Everywhere else is shut and you know that all you'll be able to eat when you get home is your pasta sauce jar that you've had in the cupboard for the past year untouched, or the stale ryvita. But no more Brighton! You can pretty much stumble in to here at any time of night and choose from a varied menu to satisfy the drunkest, hungriest of bellies. However, this is also a place that you will probably regret what you've eaten the next day once your beer goggles are off and you are having the fry up beer sweats. Of course don't expect gourmet food but they do a decent fry up, cheesy chips, bacon sandwiches, burgers etc and all at reasonable prices here too. Let's not create any false illusion here....it's a fast food, greasy spoon type place. So if that's what you're after then perfect! I know that when my local pub calls last orders next and everywhere on St James Street food wise is shut AND I haven't got anything to eat at home then, just then I may return!

I love the idea of a breakfast place that's only open during non-breakfast hours. The perfect tonic after a night of gin and tonic. Cheap as chips. MENU RECOMMENDATIONS Go for it. Have the Gutbuster. A full English breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, ham, beans, tomatoes and fries(?). SERVICE NOTES Order at the counter, try to nab a table if you can. LOCATION NOTES One street east of Grand Parade at Morley. Sketchy. HUMOUROUS STORY Anytime you go to the Market Diner you're bound to end up with a good story, it's only a question of if you're sober enough to remember it. The first time I went there I was just visiting Brighton for the day with a friend of mine and had met up with Guy, another friend who was a local. We did everything that night, including taking a taxi out to the marina to go bowling and finally ending up at the Market Diner on Guy's insistence. Halfway through the meal Guy stood up abruptly and said "Right, train's at 4, you know how to get there. Good. I was only a mirage." and swiftly exited the diner before we had a chance to say anything back.

I went in hoping for a brownie or some sort of confectionery, but was sadly disappointed - although the facade looks like it might well serve patisserie, the closest they can offer is a Twix. Still, it wasn't just any Twix but a bizarre limited edition Twix that looked like it had been brought here via time travel from 40 years ago. It was lovely though, and also interesting as a historical artefact. If you went in here for hot food, which is more what they regularly do, you definitely wouldn't be disappointed on portion sizes. I saw a guy in here eating what looked like the haunch of a young bull elephant, surrounded by most of the jungle from whence it came. Food overflows the sides of the plates. Quality, though, looks a bit school-dinnerish, so I'd say this is somewhere to come only if you're very hungry and far out on the end of town.

I WANT REAL FOOD. if i want School dinner food then I may as well go to the EX KEBAB shop now saying they are a Cafe. Just to put you straight ont he name Wacky Diner it is because the people are wacky and great fun to be around. As Americans, we were interested in seeing the English take on a lot of our classic American diner dishes. I had the chocolate chip pancakes, my sister had cheese fries and macaroni and cheese (she has an intense love for cheese) and our friend had the burger with seasoned fries. I think the best things on the table were the pancakes and the cheese fries. It seemed to be ACTUAL cheese melted onto the fries instead of the fake "nacho" cheese that we get in the states -- even though the fake cheese is also delicious. The macaroni and cheese was a bit dry and in need of a bit more flavor, as was the burger. The pancakes? Awesome. They came out warm, fluffy, topped with a sprinkling of powdered sugar and a side of butter and maple syrup.

At this, they fail. Any Denny's will provide a better experience than this, without the London prices. Some complaints: after asking for sweetener for my coffee, I was informed they only have sugar or agave syrup. I asked for an omelette, and I was informed they were too busy to make omelettes, even though the menu offers scrambled eggs any way you like. How time consuming is an omelette? So I revised my order for 3 scrambled eggs with a side of bacon. They brought out two plates, with 2 eggs on each plate! The service was slow and unfriendly. This might be acceptable if it was a 24-hour diner, and I was there at 4 am with the clubbers and other freaks sobering up for the journey home. It was noon! I sense the people dining here were part of the bleed-over traffic from a nearby Breakfast Club, as there was no queue for a table at The Diner, unlike the competition on a Saturday morning. Apparently, this location is part of a chain. America isn't very popular these days, so these Londoners have a lot of cheek destroying the idea of one of the few good things you are usually guaranteed in the States: a friendly breakfast diner where you can get a bleedin' omelette when you ask! (One positive: they serve bottomless filtered coffee. There is that.)

I've had breakfast here on a couple of occasions, and have found the staff incredibly pleasant. They're the kind of ladies that call you "love" and ask you to relax while they sort out your order. The customers too, are equally friendly, with one gentleman washing up his plate after finishing his meal. The radio plays gently in the background, and helps make Snak Attack feel even warmer, with the right balance between calm and friendly. I like the old school chequered white and red table tops too. Very traditional. And the food! Now, I'm not one for exaggeration, but I had the best bacon sandwich of my LIFE here. You know how mum used to do them? Yeah? Well even better than that... it was gorgeous, to the point that I felt bad when I put a bit of brown sauce in one half. The bread might as well have been baked in front of me it was so white and fresh (and I'm picky about bread, being a bit of a baker myself) with enough butter that you can taste it, without finding the bread swimming when the hot bacon arrives. I've no doubt they'd cook the bacon how you ask here, but leave them to their own devices, and you will have a more than generous helping of the most tender bit of pig your tongue has ever had the pleasure to enjoy... Mwah! Its pretty standard fair so far as prices are concerned, and although I can assure you that the rest of the food looks up to the standard of the bacon sandwich, I have never strayed beyond my bread and butter friend.
