How I got here: I was walking down the streets of Lutherstadt Wittenberg with my friend, on the way back after spending the afternoon shopping in the local mall. I told my friend, I was craving a good Shawarma and she suggested this new place that had great Falafel wraps. That's how we ended up at Al Rayyan. = Ambience: It's a small place with seats outside. We were greeted by a smiling man behind the counter. We ordered at the counter. Saw as our order was made and took a seat outside with our steaming hot wraps. Food: My friend ordered a Falafel shawarma (wrap) and I got the lamb one. The falafels were made after she ordered so when they came out they were steaming hot! It looked delicious and I regret not ordering a side of falafel for myself. The sheared the lamb from the döner, put the shawarma bread on the pan and then started to lay out the meat on it. I chose garlic sauce on my shawarma. There were other options as well. It comes with lettuce, onions, tomato, chili and other sauces. You can choose to add or remove as per your liking. The size of the wrap is huge! We ordered to eat in house and they added a dollop of sauce on the top (Yumm!!!) You don't get this if you order to-go so if you're planning to walk around and eat, I'd suggest ordering to eat and then walking off with your wraps. I had a bite from my friends Falafel wrap and the falafels were crispy and flavorful. I left with my craving satisfied. As I am writing this, the photo and the thought of it makes my mouth water. Came here on a Thursday at ~11am (to avoid the lunch rush) and it was jam packed with students and working professionals. Luckily the staff here are super efficient yet patient with customers. It's self-service. You order at the counter and they'll call out your number. Many claimed their seats before ordering, which id recommend as there are only ~15 tables inside. Once I ordered, food was ready in ~5min. And it was huge! A fresh flatbread slathered with a delicious garlic sauce and stuffed with warm juicy chicken kebab sliced fresh off the spit and fresh salad mix. The thought of this kebab sandwhich is making me drool. The toppings were almost falling out because of how much they stuffed in. Probably one of the best bites I had in Berlin! Over the years, I have developed a proprietary Döner rating system based on the following categories: -Bread -Meat -Sauce -Salat ...and a more general "synergy" category that tries to evaluate the overall experience of that particular Döner while also serving as a catch-all for other things like price, friendliness, value, etc. My Döner, which is owned by a wonderful Turkish-German named Mezlüt (a baker by training), earns high marks for all of these: -Bread: 4 (hot, crispy, and pretty traditional) -Meat: 5 (plentiful, tasty, and not fatty) -Sauce: 5 (the ever-elusive "Cocktailsoße") -Salat: 5 (fresh) -Synergy: 5 (all elements blended perfectly together from start to finish) When in Berlin, one naturally has the choice of quite literally hundreds of Döner stands, and I am rarely disappointed no matter where I go. But the quality of My Döner--and Mezlüt's friendliness and commitment to his craft (he enjoys his own Döner while there, after all)--not to mention the massive Döner you get here for just 3€, is my new favorite and definitely worth your attention. It doesn't have the unique veggies of Mustafa's or the hype of some other ones, but the fact is that there is no gimmick here. The Gemüse Kebab here was made from spiced chicken sliced from a rotating spit, mixed with fried potatoes and carrots. Then came a variety of fresh vegetables including lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, and onions, and the kebab was finished off with crumbled feta cheese and a choice of sauces (herb, garlic, cocktail, sesame, spicy chili). The seeded bread was toasted and had a nice crusty exterior, and the fillings exploded out of the bread, making for a photogenic dish too! We also ordered the Rüyam Teller, which came with a larger portion of chicken döner, salad, and sauce, as well as a scoop of flavored rice, crispy falafel, and crispy halloumi. Everything we had was delicious and came in generous portions at a good price in an energetic environment--definitely worth the wait!
