Make sure to get there really early (if ya wanna bring weapons that is)!

I guess everyone's rating of Denver's City and County Building will depend on what their experience there was. There's a 1 star review from someone who didn't think she was treated fairly in small claims court. There's a 3 star review from someone who thought the staff wasn't working hard enough and the lines were too long. Me? I think the old place is lovely. On occasion I show up there for work and to me it's one of the most beautiful buildings in Denver, and usually a joy to visit. Here are some lesser seen perspectives of the building that are pretty cool. Was just there this morning when I shot them. The funniest one is probably the one in front of the entrance which implies that you are most welcome to bring firearms and other weapons into the building, but just not from 7:30-5 M-F:). My favorite happens to be the one looking down the hall with the reflections of the lights on the floor and not a soul in sight, even though it was the middle of the work day. Sign me, David "lights, camera, (judicial) action!" M

I went to the County Courthouse this week to file a name change petition and it went really well. I know courthouses can be intimidating. The building itself is beautiful and the park and the Capital are right there as well. When you arrive you do go through a metal detector for security. I had been emailing with Jordan at the Self Help Desk Center leading up to filing. He was very helpful and always quick to respond. He checked all my paperwork to make sure it was correct before I went downstairs to file. He also went over the entire process with me which was helpful. Downstairs, in the Clerk's Office, the line moved quickly. The man at the counter was nice and quick and efficient, so was the man at the register. I have to go back a few more times during the name change process, but I am not worried about it. I had a delightful time and everything ran really smoothly.

Yes I brought a selfie stick!

They gave me a ticket for expired plates while I was in the DMV purchasing the tags. Talk about unfair.

Art for the sake of art…read more At first glance, it looks like a group of large marble and granite figures, but on closer inspection it is a group of two judges, one female and one male, and four children. Seated outside the Carr Center, the two groups look like they are engaged in an intimate conversation. Nice to be able to walk by the Colorado Yule marble and green granite figures of "Justice for All" that were created by Madeline Wiener, a New York-born, Denver-based sculptor with an international following. Inspired by the warmth of real judges, Wiener tried to create a friendly space for children and their families to be welcome. The statues of the children look so innocent as they try to ingest the wisdom of the justices. Kids can climb or sit on the statues. For their parents, it is a great photo op. Although, I did not enter the actual courthouse, I know that there is more artwork inside as well. Walking through downtown Denver, there is so much public art. This is due to a state law that manadates 1 percent of public building costs be dedicated to the acquisition of art which gave the construction of the Carr Center an art budget of just over $1.7 million. So nice to be able to take a walk and just enjoy art for the sake of art.

As we waited in line to get in the courthouse it went fairly smoothly. I felt bad for the people who called the jurors number and was told to come in just to be told they didn't need to show up especially after waiting 30 minutes in the unusual cold snap we had that day. After the ones who were told to come in and after another 45 minutes wait we were all told there was a stay and we could leave. Thank God.

My number came up, and I had the dreaded jury duty. Arapahoe County has a system for calling in or…read morechecking their website the day/night before. If you are not excused, I advise arriving before 7:30 a.m., when the doors open, so you can get through security quickly and arrive at the jury summons room on time. You fill out another questionnaire (similar to the summons you must bring), which helps the judges and lawyers determine the first round of excusals. If you are "lucky" enough to make it through that round, you will be taken upstairs to the courtroom for the voir dire process. Depending on the number of jurors needed, you may need to stay for lunch. There is a reasonably priced cafeteria with hot and cold options and snacks.
