Went on a Valentines date here and can i say... we were BEYOND impressed. I have lived by the alexandria area my whole life and JUST discovered this hidden gem! We were sat immediately, our server Chelsey was one of the best servers we have ever been served by in all our years of dining. We ordered the pulled pork mac & cheese special, the food came out in a good time frame and it was the best meal we've had eating out in such a long time! Eating here was a relatively unpleasant experience for me. The worst part was the server. They were tense and absent. They rushed us when they needed something, but then took forever to do basic service tasks like fill empty water cups and bring napkins. They weren't helpful when it came to the menu and didn't explain what came with meals (for example, one meal came with complimentary salad bar and we didn't know that). Any time we politely asked for something it really seemed like we were inconveniencing them (it's helpful to keep in mind that it wasn't super busy at the time we were there). It made the entire meal awkward and frustrating. When it comes to the food, the onion rings and cheese curds came out really hot and they were perfect. I'd never had a popover before, but I really enjoyed these! They had a nice hint of cinnamon in them. As for my entree, I got the brisket sandwich and it was REALLY dry. Amazing food! It's a whole different experience ordering food that you may usually order other places and for the first time in a long time the food was real. Ordered the spinach artichoke dip and it was made to perfection and paired with the toast was a match made in heaven. My boyfriend ordered burnt ends for the appetizer and they melted in your mouth ... super tender, flavor was spot on. For my meal the ribs were amazing and I can't even begin to describe the joy I experienced with my first bite into the pineapple coleslaw. Pricing is good, I was honestly surprised it didn't cost more. Ate outside on the patio and enjoyed some live music. Would definitely come here again when in the area. read more

Went to the Depot Bar and Grill in Alexandria for my father-in-law's birthday. We had a decent size group (5 adults, two kids ages 4&6) and overall had a nice time. I got the Half rack of ribs and side of fries. Very good! And the meal came with a salad bar (which was decent) and a "popover" (which was delicious-- order more of those!). Unfortunately, we did not have the best service with our waitress (might have been an off day). She just seemed very over us and especially the kids. So-- maybe not the best place to bring kids! read more

The drinks came quickly but the food took a bit of time and our drinks during dinner took a while. I can only imagine how tough it is with staff levels. We had spinach artichoke dip to start which we all enjoyed. We each had various sandwiches or wraps for lunch. The French fries and tater tots were crispy and plentiful. The boxcar brisket sandwich was fine, not outstanding. The burger, chicken avocado sandwich and garlic Parmesan chicken wrap that my companions had were also decent. My husband and I took our son there for ribs last Friday as they were the special. My husband and I were there a couple weeks ago for the ribs and they were fantastic, but last Friday the salad bar had not been intended to, and the salad was old, the ribs were cold and not even slightly warm and very tough. They were not tough because they're smoked. We got some really bad cuts of meat. The manager came out and gave me a lesson on smokers which I told her that my son-in-law smokes meat all the time and I do understand smoked meats. I sent my ribs back and ordered a small personal pizza. I ordered the pizza after they said they were taking the ribs off the bill. They took five dollars off of the bill. My potato was black on the bottom and had hard spots throughout, the salad bar was old, and the service was lacking as they were training people in that day right in the dining room. It was not busy or as busy as it was a couple weeks ago and I don't understand why we were neglected so bad. I don't think we'll ever be back again! We were raving about it and gave it a second chance and it was a flop a total flop! We really wish we would not have gone there, and it was like a slap in the face getting five dollars off of our bill. That's terrible! So that means the ribs cost five bucks for them to make. Just stopped in while on a day trip exploring resort options in the Alexandria area. The Depot was recommended by the efficient and personable Alexandria visitor center staff. We sat on the outside deck which offered a nice view of the lake. It seemed to be a good idea until the flies arrived. Unfortunately, once they discovered our table, along with the guests around us, it was impossible to enjoy even the best food...which we soon learned was not being served at the Depot Express. It took more than 20 minutes to receive our simple order (Prime Burger with a cup of broccoli/cheese soup and a Chicken Salad) which seemed odd as there was only one other table (2 p.p.) awaiting food. My burger was "very well" done (vs. the medium rare I ordered)...I would have been very happy with "medium" but no such luck. The soup was O.K. but barely warm. My guest's Chicken Salad was fine and the size was good. Overall the food and service (friendly but very slow to bring/return the check) were almost average but the fly situation made it a miserable experience. Another customer pointed out that perhaps doing a better job cleaning the floor and areas around the table would help and I couldn't disagree. Generally, the place just wasn't very clean (beginning with the front door and ladies room) and it's in bad need of a facelift. The overall experience was disappointing and I can't help but think there are plenty of local restauranteurs who would relish the chance to take advantage of the lake view and create a better experience for local folks and visitors as well. That said, I'm sure there are better options in a nice town like Alexandria. Take my word for it and skip the Depot Express and check out the other options. read more

To start off I'd like to state that I'm only giving this review 2 stars because the food was decent. We arrived at the restaurant for a late lunch was told they could accommodate our party of 10, but that it would have to be in their upstairs area as they didn't have room for us downstairs. We agreed and the hostess went upstairs and started to prepare the area. After we were seated the hostess left and we expected the wait staff to come upstairs to take our drink order but after 15 minutes nobody had shown. One of our party members went and asked the hostess to please send the wait staff up us. Still nobody came. We waited another 15 minutes (way longer than we ever should have to!!) and then another one of our party members went and told the hostess that if someone didn't come up soon we were leaving. FINALLY a waitress showed up! You could tell she wasn't happy to take our drink order. We were already upset so we told her that we were ordering drinks and food at the same time as at that point it had been 40 minutes. Drinks came, she couldn't remember who had what. Then we waited another 25 minutes for food. She complained about having to keep going up the stairs every time she came to give us something. The food was delicious but the service was terrible! Then on the way out you could see the waitress and the hostess glaring at us and talking about our group. Had they said we'd have to wait an hour to be served right away instead of just shoving us upstairs and forgetting about us we would have been fine with that. My folks used to frequent the Depot as it is close to their home, had good pizza, and a lake view from the patio. Over the past year the food has been hit or miss. Last week five of us (all adults) came in around 9pm for a late dinner. No one greeted us, but the dining area didn't say closed. We sat down, and after several minutes were told we'd have to move into the bar to be served. Members of our party would have had a hard time hearing conversation in a bar atmosphere, so we explained that and asked to be served in the dining room. They declined, so we went to Pike and Pint on the other end of town and had great food and service. It was disappointing, but Pike and Pint has outdoor dining with great ambiance and is more reliable, so it will likely become the new go-to. read more

The outdoor dining experience is worthy of note! Lovely lake view and wonderful lush wall of ivy make for great back drop to food. Our server Nate was on spot. Polite friendly and the right amount of wit. Didn't over sell menu but didn't have to. Food was nothing special. OMG where should I start. popovers were over cooked and then steamed in microwave. Tasted like wet bread. Ordered the whiskey steak medium and it came out like gray rubber. When it was sent back, a much smaller piece of steak replaced it and was just as bad. Wild rice side dish was like eating rubber cricket legs. Garlic mashed potatoes were so dry. Food was awesome. Burger is made of in house ground beef. The crackers and cheese dip were good but tasted like the cheese dip had horseradish in it-which I don't like. I wish that would have been specified on the menu. Great story and history behind the depot and had a historical feel which is what we were looking for. Beautiful outlook over lake Agnes. Lunch today at Depot Express was a huge disappointment. I got the lunch special which was a "fish basket". The walleye filet was way over cooked and chewy. The sweet potato fries that I upgraded to were the only good part of the meal. The waiter NEVER refilled drinks. When I told him that most of the walleye was too dry and chewy, he just stood there and said nothing. I can not recommend this restaurant at all. Love the Depot. I'm new to town but this is becoming our regular stop. We like the Ribs special on Sunday night - real deal for a rack of ribs. We brought my 70-year-old mother for her birthday and were pleasantly surprised to see that they give a 10-cent discount for every year of age so her ribs were practically free!! We also brought a birthday cake for her and the waitress, Andrea, did an AWESOME job of timing the bringing of the cake, fully lit with candles and singing. Really wonderful night for the whole family. The staff is friendly. The specials are amazing - Monday night Pizza, Wed night burger and fries for $3! Of course, our fave is the ribs on Sunday. They have bar dining and dining room options with lots of TVs in the bar area. Good drinks, Happy Hour specials and darts and pool if you're into gaming. Wow, we had a great lunch here. I was surprised by the negative reviews and even steered away by a few of the locals. Nevertheless, we came here because of the nice location, outside seating, and their supposedly great food. Well we were not disappointed. The inside of the building is pretty dimly lit, old, dusty, but I think that's part of what gives it character. It's an old train station from a hundred years ago (It's been remodeled, don't worry). But we didn't really walk around the inside too mcuh besides noticing those things. The outside patio is nice, it's a little uneven, but has some nice hanging planters and stuff like that. Has a veiw of Lake Agnes across the street and the bike trail. I ordered a philly type sandwich with prime rib and au jus. It was awesome! One of the better dip sandiwches I've had. We ordered the special which was An 8 oz New York strip. We both ordered it cooked medium. When we got it they were both totally over cooked. Not even a hint of pink. The waitress finally came to check on our meals at least 15 minutes later. We told her both our steaks were way over cooked. We showed her how over cooked they were. Her response was that she "would tell the kitchen". There was no offer of getting us a different steak or compensation on the price. She did offer us a free dessert. Which we declined. There is no way we would roll the dice on a free dessert after we complained about our meal. But we got the Hawaiian pizza I was sceptical at first but the Canadian bacon was chopped up so fine I never even noticed or tasted it! The prices are pretty ridiculous not going to lie hence the 4 stars but it's at a good location across the street from the lake. Has nice outdoor seating, good bar inside too. read more
