Who is going to give a rating of less than 5 stars to a fire department, especially a volunteer…read morefire department? Next to the police, I can't think of anyone else who puts their lives on the line daily for their fellow citizens. Their bravery and dedication are unmatched. Given that I've never been involved in a situation regarding a fire (thank God!), I'm sure that if it someday happens (and my luck is usually so bad that I keep thinking it might), I have no doubts that the Liberty Corner Fire Department would be as responsive and zealous as anyone could humanly expect. No, I'm writing about them more because this is the place where I now vote. In the past, I always voted in my condo/townhouse community clubhouse, which was exceedingly convenient for me. Then it was moved to the nearby Fellowship Deaconry. Then it was moved yet again down the street to the new Liberty Corner firehouse (the Fire Department itself was started in 1910). It is indeed an impressive structure, with ample parking provided. I don't usually vote in elections for Governor, but when I heard how close this most recent contest was in NJ, evidently neck-and-neck, I felt I had to vote. Paradoxically, I don't have a lot of faith that voting necessarily equals "freedom." The nihilist in me says, "It doesn't matter who I vote for; nothing is going to change." Democrats are as beholden to their corporate donors as Republicans are. My contention is that Democrats have been selling themselves as Republican Lite ever since the days of Reagan and offer no real alternative to beleaguered voters. On the other hand, it's undeniable that if more people had come out to vote in the recent past, we might have been spared Trump, and the precipitous decline of Democracy...flawed as it might be or has been...into the brainless fascism of Trump (Il Douche- bag) and his soul-less enablers and apparatchiks. So, I came here yesterday morning, readily found a parking spot, and made my way into the wide, spacious hallway. I was directed to what appeared to be a room large enough to be a high school gym. I wasn't sure what district I was from, but I was quickly directed to the right table, where I identified myself, signed what I had to sign, and made my way to the voting booth. The process has been "modernized" but even for an aging Luddite like me, it was pretty easy to figure out. I voted straight Democrat (in the past, when the Republican party was a different animal entirely, I sometimes considered casting my vote for a Republican of integrity, but those few erstwhile Republicans have become pariahs within their own party. I guess the bottom line, for me, is that these days I consider corporate Democrats evil with a small letter "e" and Republicans evil with a capital "E!!!"). Do I think my life will dramatically improve with Sherrill at the helm? No. But I feel a little more comfortable with her in there than I would with a Trump puppet. Now if they'll only let her try to do something at least halfway progressive. And don't get me started on how they're going to try and hobble Mamdani! (He was elected in spite of the Islamic slurs and insults coming hot and heavy.) Anyway.... With the modernized system, I had no doubt about my vote (in the past, I'd sometimes wonder, being the obsessive-compulsive personality that I am, "Did I hit the right button? Did I perhaps inadvertently vote for a...gasp!...Republican!?!") No doubts with the updated system they've put into place. I voted easily and quickly, was given a "I Voted Today" sticker, and was able to make my departure in no time at all. I hope, moving forward, that they keep the voting continuing on here for at least the foreseeable future, because it's an uncomplicated, efficient process, in an easy to access location. At the Liberty Corner Fire Department, voting has been made as simple and trouble-free as possible. (Wasn't it legendary Chicago mobster Murray "the Camel" Humphreys who famously said, "Vote early and vote often."?) Unlegendary working-stiff and nihilistically inclined Yelp reviewer Edward T. says, "Just vote! Do it!"
