This season I Know A Guy was buack in the Valley after having been gone for a couple of seasons…read more The location we stopped at was supporting a local high school cheer leading squad's hopes to go to the national competion. A noble cause I suppose. However the pricing policies at I Know A Guy have not improved and in fact have gotten worse. In the case of 500 gram fountains they were at least 100% higher than any other fireworks stand in the are for the same product. (Amazing fountain from Cutting Edge Fireworks, sold in almost every fireworks stand in the east valley, average price; $55.00. At I Know A Guy; $119.99) In a few cases 125% higher! That is un believable. What's more, in the area of very small fireworks they had a No.3 cone which has a burn time of about 8 seconds priced at $2.00! Other stands sell such things at 2 for $1.00. As to the comment left in a review by a different reviewer, that they met him at the stand after the seaon had finished and sold him everything he needed, I certainly hope this isn't true. Selling fireworks outside the restricted time periods in the state of Arizona is Illegal!

I attended a play at Mesa Arts Center. Due to an incredible stroke of luck, the Dia de los Muertos…read moreFestival was happening right next to the venue, so I checked it out after the show. There are a few things I look for in a festival and this one crosses off all of the boxes. First, ease of parking. There is plenty of free parking on the street surrounding the festival. I found a spot a few minutes away by foot without much effort. Second, free admission. This is the case with this festival. Third, entertainment. I was there for about an hour and some change and saw three different performances: singing, dancing, and a cultural ritual. I have always been fascinated by Dia de los Muertos, a celebration of death, so it was so cool to see this holiday celebrated through song, dance, and ritual. Not to mention the beautiful outfits! Awesome to take part in this from a cultural perspective. Fourth, the food. Since I had dinner plans, I only wanted a snack. I hit pay dirt with a churro, one of my favorite desserts and one that I haven't had in quite a while. If you're looking for something a little more hearty than dessert, there were 15 or so food trucks/food stands. A nice selection that I'll definitely check out the next time I attend this festival. Fifth, the beverages. There were a good number of options, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. I went with a cantaloupe agua fresca for $5, which I found reasonably priced for the size (it was large) and the venue (a festival). Beyond all that I mentioned above, there were a ton of vendors selling everything under the sun including art, clothing, pottery, candles, souvenirs, and more. There also wasn't a long line anywhere I went. The beauty of a festival is learning about different cultures. I came away from this festival with that appreciation. And also an appreciation for how well planned and well run this event is.
