Founded in 1852, this is the oldest bakery and cafe in Finland. Stopped in for a quick bite and was pleased with what we ordered. Yes, we tried a pastry since that's what they are most famous for...and, the pastry of choice was a Napoleon. Very good. Firm top, but all under layers were soft and delicate. Delicious in deed! The most impressive thing we ordered was initially to share, but it was soooo good, we had to order a 2nd one. Drum roll............reindeer pie!!! Not at all what we thought we were ordering, but omg, one of the best meals of the trip. Service was wonderful as they were very attentive. There was a train stop just outside for convenience too.

Our Omena Hotel is not too far away so we decided to come by to try it out. With a claim as Finland's oldest bakery and a history dating back to 1852 it must be worth a visit, we figured. We ended up having the breakfast buffet as we want to sample a variety of things. At 17.90 per person it was not exactly cheap, but the quality is definitely there. A little disappointing that their pastry, for which they are renowned for, is not included in the buffet. There are some nice bread (but we find bread in Finland to be generally excellent compared to what we have in the US). I got to sample the skagen, the Swedish shrimp toast, and a pudding which looks like a tiramisu with fruit, and which name, pappilan hätävara, translates as the Parish's Emergency Fund. Afterwards my friends told me it's the type where you throw things you find in the pantry - whipped cream, bread crumbs, jam and fruit - for a last minute easy dessert. This parish certainly has a good pantry. : ) The yogurt, baked egg and other offerings are all delicious. I also love their porridge - it's really thick and chewy and flavorful. I don't know what cereal they used and what they flavored it with, but it just tasted so good. I was surprised though that it was just barely lukewarm. Ditto the coffee, not very hot. I would have thought the Finns would need some hot coffee and porridge to warm them up amidst the snow... It was a good experience, and I won't mind coming back were our stay longer.

I had read about this cafe online and found it walking around town! Just in time for a coffee and pastry . Sunday morning and it was packed. They have breakfast buffet which is why I think it was so busy. Or the pastries are just good . I got seated on a small table because I said I'd be quick and just wanted coffee and a snack. I chose the cappuccino and the Korvapuusti , which is a cinnamon roll type pastry . Asked them to warm it up as it was kinda rainy outside plus I thought it would taste better. This piece of sweet sugar, cinnamon and layers of pastry was just perfect. With coffee. Great mid morning pick me up. The service here is very quick and they are so polite. Very efficient. They have a big range of items to choose from pastries, cakes and there is definitely something for everyone. Also a full breakfast menu and they do lunch too. Great stop if you need a nice cafe with good service and variety. Some great traditional items to chose from. Left here very happy !

I would not recommend this location. I made my reservation weeks in advance and in anticipation to visiting Helsinki. I read numerous blogs and articles about the history and the food. We arrived on time and we're seated along the window. We were not given any menus. We had to flag down to servers to get the menus a woman with blonde hair and another woman with brown hair and a ponytail. Then the woman with the ponytail return to take our order but was told by the kitchen that only the lunch buffet was available. We chose this location to try some specific menu items as well as some bakery items. We were not interested in the pulled pork buffet as it does not need our dietary needs. It was shocking to us because both employees did not inform us even prior to being seated that only the lunch buffet was available. We ended up leaving and went down the street to another location. Our expectations were clearly not met. Nowhere did I see that the menu would not be available to us. We had a 1 PM reservation. No one bothered to call us. Email us or anything to let us know that there was only one option.

This is one of the oldest cafes in Helsinki. We enjoyed a nice lunch here. The smoked salmon sandwich was really good and filling. The lunch buffet is a good deal as well. The cafe was pretty crowded during lunch, but we had a reservation. The service was decent, unfortunately there is construction outside. Would recommend coming here for a nice and casual lunch.

    Tuhatlehti (caramel millefeuille). Magnificent pastry!

Wow, this place is great. I sat in the cafe one September afternoon and had a piece of pastry and coffee that I enjoyed more than any other in recent memory. What was the pastry, you ask? It was a Tuhatlehti, which is basically a caramel millefeuille or napoleon. It was not too sweet, was very flavorful and each of the many layers of pastry crunched and crackled just the right way. Most pastries like this are soggy and leaden, but not this one! It is pretty, too - see the picture I posted here. The coffee is rich and flavorful, as well, and if you want another cup or tow, you can bring your cup to the pot and fill yourself right back up at no extra charge. Service as very pleasant. I returned for their breakfast buffet, which costs €9.90 and is a very good value. It includes cold meats, several varieties of cheeses and breads, Finnish-style eggs, a sweet puddinglike dish, juice and coffee or tea. Everything was very good, but those eggs were superb. I am sure they contained cream and butter. You can eat as much as you like, and no one rushes you. It is all very civilized and another opportunity to watch and listen to the locals. Finnish is such a pretty language. Pity I only understand one word (kiitos).

Just the fact that you can always rely on the staff here speaking Swedish too is worth a praise. Since Swedish speaking in Helsinki for some sad reason isn't as common as it used to be only a few years ago - and yes it is nice to be able to communicate in your mother tongue with a neighbouring country, and not having to rely on English all the time. That said it's obviously a classic Helsinki cafe with Swedish-Finnish ancestry that appeals to all ages. The conversations at the nearby tables seemed to be of the more intellectual kind and mostly in Swedish. The tea and cake I had was lovely, even though the latter was a bit on the dry side. If you enjoy boozy pastry I highly recommend the "champagnekork", champagne cork, which is a pastry champed as a cork that has been soaked in alcohol. Plus for a really nice toilet too.

Came here for the famous Napoleon pie that we read about in a guidebook (and in fact heard about on the bus). The pie was so so, staffs were extremely friendly but a bit too slow to take our order. So I've got a mixed feeling about this place.

And Karl Fazer is famous for being a chocolatier, so Fazer chocolate is a must try, too. Fortunately for me, Karl Fazer Cafe was located right across from my hotel, so I had easy access to chocolate and coffee here. The cafe was very popular, and what's nice is that they are open the entire day, serving meals or something lighter. They also have a chocolate shop on one side of the cafe that you can grab and go. For one of my visits here, I tried the geisha dessert, which is a specialty, along with a Fazer mocha. They were both good, and I was pleasantly surprised that the geisha dessert was a mix of chocolate and hazelnut since the lilac color threw me off, so was afraid it would be a fruity dessert. But it turned out to be better than expected. Another visit, I tried the cinnamon bun, which was solid. It wasn't the best in town, but solid - and definitely better than anything I'd ever get back home. If you're in Helsinki, Karl Fazer is a name you'll hear - and you'll need to try the famous chocolate and pay a visit to the first cafe of the country. It's easily walking distance to many sites as it's in the city center, and has outdoor seating. Glad to have checked out a place of Finnish history.

A very fitting city for having coffee with desserts and snacks - 2 of 2…read more Fazer, or Karl Fazer, is one of the best known coffeehouse and dessert places in the Finnish capital. It appears there might be more than one location, with a few being almost too close to each other. I was trying to figure out which one is the main location. Once you find it, you will know that this is the feather in the cap of the Fazer brand. This Fazer coffeehouse is not just about getting something warm to drink and eat. It's an experience. This is a large Art Deco cafe' where they didn't skimp on decking out the exterior and the interior to be true to the genre and, of the places to sit, I wound up seating under a slightly domed glass ceiling that was beautiful, so it was no wonder I gravitated toward that part of the interior. They sell coffee, tea, and cakes, but also have sandwiches, chocolate, candy, and more. There are more bins and shelves with goods than you'd expect in a coffeehouse. They were slightly crowded a little later in the evening, but not excessively so. The service here was a little more curt than that at Roasberg, but they got the job done. I had a slice of berry flavored cake and a cup of decaf coffee since it was a little later in the evening. As soon as I saw Fazer's exterior and went inside, I knew that it would be a little more expensive. It's your job to restrain yourself and not treat it like a restaurant with a series of courses, instead opting for a hot drink and something sweet or savory. If the service was a little more upbeat and the prices were slightly more reasonable, it would get 5 stars from me. However, with what I drank and ate being good and with this being such a unique experience, it easily gets 4 stars. I'd gladly return if in this city again and I recommend visiting this landmark coffeehouse.

Sävy was a short walk, and the coffee shop I found that opened the earliest. Though it's listed as being open at 7:30, they actually open at 8am. I showed up at 7:47, and happily waited the extra 13 minutes until they invited me in. (What else am I going to fucking do with 13 minutes?). I ordered a breakfast combo that included a croissant, granola/yogurt bowl, and upgraded my coffee drink to a double cappuccino. The barista asked me what perfume I was wearing because apparently I smelled good. I remarked that it may have been the woman ahead of me, but it happened to be the dude's girlfriend, so he was pretty sure it wasn't her. I wasn't wearing a fragrance but the air BnB had a Linden Blossom bath wash...anyways. I was feeling good about smelling good even though I felt like shit. I digress I was stupid hungry, so I demolished that croissant before my coffee drink and granola bowl was ready. It was buttery, flaky, fresh and delicious. "On point" as the kids say. I was too tired to remember to order oat milk with my coffee, so I drank it with whole milk. It was rich, and chocolately like I like my coffee drinks. I might pay for the whole milk later, but it couldn't be worse than the airline food I had yesterday. So fuck it. The granola bowl with yogurt was legit. Breakfast here just hits different. The presentation was great, and it had the perfect ratio of fruit, honey, and cinnamon. I had a little more time to kill so I ordered another single cappuccino with oatmilk this time (internally convincing myself it would offset the whole milk drink) it was also delicious. Additionally, they have a pretty dope music playlist, wi-fi, and cool art on the walls. I'll be coming back every morning until my stay here is up. Kiitos, Sävy

A very fitting city for having coffee with desserts and snacks - 1 of 2…read more I found photos for this business - Roasberg, a coffeehouse - from my 3 day "layover" here. I felt I could put a review together for having visited this location. Before arriving to Helsinki, you make a short list of typical area food, good deals on food, and coffeehouses. Of the latter, there are easily 5 to 10 coffeehouses and you might not visit all of them. Roasberg ought to make that list and it's one of the easiest ones to visit because the main train station - brace yourself: Rautatientori - and this coffeehouse are visually connected, albeit some two blocks apart. Some of the trams that pass in front of the station round a bend in front of Roasberg. I just needed something to eat to tide me over ... or not. I'd decide on whether to eat more later on. I went in to Roasberg and selected a panino like sandwich with deli meats from those in the glass case and drip coffee (which they bill as filtered coffee). Everything was fine. This Nordic country is possibly the easiest to visit because the Euro is their currency. That said, it's quick to deduce from the menu board that the prices are fair. The service was a little perfunctory. However, that's standard because there is no effusiveness anywhere in and around Helsinki, so customer service experiences are actually very predictable. I was almost going to go with 3 stars for Roasberg but then looked ... and looked ... at some of the ornate slices of chocolate cake others had bought and of which they shared photos. I know that that would push my experience to 4 stars, perfunctory service or otherwise. With waterways, evergreens, overcast skies, Nordic DNA, and a lower decibel level than in the south of Europe, the vibe can run a lot like that of Seattle. With such ingredients, you can join others savoring the quiet experience of a Finnish coffeehouse, and possibly being depressed to go along with that, and turn those lemons into lemonade by being a happy camper doing this. I wouldn't say Roasberg is stellar, but it is reliable. Moreover, if coffee and a dessert, or a sandwich, is what you have in mind, Roasberg is so close to the transportation hub of the Finnish capital that it's a sensible stop to make.
