We had the Moussaka (eggplant & ground beef casserole, $7). The Tiropita (cheese pie, $4). And for dessert, Loukoumades (Greek donut holes, $5), Karithopita (spiced walnut cake, $3), Kourabiedes (shortbread cookies with powdered sugar, $1), and Melamakarona (spice cookie, $1). My absolute favorite was the Karithopita (spiced walnut cake) because it was so incredibly moist! The runners ups would be the Kourabiedes (shortbread cookies with powdered sugar, and the Melamakarona (spice cookie). Examples of other dishes included, Saganaki (flaming cheese dish), Souvlaki (grilled pork), Dolmathes (stuffed grapevine leaves), etc. There were many other desserts too. Oh and there's tons of parking, entrance fee is $3, and there's tons of food, sweets, coffee, and alcohol to choose from! The ones I listed are just a few, love the variety here! The most time you really could spend here is about 90 minutes. Most of the greek dances occur in circle form and that is entertaining to watch for a few minutes, but the food is why we are all here. Oh, on the website, it is 2-1 admission, so two for three bucks was a good entry deal. My favorite food there was the $7, flaming cheese served on a pita. OPA! We tried just about everything and the Moussaka slightly edged out the Greek Lasagna in the main dish competition. The rice pilaf and beans were average, but the spinach pie was flaky and excellent. Finally, the deserts are famous in Green culture, but the Baklava wasn't the best at this festival. There were so many desserts we had to buy the $15 assorted package. The best one was the spiced Walnut cake and Baklava sundae (only pieces of Baklava). The powdered sugar cookie was messy, but probably will try to Lokunado's next year - fried dough with honey.

Flavors of the West delivers some of the best local restaurants in the area each year, in an effort to educate our neighbors about all the great options we have out West- so maybe more will hang out here to eat, drink, and play instead of driving into Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, or Chandler to have their fun. There's plenty of amazing places to enjoy out here.. But, Flavors is unique. The detail around the festival is appreciated. The music is always good. The local chefs are usually the ones behind the booth, so you can get up and close to how they prepare their food, what they use, etc.. The lines can get long, so get there early so you have a chance to try as many places as you can. The restaurants all participate free of charge, but they have some steep costs to bring out their staff, equipment, and food to provide samples to Flavors patrons. For some, this might be their very first time participating in an event like this, so it's hard to judge year to year how consistent the options will be. But, it's nice to try new places and see what's new in the West Valley. The event gives back to charity. Matter of fact, 100% of the event proceeds benefit local charities in need. The organizers are all volunteers, and choose to host this event each year to bring the community together for a celebration of food, music, and friendship. The host, The Honey Foundation, is a home-grown charity that promotes Kindness across the World. They provide Kindness Education for K-12 students here in Arizona and across the United States and have already made a significant impact in decreasing disciplinary action in schools. There is a small entry fee but I don't mind helping to support the University's work I think it's $5 for seniors. Of course covid has changed everything so you need to check in on the Is hours with the website. There It's very accessible although it's not really a paved ADA wheelchair accessibility A beach wheelchair might do fine if someone was helping to push. It's a gravel trail so seniors that are mobile should have no problem. Families with children should have no problem. It's a little more than a quarter mile down the trail. They seem to be relying on the audio tour inside and outside though I believe it's posted on spotify. It actually makes me a little sad that they're not relying on volunteers or students as much anymore. It seems to be a trend and it's probably related to covid possibly, to modern Digital Culture rather than human interaction culture that I and my generation come from. I'm also sure like everyone else in the service industry it's urban industry they're finding it hard to get volunteers and employees. It reminds me of the self service lines in grocery stores and retail now, It's all about speed and efficiency rather than service. There was an archeological student from the University of Arizona, who was doing some kind of trail sweep who I naturally engaged in a conversation with, she had a wealth of information about the site and she enjoyed talking about it as well as some of the frustrations of trespasser's and worrying about artifact theft and vandalism. There was no one else around so we talked for 45 minutes. When I asked her about her future in archeology she felt that it was probably going to be in museum work cause that was the only place that you could possibly get a salary if you weren't teaching. I always enjoy listening and learning from bright young people about their passions. The rock art was produced by Archaic (before 150 CE,) Hohokam (1 - 1450 CE,) and Patayan (ca. 900-800 CE) cultures. It focuses on the rock art found a short way from the building on an outcropping of basalt boulders found along a quarter mile trail facing southeast. Unfortunately I wasn't smart enough to ask the student about differentiating from the different the different time periods of rockheart and asking her to show me some examples. I really recommend a visit especially for families and seniors of a certain age or for initial cultural markings experience. It's will also help you get oriented to the indigenous culture of the Phoenix area. The museum and interpretive centre discusses the site and its petroglyphs as well as tools and pottery associated with the site and Hohokam culture. Archaeology of the site includes features aside from the rock art which are described in the museum, but are not accessible to visitors. These include the remains of a pit house with middens and cooking areas, and the foundations of two masonry rooms top the outcropping where the majority of petroglyphs were found. It's heartening to see that this site helped to preserve an acreage of desert from encroaching development, the fragility of such sites will only increase with with increased tourism, and they do there best to manage it. A small number of rock art pieces were actually moved to their current location when the nearby dam was built. (All moved pieces are so identified.) The preserve is the result of a partnership by a number of organizations, including the Army Corps of Engineers, Maricopa Flood Control District and Arizona State University. The site is protected and operated by Arizona State University.

There was plenty of parking and we found a spot as soon as we pulled in. There was so many doggies, little ones, big ones, fluffy ones, hairless ones. It was doggie heaven for us! Lol there were a few food vendors and my daughter made a beeline for the Kona ice truck. There was a lot of rescues and pups there. I think it would make it better next year if there were more vendors. Other vendors being added would bring in more people and more potential adopters. It was a good time though and we will be back next year to check it out!

It was still pretty fun though. There were lots of free samples and dogs for adoption, including akita, chihuahua, and pug rescues. Dogs of all shapes and sizes were there, and everyone, 4 legged and 2 legged, was very friendly. :) Some notable vendors were Blue Buffalo and Honest Kitchen. I also talked to a lovely lady who helps run a rescue that trains dogs for pet-assisted children's therapy. Hopefully next year there will be more vendors and maybe food options will be available. Another suggestion would be to have signs directing people where to go if you happen to park at one of the farther lots.
