Really enjoyed our visit to the design museum! Most of the exhibits were very interactive and interesting. The virtual reality pet of the museum was was extremely cool! It was cool to learn about Finnish design and inventions that are still widely popular today. Also learning about the history behind their interesting glass vases and glassware. There was a lot to read about and see. We got the ticket that also grants you entry into the architecture museum across the street but in my opinion that was a waste of time and money. We only spent maybe 20 minutes in the architecture museum as there wasn't as much to see or learn about.

    "Netsurfer" had me silently amused.

For a country that has become recognized around the world for its good culture of design, I was initially expecting Helsinki's Designmuseo to be something far bigger and bolder, on par with the size and scope of the other art museums in town. However, that is simply not the way this musem has been designed, and I actually appreciate the curated, more intimate scale of the collection and exhibits here. Spread across 3 floors of a lovely red building across from Saksalainen kirkko, the Designmuseo offers a visitor a glimpse into decades of Finnish design (think textiles, housewares, and other manufactured goods) in its permanent collection. The basement contains a gallery space for revolving exhibitions, and the top floor offered a beautiful show on the artist Kirsti Rantanen! Check out the small shop with adjoining cafe- both offer a nice reprieve from drooling over the lovely things to be found in this museum.

Beautiful museum. We were fortunate enough to visit in December 2013, when there was no entrance fee charged! There was a great exhibition on contemporary graphic design upstairs. It showed today's movement in graphic design and posed numerous interesting questions on the topic. On the ground floor we found the museums regular exhibition on Finnish design. Well displayed and explained. In the basement there was an exhibition on jewelry. Not really our taste... But definitely "interesting"

You should definitely come visit this museum in the Kaartinkaupunki neighborhood in Helsinki. Fascinating displays of Finnish design from the greats like Alvar Aalto, Marimekko, Iittala, Eero Aarnio among others. If you love funky Finnish design then this museum is perfect. There are even some interactive exhibits as well. It's not that big of a museum, for me it's the perfect size and I felt the €10 admission was worth it. Highly recommended and can't wait to come back.

I enjoyed quite a lot of the art here, paintings and some sculptures. The more "modern" stuff is the art that I really enjoy. And then there's the "contemporary" which is sometimes a little bit too far above my head to really understand. Political messages, I tend to find a little challenging. Still, art is subjective and I'm sure you will enjoy this museum just as much as I did. [Review 10062 overall, 1647 of 2018.]

What a cool art museum! HAM, or Helsinki Art Museum is a modern/contemporary art museum located in…read morea big shopping mall. HAM contributes a great cultural gem for the city here, with thought-provoking and interesting works of art. They had a big exhibition on Parisian art from around the time that Picasso was painting there, showing a lot of where he got his influences. They also had a seemingly permanent exhibition of photographs of a Finnish rock quarry that has interesting sounding geological features. When we went, the top floor of the museum was off-limits due to their ongoing installation of a new exhibit. So I felt like we missed a good deal of the museum's space. The museum is easy to get around, and the artworks are titled and described in English as well as Finnish. Outside the museum, there's a cool gift shop, with reasonably priced prints, cards, and some art supplies. They even have a clearance section with cool artsy books in Finnish! The museum also contributes large scale works of art to the mall that it's located in- so check out the chandelier made from pots and pans and the other big sculptures! I was really glad to find this museum. It's got some cool stuff! The best part, was we happened to show up on half-priced day- Score!

Our primary purpose was the kids area as we had three kiddos that desperately needed some play and imagination time after walking the city for some time. They've got a whole section for the kiddos with lots of stuff to jump around and climb on, an old kitchen where play food lives and a small stage where they can put on puppet shows. There's another area where they house classic toys - sort of a tease to have them displayed but not let the kids play with them, but they're fun to look at! Entry was free and there appeared to be plenty of other stuff to check out throughout the place. Stroller parking is outside but easily seen from the kids area and there's a coffee shop right off the main entryway. There's really no reason to not be checking this place out, especially if the kiddos are in tow!

On my visit, I saw "Mad About Helsinki," which was about places in the city that people have always had a connection with, and explanations about what makes them special or relevant even today. It was interesting to find out about places that no longer exist (such as the mermaid tanks) as well as spots that remain favorites to this day (like Cafe Regatta). In addition to two floors of this exhibition, there was also a room featuring photography from the city during the early 20th century. All in all, it took less than an hour to see everything, and it was nice to have some added context. if you're going to be in town for more than a few days, it's worth checking the museum out.
