Dr. Makrum has excellent bedside manner, speaks to the children in a relatable manner, while being very gentle and calm as she explains what she is going to do. Our daughter loves going to see her and always asks when her next appointment is. Recently, our daughter chipped her tooth while playing on the playground. It was a Saturday and the practice was closed but we left a message on the emergency line. Within minutes, Dr. Makrum was calling, asking what happened, having us text photos and then recommended a course of treatment at an emergency dentist. She stayed in contact until the tooth was repaired and then had us come in the following week to inspect the work. You won't find a better pediatric dentist!!

I'm so glad I tried again with Lil Sunshine because I often have to jump through hoops to get services for my son. We waited for an appointment for 2 weeks, the child's teeth hurt, there are two of them, but the doctor decided that the extraction should be done under anesthesia. We always extracted teeth, and my son was always worried and cried, but other doctors always tried to calm him down. In this clinic, the doctor did not even try to calm the child down. I am horrified! Wasted time, the child is upset. He cries that they did not extract it, because the pain bothers him.

The entire front office staff including Jenn, Chasity, Tanesha, and Ashely are incredibly warm and helpful in keeping me organized and knowing what to expect ahead of time. No surprises here. Dr. Brattain and his wonderful hygienists are kind, thoughtful, and never make you feel like they're in a rush to get to another patient (and they're really gentle on my sensitive teeth too!). Even so, I've had to have a root canal done twice (2nd time they decided not to 'save' the tooth ...a lot of lost money, time and too much PAIN), each involving going to St. Petersburg for Endodontist. In looking at the cost(s) of replacing two teeth that were pulled BOTH estimates exceeded the cost of having this done in Indiana but dental insurance won't cover 'out of state'!?! The final straw has been that a crown put on about five years ago has been cracked for about a year and Dr. B said that it didn't fall w/i my insurance for GE to have to fix it (i.e. 'under warranty'). Instead they want me to pay for a new crown!? I see with my new dental insurance that a crown should last at LEAST 5 years, this one has not. Why should I trust this dentist to f*** it up again??? I've now changed insurers but will probably have to wait a year before having the crown replaced by a (HOPEFULLY) more competent dentist. In the meantime, the fact this with the cracked base keeps catching food which is starting to cause gum issues that require subsequent treatment. Aggggh! Wish I'd switched dentists 3 years ago!

I was told at another dentist that my son would have to be put to sleep for his tooth extraction and that I would not be able to go back with him before he went to sleep. Needless to say I was a little taken back seeing as my kiddo is only 2 and a half years old. I decided to get a 2nd opinion and came here. I was so impressed with the staff and Dr. Davis and her great bedside manner. Dr. Davis was extremely patient and reassuring, explaining that she would be able to extract the tooth using only local anesthesia and that it was not necessary for my son to be put to sleep for such a short and simple procedure. The price was $279 for the visit but they will push you to sign up for their membership. Which is essentially a subscription program to lock in monthly revenue. All this fine it is a business. I don't fault a business for trying to be profitable but we were there specifically for a lip tie procedure for our daughter. We have a dentist that accepts our insurance but Maggie was recommended by our pediatrician because we were told she specializes in lip tie procedures. As soon as her staff realized that we were not going to be monthly reoccurring revenue but one time customers the $279 turned into over $600. It was one excuse after another. This is an emergency exam, plus a preliminary exam, plus the actual lip tie procedure..... Keep in mind the 2 exams that were over $450 took 5 minutes in a chair with no equipment other than Dr. Maggie's hands and a iphone to snap a couple pictures. I paid it out of pocket because I wanted to do what I thought was best for my daughter. We realized how incredibly deceptive this entire experience was the next day when we saw our dentist. He apparently knows Dr. Maggie because they went to dental school together. She flat out asked us where we were currently going and knew that our dentist accepted our insurance and performed lip tie procedures but purposely omitted that information while racking up the bill by 220% from the original price we were told by the front desk. When we told our Dr. how much we paid for the procedure he was furious. He said 30 minute exam plus lip tie procedure should not even come close to the price we paid. In our experience they didn't care about our financial situation or the well being of our family only how much money they could get from us in that one visit.

I had been planning to try to make it through until Monday before calling the office so I didn't have to bother the dentist over the weekend, but as of Sunday things had gotten to the point that they were intolerable even by a tough mama like me - so I broke down and called the office, expecting to reach either an answering service who would put the dentist in contact with me or a voicemail message that provided emergency contact information - but no. Patients are told that if they have a dental emergency, they need to call 911. Seriously??? I've never heard of such a thing in all my 37 years. I'm not about to go pay thousands of dollars at a local ER when they couldn't even actually treat me, ESPECIALLY considering that this problem was caused by a dentist's office - THEY need to be the ones to absorb the cost of fixing this! I know it was caused by my Thursday visit to Smile Design, too, because the hygienist remarked how healthy my teeth and gums were during the cleaning, and noted that my always healthy gums had actually IMPROVED since my last visit! I hesitate to blame the hygienist herself, I've never had a problem with her before. Perhaps their tools were improperly sterilized or something, I don't know. What I do know is that this has been the worst dental experience of my life and this office has no emergency care available. Avoid this place, find another dentist who actually cares enough about his or her patients as people (not just their money) to make themself available to their patients when they need care the most. ***UPDATE*** They called me shortly after they opened today and fit me in right away. An x-ray was taken, my suspicion of an infection was confirmed, and they irrigated my mouth with an antibiotic solution. I left with a prescription for antibiotics and a referral to an oral surgeon, and they did not charge me for any of this. They handled my problem with kindness, respect, and professionalism (even taking my toddler out into the hallway and playing with him during my X-ray), so I feel much better about this office now than I did this weekend. However, the fact remains that they do not make themselves available for emergency care after hours or on weekends. If you are unconcerned about that kind of thing, you can feel comfortable going here - they will take good care of you whenever they are open. However, if you want the extra security that emergency availability provides, you should probably look elsewhere.
