When you first walk up there was a sign saying each person needs 40 oz of water We all had water bottles with us, including one 132 oz bottle, and we were simply asking about the water rule because we had visited before and never saw the 40 oz sign. Instead of explaining it politely, the older lady at the front desk immediately came off rude and dismissive. She questioned whether our bottle was actually full and said things like, "Do you not see the sign outside?" and "Are you not from the desert?" Not everyone is from the desert ,we drove a long way to visit and were genuinely just asking a question. After we paid $15 per person, my dad jokingly commented that the water rule was probably also a way to make money. It wasn't said aggressively or offensively at all , he's a sales manager, so his mind naturally thinks that way. But she completely snapped and told us we could get thrown out for saying that and that we needed to basically watch our mouths. The reaction felt extremely unnecessary and honestly like a power trip threatening to not be able to hike after we have already paid and for just making a comment about water . We fully understand there are rules and likely important safety reasons we had no push back behind the water policy, especially in the heat, but there's a huge difference between educating visitors respectfully and speaking to them with attitude. We walked in excited, smiling, and happy for the hike, and the interaction immediately ruined the vibes for all of us. The hike and land itself are beautiful and meaningful, which is why it's disappointing that this was our first impression. I don't think the people of the sacred land would want that kind of energy representing the experience for visitors coming for the first time. absolutely beautiful hike would go again other than the service.

Depending on which direction you take to get here from the desert, it's a good hour to hour and half up the mountain. Not too bad and the scenery makes it worth it. The town itself isn't that big. It's more scattered with housing as majority is outside of town while you have the inns, Airbnb and cabins that tends to be walking distance from the main circle. Right in the heart or the circle is where the massive pine trees are located. The focal points and where it's like their massive Christmas tree during the holidays. Everything is around the area and pretty much all walking distance from each other. It's mainly street parking where you can find it. They do have some lots here and there but be careful as some maybe only for hotel guest. You could spend the weekend for a nice calming recharge, camp overnight or a day trip. All is worth it and quite nice. Minus the camping for me, no camping bones in me. There's loads of fun and cute souvenirs shops. Mom and pops places run by locals. A good amount of restaurants both for breakfast as well lunch and dinner. Hours varies for all of them. We like popping in at new places and seeing what's it's all about. The shopping varies as it's not a designer destination type of shopping. More local and independent designers. We did notice a lot of fun vintage shops. Some are quite quirky and fun with bits and bobs while another was more of the higher ends thrifting. Like quite pricey for some things but hey, people love vintage and don't mind paying for it. Theres loads of other things to do and see. A few tasting rooms with wineries all walking distance from each other. Don't miss out on Idyllwild Brewery, it's a must try as we loved it our first time. They have a small movie theater right on the strip. You could spend the day starting off with a meal for brunch, walking through town and just enjoying the area. Different stores and restaurants does have a live band happening so it's nice to just sit and enjoy the music. Also you have to meet the mayor of town, the famous mayor max the golden retriever. There tends to be loads of people waiting at the certain spots for him to arrive. The cutest photo op with the furry mayor. Plus while chatting with some of the locals, we found out about first Friday which happens here. An event where the locals and visitors are invited to enjoy various activities and local businesses. A nice way to spend the day. It's a small town that has a lot of characters and charm. Worth checking out even for the day.

He was slated to make an appearance at 2 pm at Woolley's and there was a large crowd to welcome him. You can't walk a block without coming across dogs of all pedigree. There are water bowls out in a few places for them too. Last time we checked out the shops on the left side of the street. This time we explored the right side, parked by the Antique Store and I enjoyed a shopping spree in practically every shop I entered. Even found a gift for grand nephew's newborn- a woodland mobile and a puppy bootie. Grandkids will be getting omiyage from here too. Doc found a nice cute plant to take home. Hubs, Doc and birthday pup waited mostly outside. We had 3 hours before our cabin was ready. We even had lunch from a hot dog truck since the Bakery's Grill was backed up. Clean chilled mountain air, blue skies, gorgeous clouds, hikers, couples and families with their four legged fur babies, very relaxed atmosphere:

Even if you're able to park somewhere safe and securely (like Jack in the Box), you can't go fully onto the physical property itself - but you can get a great pic or look. From what I know the Spider Bug was built by Robert Miner who owned and ran the Hole in the Wall repair shop for several decades from the 70s to the 1990s according to old articles in the Desert Sun - I believe it's still home and/or property to his daughter and family. Not sure if they reside permanently here, but always be respectful and mindful of people's homes as well as private property - especially home to an iconic Spider Bug.

The vendors are friendly and most offer samples of their fair - especially ciders and the types of apples being grown on-site. Although I was skeptical at first, after purchasing some of the apple varieties I freely concede that there's a noticeable taste difference between store-purchased produce and those freshly picked at the Oak Glen orchards - though they do cost a bit more. By the way, you don't need to pick your own, but it is a fun option! Be aware that weekend parking can be a headache during their busy season, but if you want the full experience it's the recommended time of the week to visit; however, if you're retired (like me), a weekday trip has less crowds while still allowing the shopping and eating opportunities without the long lines. Since it's a tourist venue, things aren't real cheap, but who can resist the sites and bakery smells wafting through the air? Oak Glen is all things apple - and it makes a wonderful day trip for those in the San Bernardino, Los Angeles, and Riverside counties.
