Amazing fine dining experience!…read more * * * EXPERIENCE * * * It was a rainy night, we uber'd there and the entrance barely had any light on and it was a bit hard to find. Once we walked in, they helped us take care of our coats and brought to our seat immediately. All the servers we encountered were extremely nice, they were funny too and had a lot of interesting conversations. Each dish they brought over they explained in details what the ingredients were, why they were serving in such ways etc. We also got wine pairing, our sommelier was very knowledgeable and patient, especially since we had very little knowledge about Portuguese wine he was patient to explain details to us. Not to mention there wasn't one wine that I didn't find fascinating. Wine lovers heaven. We chose the "Portugalidade" menu. * * * FOOD * * * Tomato Soup with Cheese: A- Super refreshing, this combination was surprisingly tasty, the cheese neutralized the tartness from the tomato, yet you still feel the tomato freshness back of your tongue. Mussel Flan: A Hard to describe the taste, it was wonderful - I could taste tomato and cucumber, and there was real mussel inside. Very refreshing again. Croquette: A- The crab meat used was very fresh, not very salty which I enjoyed. Ham with Melon: A The ham was soft, not too salty as some Spanish prosciutto/ham tastes, with the wafer biscuit, wonderful combination. The presentation was beautiful. Pigeon Meat: B+ A bit gamey, not my favorite but big contrast with the dishes before. Dessert Cracker: A This was served with chocolate moose wrapping foie gras, the sweetness blends with the gaminess of foie gras, perfect pairing with Port wine to bring out the berries flavor. Squid: A Stuffed with potato and nuts, the squid meat was super soft, so tasty, for a person who loves fishy food this was perfect. Sting Ray: A It was served with some herbs, tasted a bit like sea bass, the herbs helped bring out the fishy taste, and I enjoyed the soup even more - herby fishy such a nice blend. Lobster Risotto: B It's a bit spicy with creaminess, big piece of lobster, one thing I wasn't impressed was that some of the rice was a bit hard, a bit undercooked or was it the style? Cabbage with Beets and Beans sauce: A Can't believe such a simple dish had so much complexity! The beans was the star, super crunchy on outside and smush-y inside, cabbage was super fresh. Pork: A+ This piece of pork upper leg meat was combined with chips, clams and french fries, we were told to eat in one bite and I was speechless - it absorbed all the soup underneath with so much pork taste, chips and fries were crunchy and overall there was so much complexity. "Keep it as a surprise": A+ I'm not going to reveal what's used in this dish, you just have to go try, our servers kept it secret what we were about to eat and it instantly reminded me of something unique.... just try it, just do. Pineapple Guava Sorbet with Raspberry and cream: A Perfect way to end the night after the super complex dish above, cleaned my palate right after, super refreshing. Oh man I love this place, it truly showed the beauty of Portuguese ingredients, wonderful wines and Portuguese people hospitality.

We were so excited to try this Michelin star restaurant and it was by far one of the best dining…read moreexperiences we've ever had. To start the restaurant itself is so intimate and unique being set in an old Portuguese house gave it a really amazing vibe. The staff were so friendly and took us on an culinary journey explaining each course in detail and attending to any needs we may have. We decided to have the chefs tasting which came with two firsts two entrees and dessert along with a wine paring done by such a knowledgeable sommelier. Before we even got into our actual chefs tasting we were given two dishes off the menu to start a cold vegetable soup and two eggs that were divine. We then began our tasting which words can't even do justice to the flavors and joy that were packed into each bite. We started with a unique stewed codfish in beans. The fish was so tender and the beans brought a different and delicious element to the dish. Next we had the amberjack fish in a savory hot broth that just melted in your mouth with the fish being served to finish cooking when combined with the broth making each bite on levels. Third we had the turbot with coriander in a bivalve sauce that was so fresh and such a wonderful combination of sea food flavors. Our final dish was the bisaro pork which was just so rich and succulent and such a great treat as it is native to the land. We were then given a tasty little pallet cleanser before our dessert. We had the raspberry rose lychee that was a mixture of delicious fruity flavors to cap off the meal along with one bonus dessert a blueberry pastry marshmallow and chocolate that added one last treat to the night. I can't say enough about the experience they provided us for the night and would highly recommend that you make reservation and enjoy the culinary experience that o paparico has to offer!

NOT the way you want your dinner to go while in the Porto area - 1 of 2…read more - - - - - Note that this is a LOW 3 stars. I am not happy about writing this review. O Antunes is one of those places that comes up on the list of long running restaurants in Porto. In Lisbon, a lot of them are on that street slightly east of Rossio where the menu hawking is aggressive. You may see that here in the Ribeira, but you don't see it in the center. I had attempted to eat here last year with a local and it was closed on that day. It was in a smaller locale, on the other side of the same street. Photos speak to that. They are now in a larger and newer locale. I scoured the menu and saw the usual fish and chicken dishes. I did not want the salmao (salmon) because this is not America's Northwest and I might have liked espadarte (swordfish), but they don't offer it. I settled on a slab of bife de atun - a filleted tuna steak. It was preceded by a bowl of soup, which is very typical here, but I did not follow up with dessert. There was a reason for that. The waiter (instead of "politically correct" male server) was okay initially but, like so many in the white shirt and black slacks who do this work in factory-like restaurants in Portugal's bigger cities, he was big on one word answers and amiss on anything that needed more elaboration. The food was delivered fairly quickly. The food at O Antunes was good, but this was a standard platter, with a standard presentation, throughout the area. Tuna as a big filet is better than one might think, and it featured the thin pink line across the center, which means it was optimally cooked, but it's a simple and healthy but not particularly exciting dish. I'd say the food is about 4 stars. The fact that they don't bring on the avalanche of bread, cheese, olives, and pates was a welcome relief. That gets 5 stars for bucking this annoying custom that fools many first time visitors to Portugal. I thought that would set the pace for the remainder of the experience. The newer locale is spacious and airy, albeit spartan. It has a bar where the desserts are behind a case. I'd say that the setting gets about 3.5 stars. The service might have stayed at 3 stars. At the end of the meal, the bill arrived. I showed a card and the hand held P.O.S. arrived (that means point of sale). I noticed several P.O.S.s with different colors toward the administrative counter. The card ran and, right before the receipt rolled out, the P.O.S. wasn't shown to me. It appeared that the waiter had pushed a button or two with lighting speed and I got the receipt showing that I had opted for the conversion and that it had an additional 4% mark up. I did not opt for anything. I asked him to reverse it and start over. He pretended he didn't know what I was talking about. My credit card converts the Euro at the mid-market rate and another bank need not be involved for a markup. This is not about the 4% as much as it about the principle. More than half the restaurants do NOT do this ... they process in Euro, which is what you want. Those that do show you the P.O.S. so you can choose. (Choose the local currency, and then reject the conversion.) This can really add up and leads a person to wonder if merchants have an "incentive" to do this. I don't know. Spread over a lot of transactions, this could start looking like "Office Space." Is this the new "bread, cheese, and olives" in Portugal? I told him I'd wait for the owner. (Translation: "I want to speak with the manager.") Guests could probably see I was getting up a few times and irked. That's good. The manager finally understood the problem rather quickly and wanted to resolve it. The waiter, who was a little too short with everything, seemed to have enough time on his hands to listen to this exchange. The manager computed the difference between the bill with the prevailing exchange rate and with the mark-up. He handed me that difference in change. He mentioned that "we're here for you," meaning all their guests; however, that mantra needs to be passed on to everyone in the restaurant. Also, the younger guy bussing the table, a transplant to the area, was quite a bit more likable than the waiter. If in the center and wanting a traditional Portuguese meal, I might explore other restaurants or return to the reliable stalwart that is Abadia, which also has good food but has always provided mild mannered service that I really appreciate.

Antunes was right next to our air bnb so we came here twice. We were able to get a table…read moreimmediately and the server was very nice both times! On our second visit we shared a pork knee which was a massive portion, we all ate our fill and there was still food leftover! The fish from our first visit was big and delicious too. The crème brulee was sort of eggy so I didn't love that, but honestly it didn't feel like a big deal. The best part about Antunes though is how affordable it is! It almost felt like we were stealing with the amount of food and wine we had compared to how much it all cost. If you get a chance, definitely come to Antunes, you won't be disappointed!
