Very informative and interactive. Also some walking trails outside to explore. Fought on April 8, 1864, the Battle of Mansfield was the deciding engagement of the Red River Campaign, and it was the last major victory by a Confederate army during the American Civil War. Named the Red River Campaign, Halleck's plan comprised a three-pronged assault. 1) Major General Nathaniel P. Banks would march 20,000 troops from the area around New Orleans across southern Louisiana and occupy Alexandria before moving on to Shreveport. 2) Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter would ascend the Red River and join Banks at Alexandria with 30+ warships and an accompanying supply fleet. A detachment of 10,000 soldiers from William T. Sherman's Army of the Tennessee, commanded by Brigadier General Andrew Jackson Smith would protect Dixon's flotilla. 3) After Banks and Porter joined forces and continued upriver toward Shreveport, Major General Frederick Steele would lead another 10,000 Union soldiers out of Little Rock, Arkansas and approach Shreveport from the north or east. The Confederate commander, Major-General Dick Taylor, chose Mansfield as the place where he would make his stand against the advancing Union army under General Nathaniel Banks. Throughout the engagement, Banks could never take advantage of his superior numbers because of poor troop deployment along the narrow road. Fewer than one-half of his soldiers took part in the battle. During the night, Banks ordered his army to fall back and regroup at the town of Pleasant Hill.

It was the late Shreveport Mayor Clyde Fant, himself, who had a hand in placing this statue here at that time, as a matter of fact. Captain Shreve was born in New Jersey, the fifth of eight children on October 21, 1785. He became a steamboat pilot at a very early age and in 1833 began the arduous task of removing what became known as The Great Raft, a massive accumulation of thick brush, and underwater debris and blockage that stretched for an estimated 150-200 miles by most accounts, from obstructing the Red River in this area. And in doing so, this project took five years from 1833-1838, and made what would eventually become the city of Shreveport, also his own namesake, and a most viable port of and for the South. Shreve was just 48 years of age when he first faced off with The Great Raft. Shreve never did actually reside long-term in this town that still bears his name and he passed away, and was buried in the city of St. Louis, where he still rests to this day in Bellefontaine Cemetary. He was 65 years old at the time of his death on March 6, 1851. This statue is open year round and is free for public viewing. It is within easy walking distance from Sci Port Discovery Center, El Dorado Resort and Casino as well as Sam's Town Casino and Hotel and also Riverview Park.

Thrill Hill, as this bumpy, curvy, stretch of road on Gilbert Drive is universally known, as far as…read morethe Shreveport universe goes, is to be adored, admired, and certainly respected. The speed limit on this fairway is 35 miles per hour. It is an attraction premium for sledding as the snow falls on the occasional winter we might have in this area. (So, keep the toboggan within arm's reach should a snowflake appear and then descend!) This self-named Hill or series thereof successive Hills also may have some attraction to the occasional or even overnight extreme athlete be it via skate or possibly longboard, though it's somewhat terrifying to even imagine attempting this feat, especially with oncoming traffic in both, and at some points in this high speed quest even all possible directions. In a motor vehicle, at higher rates of ill-advised speeds one might actually catch their desired and sought after air and pull their very own Dukes of Hazzard, but this is again ill-advised, because we all know that what goes up, must at some point with great certainty also come down, and this is, sad to say that to stick this landing right here may be more difficult than one may have imagined or preconceived before that final press of the accelerator.
