet of super clear blue water surrounding a central rock mound. Apparently a large chunk of rock in a dome shape fell from the roof of this formation, leaving a central sky light open to the surface. The center of the rock forms an island, the outer edges are the deepest water. You get to the island by walking into a hole in the side of a rock formation, down a sloped shaft with steps carved into the rock. This shaft penetrates the side of the dome, from there they have wooden stairs leading down to a wood platform on the central island... It's cool beyond belief. The blue water, the shaft of light from the large overhead hole in the ground... it's like something from another planet. If you dive, its great. It's an open water dive so you don't need cave certification. Water is cold, so you need 5 mills or a dry suit - hood, gloves would be nice too. Bring a camera there are fossils in the walls, the light shaft penetrating through the water and the unearth like domed roof and "sky light" striking the blue water make for some great looking shots... read more

This place is nice but came in at 10 am and there was a two hour waiting since there was to many people down in the spring not worth the 5$ to walk around on the ground and remember to bring your FULL snorkel gear must have full face mask spout and fins in order to enter the spring. They have facilities on site to accommodate for camping, cabins for families up to four, and a double wide trailer for parties up to 6! We left Orlando at 5:00 in the morning. We arrived, and it was closed. There was a gate over the entrance with a sign and a phone number. The sign said it didn't open till later. We were in the middle of nowhere and were not going to sit around for an hour and a 1/2. I called and left a message and waited for a call back. No one called us back. This is a nice find, in a beautiful location. The staff is super friendly and the prices are reasonable. Fresh water, open water dive. It's an upside down mushroom-shaped cave about 50 feet deep with a large opening that lets in a beam of light. You still need a flashlight to see the crevices and some of tighter side caves are wired off for safety. The water is a tepid 70 degrees which feels cold when you stay longer than an hour in a 3mm suit (or if you get cold easily.) It's a climb in, down a narrow staircase to a platform where you can just drop on down. The water is fairly clear, not much of fish life, the other water creatures sort of float in and out as the channels brings them through. Apparently there's a tortoise if you are lucky enough to catch him. There's fossils embedded in the walls that a fun to look at and you can get some great shots with an underwater camera. Dive equipment was a little old- as far as fins and boots- I'd bring your own especially if you aren't standard size. I have spent time swimming and snorkeling in many of Florida's springs by far Devil's Den is in a class of its own. Approximately half an hour outside of Gainesville the spring is underground in a limestone cave that has an opening in the ceiling for light and a stairway that was cut out of the limestone to allow access to the spring. I wanted to avoid any crowds so my family and I went on a Friday morning, there were a small group of snorkelers and a couple of scuba divers. The springs themselves are similar to what you might see around Florida, rocky limestone floor, fish, etc. The amazing view to me was above, the cave walls and ceiling and the fact that I was swimming in a cave is what made the experience. We parked around noon, grabbed our gear and walked down a boardwalk to the office. There we signed a waiver, paid the fee, and got a safety brief. Compared to other springs and swimming holes Devil's Den has structured rules and policies, there are rules about your gear, safety, and preservation of the cave. I can see if there are crowds and a space that size to swim with one stairway to enter and exit, it could be chaos. We stopped at one of the many picnic tables, geared up and walked down the narrow walkway to the platform where swimmers enter and exit the springs. The water is the usual low 70's that you can expect of any water coming right out of the aquifer. I navigated around the group of people taking selfies on the platform and jumped right in. It took about 10 minutes of snorkeling to see most of what was underwater, after that, I gazed at the cave above which was beautiful. After about 45 minutes I soaked in all that I wanted to and exited the springs. I probably will not return to Devil's Den, it was fun, but it was one of those things that experiencing once is enough, however, I was glad that I did visit. Here are my tips/recommendations. You will save $10 if you bring your own snorkeling gear, even cheap snorkeling gear will be sufficient to enjoy the cave. Go when it is not crowded, even with small groups inside I had to keep my head on a swivel to avoid a few potential collisions with other swimmers, since while snorkeling we have a tendency to look straight down. I went to Devils Den after seeing a viral video of the location. I was super excited to go check it out. I went early on a weekday and had the Den almost to myself. I rented snorkeling gear and headed straight down with my GoPro. I really enjoyed my time there, but after 20 minutes it's all the same. I came across a photo of Devil's Den while browsing online, almost a year prior to snorkeling in its 68-degree waters. It's a very uniquely place, so the decision to incorporate it into our road trip to Orlando was unanimous. There are lots of rules to follow, and you'll be briefed on all of them, so you'll want to pay close attention, as even the most minor infraction will get you kicked out. Once that's done, you'll want to check your bags to see if you remembered to pack a wetsuit or if you'll need to rent one. Make your way over to the picnic area, put your stuff down, and get suited up. Not all pavilions come equipped with grills, so if that's important to you, you'll want to come early. As you descend into the cave, you'll probably notice the change in temperature. If you do, it's because you're not wearing a wetsuit. Smh. You know what--I'm done... I'm done talking to you. This is a hidden gem. But for what it's worth a lot of my friends were expecting more than what we got. It's a small cave and nothing to see. Of course the water Is extremely cold. There are only very small fish and one or two medium fish. All there is too it is what you see in pictures nothing more nothing less. Just a big circle to swim around. Now, don't get me wrong it is a thing of beauty but I wish there was more to it. Thankfully me and party of 11 were staying in the cabins and arrived Friday at 2:30 to Devils den to check in. They suggested we go in the cave that same day since we were a large party and there was only an hour wait compared to 4-5 hours that other people experience. We took them up on the suggestion and went straight to the cabins and waiting for their phone call to let us know it was our turn. The pictures taken are beautiful. The location is great. Cabins: The cabins are small. Two twin beds on the second floor and one full bed on the first floor located as soon as you open the door. The kitchen has 2 stove tops, comes with plates, cups, forks, bbqing equipment. There's also a place to do a fire and the wood is located by the camp ground area. The fridge is very small kind of like a small hotel fridge. So nothing really fit /: Camping: It gets really cold at night. read more

Devil's Den Prehistoric Spring is a spectacular place that is the real Florida! I had my first ever open water SCUBA checkout dives there as a teenager (a student at Florida State University), and a couple of decades later, now I get to take my students to Devil's Den. The facilities are excellent and perfectly set up for divers, though snorkelers are also welcome. There are narrow steps that require careful execution and movement, but when you see the aqua colored water and the sunlight beaming through the exposed limestone, it is worth it! . The water is gorgeous and clear, and the water temperature is 72°F (22°C) degrees year round. If you don't have your own snorkel or SCUBA gear, you can rent it at a reasonable rate. I've been to Devil's Den a dozen or so times, and I'm always impressed with how friendly and professional the staff are, even when there are long lines of sometimes grumpy snorkelers. I'm shocked at the negative reviews...it seems most were unhappy with the rules Devil's Den has to ensure safety of its guests. Their website is very informative and states the rules and lots of other helpful information. Because this gem is so amazing, there are often lines to get in. My suggestion is to arrive early. The grounds are beautiful and include palm trees and fruit trees including loquats. There are some very friendly, cool kitties on the property so it feels like home. They also have nice camping and cabins on site, plus places you can grill and set up gatherings. SCUBA diving is wonderful with lots of fish and some turtles, plus many cool swim-throughs. There are a few dive platforms for those wanting to practice skills, and advanced divers will enjoy the variety of swim-throughs and limestone formations. Maximum depth is about 56 feet (17 meters). I love this place and would never get tired of diving there! Even just spending time on the grounds, which are beautiful, is relaxing and fun. Devil's Den is located in the small town of Williston, Florida. For any SCUBA visitors to the area, I highly recommend a couple of days here then hopping over to Blue Grotto (also in Williston about a 6-minute drive away) if you would like to get in some deeper diving. I love both places, and there are also many state parks with SCUBA diving nearby! read more

We went there today and the directions were unclear on whether you could see devils den without diving. However, that was not the issue. The issue was the female diving safety instructor in the office with the attitude. She acted as if we weren't heading for the exit immediately after being told devils den is only for divers. Then shouting "yall need to leave" with a petty wave and pointing at the pathway we're walking on. She was clearly having a bad day on that time of the month so we understand but totally unprofessional nonetheless. read more

Anyone who shows up prepared always has excellent experience -the majority of negative reviews are a result of poor planning and not reading up on the rules for entering, snorkeling or diving this unique oasis! This is primarily a dive resort. Also, the crew was particularly helpful in assisting iDive with the Zombie Dive after hours. That takes a lot coordination and man power, and they delivered! Devils Den I'm troubled with how to write this review because of course the natural wonder of an underground spring in a dry cave is magical, impressive, and just beautiful by any standards. The staff was friendly, welcoming, and very helpful. They give you a site map, arm bands, and a list of rules. They also provide you with a list of nearby local restaurants and fast food places. There are also several supermarkets, Pharmacies, and several other auto part stores, ect in town, about 3 miles away. Our RV site had water, 30 Amp electric hookups, and a dump station; some sites do not. There is one main shared dump station with water hose at the RV park entrance. The RV park was comfortable and tranquil. Trash points and park tables are throughout the park. Entering the cave is very impressive and a little spooky. The water is a beautiful clear blue that allow you to clearly spot fish swing around, and there we're plenty of fishes. The cave ceiling opening allows the sun to shine trough causing the water to sparkle in many different shades of blue. The staging platform inside the water was perfect, but if you are 5 feet tall it can be a challenge to stand on it. :-) Everyone MUST wear snorkel or diving gear; you can bring your own mask, snorkel, and fins, no exception; you MUST have ALL THREE. If you don't, you can rent some on site. Having said that, I have to also point out that some of the other areas of the park, to include the RV park are not as "magical". I will start with arriving at the park. The signs guiding you into the park are a bit confusing. The road is in horrible shape; a dirt road full of pot holes throughout. If you are towing a fifth-wheel, travel trailer, or driving an RV, there is no place to park at the main office to check-in. You have to drive past the check-in office and figure out where to park (at the RV parking at the back of the park) and then walk back to the office; no sign guides you to do so. The pool bathrooms have hold-and-release valves that are 7 feet high; I had to enter the woman's bathroom to hold the shower handle down for my wife because she is 5 feet tall and cold not reach them. The ceilings in both bathrooms were full of spider webs and appeared to have not been wash down in a very long time. There is a food truck on site, but it was closed all three days of our stay. All in all, it was a great experience, but I would say that if you are not a scuba fan, one day will be sufficient; not much more to do at the park other then the pool, tossing sand bags, and several other minor activities. read more

Today, we made a reservation, drove one hour, showed up and their card reader was down and they're only accepting cash. They weren't very accommodating or apologetic.... Beautiful place to go snorkeling & scuba diving. Be sure to go early as it is a bit difficult to soak in the beauty surrounded by tons of people. You'll have to be extra careful swimming to avoid colliding with other swimmers. Scuba divers have the right of way which is understandable but some of the divers on my trip were rude to people standing in their way. When it is packed it is hard to be aware of everyone around you so just keep that in mind when visiting. The staff in the office are very friendly and are open to answering any questions you may have. There aren't any lockers so leave all of your belongings in the car and the office will hold onto the key for you. Water was freezing but was worth diving in. read more

The scuba divers have always the preferences, so if you go just for snorkeling then you have to wait as well. The good, friendly staff and very nice! You could gets some awesome shots depending on the place and time you get there. One of the best reason it's call Devil Den's is because the vapor from all the warm that gets trap in cave is going to exit at some point. Beautiful grounds, decent amount of parking, and friendly people that work here. There were only two, dimly lit, weak toilets and one shower/changing area in the women's room. I also wish they had a docking station for shorter people to take off their BC, remove their tank, and bring to the filling station. The picnic tables and pavilions are typically taken over by families and snorkelers. The spring itself was beautiful. The cavern is a good place to complete open water certification. It was super busy on the 29th with snorkelers and divers alike. I definitely wouldn't come if I was just snorkeling because there's so much to explore down below. Walking down the narrow steps was pretty thrilling and scary, just take your time, go slow, and go one at a time. The pavilion we were located was in the back. It had an area to hang your wetsuits, towels etc, a built in water fountain/shower/tap. Outlets were a bit wonky. During high season they have an area they maintain just for divers but since it's the winter they let algae and what not grow. read more

a few weeks ago, i just happened to see a picture of devil's den on pinterest. after some research, i realized it was only about 3 hours away from my in-laws in sarasota... well it just so happens that my husband is on spring break this week so we had planned on visiting them anyway. we decided to hit devil's den up on the drive home since it was on our way. it is located about 30 mins off of I-75 and WELL worth the trip. if you love gorgeous natural wonders and snorkeling or scuba diving in a place that is like something out of paradise, tucked away in a random town in florida, this is the place for you. neither my husband nor i are certified scuba divers so we knew we would be snorkeling, which was totally fine by me! once we pulled up to the office, we met p (stands for prince), a really nice and talkative man who gave us a waiver to sign, rang us up for snorkeling ($10 each with an extra charge if you need to rent any gear) and then showed us around while telling us the history of the place. the cave is in the shape of an upside down mushroom, with a hole in the ground above that lets in natural light (and plenty of caterpillars in the spring). the crystal clear water is around 72 degrees year round. there are tall, narrow stairs that lead down to a platform in the middle of the springs where you can dive in or step down more stairs into the water. there are some fish, a turtle, and fossils for you to check out during your dive! once we got changed into our swimwear, we went down the stairs to the cave. we picked the perfect day to go because it was supposed to rain but ended up being clear skies. therefore, we had the entire place to ourselves! we probably spent about 2 hours snorkeling then we had to hit the road. i wish we had been able to stay longer and that we would have brought a flashlight to see more! we will definitely go back the next time we are in florida! **also one thing i would like to note is that neither of us wore a wetsuit and we personally felt fine! it was chilly at first but once we were in the water moving around, we didn't feel a real need for a wetsuit.** read more
