Believe me, because of business I stayed here for over six months. One thing that Jason will not do is cook to a price,all ingredients are fresh so expct to pay a reasonable cost for this. Perhaps Qypers from some parts of the country will still think the prices cheap but you will be surprised by the standards. So if it's business or pleasure (they do have a Four Poster) that takes you this way then book in and rest awhile in comfort, but do book ahead as they do get full both in the restaurant and in the hotel.

Just outside of Stretton, the Dovecliff Hall Hotel sits in its own substantial grounds, and is accessed by a tree lined lane. The building itself has an impressive grandeur around it, and its feels like you're going somewhere special. We had gone for lunch, arriving slightly early, we were shown through to our table in an impressive conservatory, with a high ceiling. Bathed in midday light, it had a magnificent view of the garden around, mature cedar trees and lavender lined pathways, idyllic. The tables themselves were large round affairs, lots of space between them, and impeccably laid with silver plated cutlery. There were two different lunch menus, the standard menu and the Table D'Hote which was a set price for three courses and coffee. We went for the latter, only three choices per course. For starters there was a dish of seared salmon, but my wife went for the slices of melon and I went for the warm courgette and cheese tart, both light dishes, packed with flavour. For mains there was a vegetarian option (aubergine bake), but my wife went for the fillet of rainbow trout on crushed new potatoes and tomatoes, in a light cream sauce, again a dish packed with perfectly complimenting flavours, and perfect for a light lunch. I had the chicken in a barbecue sauce, with polenta wedges and rocket, it was alright, but the barbecue taste dominated. There was a nice pace to the meal, not too rapid, and no inordinate wait, the staff were excellent, unobtrusive, but friendly. Desserts wise, they were actually more impressive than they sounded on the menu, the chocolate fondant with the poached pears, was lovely, looked heavy, but was surprisingly light. My wife's red berry parfait with raspberry sauce, was equally light and flavoursome. We retired to the bar area for coffee and petit fours, a good way to end the meal. The Dovecliff does look a bit tired in places, but the standard of the food and the general ambiance is difficult to match; I don't think it will be long before we return!

Situated in a very accessible rural location, on the south-eastern fringe of the Peak District National Park in Derbyshire, the hall is family run and you feel it. Attentive, without ever being over the top, with each of the 8 rooms individual in style and feel. A case of take your pick! The venue doubles as a hotel day by day and I'd recommend it to anyone who is passing through The Peak District or spending time in or around Chatsworth House.

It's one of a few houses in a tiny village in the Peak District and the perfect place to stay if you want to go for a lovely pub meal at The George. That's exactly what we did. The Manor is lived in by a run by a couple who are lovely and seem to really treasure the ability to give people comfort. We were met by the lady of the house who offered us gin and tonics or coffees before showing us round the house and the gorgeous garden in which they serve afternoon tea and play croquet if the weather is nice! The bedroom was large and luxurious with a very comfortable bed but no television. The bathroom was separate but was private to us and included a really large bath. Breakfast was served at whatever time we requested and was several courses and very, very yummy. Much recommended if you fancy a trip to the Peak District or just somewhere to stop on a trip from North to South. Would totally recommend it.

There are plenty of pubs, restaurants and coffee shops nearby and the Lichfield Cathedral and Train station are just a 5 minute walk. Spotlessly clean, the rooms are big and comfortable. Every room has a Nespresso machine and the milk frother. They even leave fresh milk and water in the mini fridge. A full English breakfast comes with your stay. Our first room was on the street side and very noisy, but they were able to move us the next day. Also, check your keys before you leave. Our front door key didn't work and we had call the owner late at night to let us in. Yes, that was interesting and something I can laugh about now.

Before this, the ancient hostelry had been pushed and pulled in every direction imaginable as the brewery rebuilt, remodelled and refurbished what had previously been the best pub in Sutton without question. Yes, in hindsight, they should have left well alone but the pub is now doing pretty well for itself despite all the interference. The beer is always good and the food is probably even better. It may not be the classiest thing to have noticed, but this place does the best pub chips in Sutton and possibly Birmingham. Even its disenfranchised former regulars are now willing to come back! The pub is committed to the local live music scene if that's you're thing but it can get pretty noisy here of a weekend. However, I prefer to take advantage of the boozer's excellent juke box. It may be the only one left in Sutton, but that doesn't mean they're complacent. The juke box is well stocked and has everything you could want to set the tone of any drinking occasion. But despite the impact on the site's fundamental character, it remains, even with a decent food menu and live music, a drinker's pub; attracting regulars who remember the good old days, a post-work crowd from neighbouring sites on High Street and those looking for nightlife a bit more cheerful than spit and sawdust or endlessly replicated chain banality. Its on-the-edge-of-town location is another appeal for those who feel their days of rubbing shoulders with teens on alcopops are behind them.
