*Holiday Review* One cannot and should not miss the light display. The city of Denver is still celebrating the holidays, although without the traditional pomp and circumstance. The presentation begins promptly at 545p and lasts for 5minutes. The lights are orchestrated with holiday music and shows real well. Even on a Saturday, the crowd was minimal so we had a good view from Civic Center Park. A nice way to bring in a little cheer to your evening. We were in Denver for NYE and I saw that this building lights up at night. I saw some really cool photos of it prior to coming to Denver, so I made sure to visit during the day and the evening. During the day it was a cool building, we weren't able to go inside and tour because it was the holidays but at night it transforms into a beauty covered in lights! I guess everyone's rating of Denver's City and County Building will depend on what their experience there was. There's a 1 star review from someone who didn't think she was treated fairly in small claims court. There's a 3 star review from someone who thought the staff wasn't working hard enough and the lines were too long. Me? I think the old place is lovely. On occasion I show up there for work and to me it's one of the most beautiful buildings in Denver, and usually a joy to visit. Here are some lesser seen perspectives of the building that are pretty cool. Was just there this morning when I shot them. The funniest one is probably the one in front of the entrance which implies that you are most welcome to bring firearms and other weapons into the building, but just not from 7:30-5 M-F:). My favorite happens to be the one looking down the hall with the reflections of the lights on the floor and not a soul in sight, even though it was the middle of the work day. I went to the County Courthouse this week to file a name change petition and it went really well. I know courthouses can be intimidating. The building itself is beautiful and the park and the Capital are right there as well. When you arrive you do go through a metal detector for security. I had been emailing with Jordan at the Self Help Desk Center leading up to filing. He was very helpful and always quick to respond. He checked all my paperwork to make sure it was correct before I went downstairs to file. He also went over the entire process with me which was helpful. Downstairs, in the Clerk's Office, the line moved quickly. The man at the counter was nice and quick and efficient, so was the man at the register. I have to go back a few more times during the name change process, but I am not worried about it. I had a delightful time and everything ran really smoothly. read more

One of my favorite cities to visit on biz! I just love when the industry I am in schedules a convention here. Easy to get to from NYC with direct flights to a really nice airport. Terrific hotels to stay at all within walking distance of the convention center. Free bus line to use along the 16th street mall area to hit up all the hot spots. Nice ballpark to catch a game at if the Rockies are playing. So many awesome breweries and beer bars to imbibe at. Good food too. Great beer. Great bars. Tasty spots to eat at. Sunny. Nice temps. Clean. Gotta love the higher altitude buzz when drinking all the great craft beers here. Rocky Mountain High! read more

MY 500TH REVIEW AND STILL GOING STRONG!!! For this wonderful milestone I decided to give it up to the wonderful city of Denver Colorado. They gave me the pleasure of serving jury duty, and I guess my answers must have been right on point since I was chosen to serve on a 7 person jury out of a 40 person pool. Congrats to Jenn. Although I was 50/50 about the experience, bummed that I was chosen for a week + jury trial, excited that I was able to participate in my civic duty. Without going into any of the details, I was impressed with jury process, the way the trial unfolded, and the ability to come to a consensus surrounding the case. The building is beautiful, all the people I had the pleasure of meeting were super helpful and sweet. Being the foodie I am, I was also very happy to be so close to Civic Center Eats with all the food trucks on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Always looking for the foodie angle - you know me. read more

This is a beautiful building. If you're going here for a parking/traffic ticket you probably won't take the time to notice (and I don't blame you), but if you can come back and just take a tour or look around, it's really quite nice. And FYI - you can pay your traffic ticket online now, even if you have to come into court, so no waiting in line. Handy after you've already spent too much time there waiting for the judge. read more

Biased review, I've moved here when I was 9, so it's a local but not quite native talking here. I live in LA and miss Denver because while it doesn't have quite as much going on, I can actually make it to where I want to go in Denver, no big deal. Denver has everything major cities have, just scaled down to fun size. I can have my chill house, make it in a 10$ cab downtown for music, bro bars or the deep hipster scene. I can jet out to nature, actual nature, and in just a few hours be on the best mountains in the world. I don't really even do that much, because I like my weekends spent on the night life, which is yea, isn't New York but hey, it happens, we get damn rowdy and don't pay 11$ for a corona. We leave most of pretentious formalities at the door, and I love that attitude. Things can get a little crusty, but hey that's home. Great mix of season, so many parks, cool culture and arts and some dope neighborhoods for just about anything. People are friendly, and you can move in and start your life pretty easily, especially compared to other cities. Very inclusive people. We have a nice little tech scene and strong job market, and even when people complain about rents you pay less and get more out here than most other cities. Cost of living is great and if you want to do finger painting and other hippie stuff, yea you can swing that here. Oh, we legalized it, which is dope, and while I don't want to paint everybody as a stoner, it does reflect our attitude to a degree. If you want to do something here, you're free to be you, and I love that about us. Also, go Broncos. And Red Rocks and the music scene here is wild. And mostly, Go Broncos. read more

I didn't go back at night because the area around it is quite sketchy. However, I did get to see the Senate and House in session, toured the Dome, and it was free. How many cities let you free access to a great view from the Dome, and the other benefits from the tour? Very enjoyable! read more

Denver is awesome. I came from the Northeast looking for a better, less-stresed quality of life and I found it here. Sure, rent is going up but it'll never be as high as Boston and San Francisco. Laid-back city vibes, winters that are snowy and gloriously sunny at the same time (try it! you'll love it), a brewery, dispensary or independent coffeeshop on every corner, people who bike everywhere, cowboys and hippies, the closest mountain access. Denver's idea of haute cuisine is a food truck, and its idea of haute couture is Patagonia. If that's not your idea of perfect, then I don't know what is. read more

Denver, yay! Blue skies, no more oily skin, traffic is do-able and I always felt safe. City of Denver knows how to handle snow! Lots of hiking nearby, yes it's still a "cow town" in terms of sophistication but still plenty of art and culture to feed one's brain! Riding the 16th street mall bus on a Saturday night at 7:53 pm is always entertaining. Just be sure you're not offended by profanity and questionable smells. read more

So this place has an epic story. I went on a hiking trip with three buddies to Colorado. Now I'll start this off by saying that they all like smoking weed, I do not but as we all know it is legal in Colorado. So we land at the Denver Airport and we go get a rental car. We decided we wanted to go into Denver just to look around before going to our cabin. The first thing we do after getting our car was go to a dispensary which is where they sell weed. . So we bought our weed and we smoked out. We drove down town and got out of the car and I said I wanted to go see the mint and for everyone to follow me. We walked several blocks and into a building where there are security guards. My friends asked if I was sure this was the Mint and I told them absolutely so..... they follow me in and I asked if this was the Mint..... they said no this is the courthouse. That was the first funny thing. It started to rain so we just asked if we could stay inside and look around and they said sure. I said let's take the elevator upstairs and so we took the elevator upstairs and we walk down out the elevator to the left......walked to the end of the hall and talked for a bit. My buddy then turned around and saw the sign on the wall......We were standing right in front of the Sheriff's Office. This is why I don't smoke weed. I get high and walk directly to the cops, who does that? read more

While I love the city of Denver and never wish to live anywhere else, I just had a terrible experience with a city and county worker who called my place of employment to get my boss' mailing address. I informed her that I was not at liberty to give out that information and that I would be happy to transfer her to my boss, she copped a HUGE attitude and sad "You really can't give me your work address?" I informed her that I would be happy to give our PUBLIC office address, but that she had not specified which address she needed. BTW... If she got out office number from Google, our website, etc. our office address is listed right below. And if she got our phone number from Denver County databases, we have been at this location with the same # for over 15 years. I really see no reason why she couldn't have been more resourceful. This rude woman should learn to use common sense and not to have an attitude when requesting information. She was asking ME a question, not the other way around. read more

Where do I start? I had to visit city hall this morning to pay a traffic fine. Standard stuff - I've been here many times over the course of my decade here in Denver. As I cruised through security, I set off the first alarm. Apparently the snaps on my cute, velvet, cargo skirt were a bit too much metal to NOT warrant a swipe with the wand. No worries - quick and efficiently, I was sent through. Where I set off the 2nd alarm. What alarm you ask? The alarm of the security officer who wanted to search my purse. Why, you ask? Because I apparently had a rifle shell in my darling little Coach bag. As I lifted my wallet for her to get a closer look inside, I thought to myself, "no lipgloss in court?" What? Then I saw it. Oooppps! Not to get too off track, but while visiting a restaurant last summer, which happens to be on a seedy part of Broadway, I noticed the casing on the street as we exited the restaurant, and a couple glasses of chianti prompted me to pick it up. I'd never seen a rifle shell before. This was interesting to me. Needless to say, I forgot it was in there, and 8 - 10 months went by. To add to this story, I have been to the airport, with this same bag, with this same rifle casing in pocket at least a dozen times, and have I ever been stopped in security once? You guessed it. Not once. Now, 3 officers have gathered around and all I can think is "RUN", just kidding. I am thinking, I am seriously worried about being late for court, as anyone who know me can testify, I am always late anyway, and I don't want to be fined because, I now have a great story, but a truly uncomfortable situation unfolding at the door. Finally guard #3 asks me to fill out a claim ticket, which I don't want, but I feel I have to accept or I will look suspicious. So, I take it, thinking "No way am I coming back through this door, or back to claim this "bullet", which guard #1 so graciously called it as she asked "Is that a bullet?" "Um, uh, errr. I found it on the ground. Doh!" I must sound like every other criminal in here right now. Then I get to the courtroom, which isn't actually a courtroom, it's a reception area where you are directed into a courtroom, or to a cashier. Initially, I was going into the courtroom to try and get the fine reduced, but at this point I just want out - so I go to the cashier, pay and get my receipt. 5 minutes in and out, no joke. But in that 5 minutes, I've decided I need to go claim the "bullet", because what if it was used in a crime and now my fingerprints are on it because it's been in my purse for 8 months? Yeah, I watch way too much CSI. So I go back to the security entrance and hand them my claim ticket to get my bullet. Moral of the story: City Hall=very safe, efficient and secure, DIA=hmmmm, Sherri=a little paranoid. OH, And if you haven't been to see the Christmas lights - Go! sidebar: My biggest reason for not being able to give 5 stars is the parking. It took me longer to find a space (on the street - instead of paying $11 for a lot), than it took me to actually drive downtown from my home. read more

I love Denver! I used to dislike it quite a bit--then I moved away. I moved to wretched Oklahoma City. I did it for a fleeting romance--not a good idea. My point is, I moved away and experienced a much less cultured city than Denver for almost two years. I hated every minute of it. I would find myself looking to the horizon for those gorgeous mountains all the time. They weren't there and it was quite disappointing. Denver has everything. It is smaller than some of the more famous cities in our country that I have visited. BUT! Denver has culture. We have a FANTASTIC music scene. There is always a concert going on somewhere, no matter what time of the year it is. The art scene is excellent. There are always awesome exhibits at the art museums. First Fridays on the Santa Fe art district are amazing. Our food scene is fantastic. We have excellent restaurants of any cuisine you could possibly be craving. Denver is only a small drive to the mountains where there is plenty to do--hike, camp, explore, etc. Yes, downtown has it's downsides, like horrible parking. And yes, meter maids are kind of Nazis about how long you're at your meter and how you park. If you're concerned about that, use a parking lot. But what do you expect? It's a city. You have to pay for parking or take public transit. Public transit is certainly getting a lot better. We now have the light rail going from the Denver Tech Center to downtown, out to Lakewood and Golden, and hopefully in a couple of years there will be one going to the north, possibly even up to Boulder. For those of you who are tourists, I work in the hospitality industry and hear a lot of positive and negative feedback. One of the things I frequently hear tourists saying is that we have customer service down. I have to agree with that. MOST places you will visit have excellent customer service so long as you, yourself, are not the one being rude in the first place. I have noticed that there tends to be a "I'm nice to you as long as you're nice to me" kind of attitude here. Also, before you're rude to someone who works in the service/retail industry, think about it long and hard. These people deal with your food and your hotel room.They're the ones that make positive things happen for you while your'e visiting. Their job is hard. They get paid very low wages for dealing with grumpy people all day. So for your own positive experience, be nice to them and they will most likely reciprocate. Be nice to other people, regardless of their position. It WILL benefit you. read more

I applaud Denver for its forward thinking and the feeling of constant momentum one feels in the city. However, it seems to be full of so many people with self-centered attitudes. I'm not sure why but I always sense so much disdain for others. Living in Texas for a year, I felt much more of a sense of community there. I feel like I'm always in a traffic jam on the highways in Denver! Real estate can be costly in the metro area. Lower property taxes but higher mortgages. The scenery is beautiful, the air crisp. Denver has interesting cities within itself and areas that have their own uniqueness. Aurora has its own look and feel, as well as Westminster and Arvada up north and south towards Littleton and further to Colorado Springs. All of them have a different vibe to them. The entire city of Denver itself does not necessarily lend to the ease of going from one side of the city to the other which may cause this sort of "separateness." read more

This is just a regular government building but I'm reviewing it because every Christmas holiday this great building gets lit up with spectacular Christmas lights and displays and that's not all..there's always a traditional parade that starts from the City and County Building and continues for 2 miles through the beautiful streets of Downtown Denver. Although it's always a bit chilly, this spectacular parade is not to be missed or the big building for that matter. Don't forget to wear a warm coat and bring your camera..you're gonna need it! read more
