I had seen a neurologist at this clinic back in 2013 after suffering a series of mini-strokes…read more Recently I had some concerns that made me want to get a check up and my primary doctor sent a referral to their office. When I called to make an appointment I was advised that Dr. Stambuck had left their practice and moved to Kaiser and that it was sort of a "policy" that none of their neurologists on staff "would accept new patients with existing histories". I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I was being told they wouldn't even give me a consultation just because I had a previous history of neurological related issues. They didn't even ask my name or review my history before advising this. It was just a "Sorry, we won't help you". To me, that is unprofessional and unethical.

In the past 15+ years, I have seen at least 10 neurologists for migraine management in four…read moredifferent states. Without any doubt, Dr. Trevor McNutt is the cream of the crop when it comes to neurology. a) He didn't pull the "oh, so that's what the OTHER doctor said, but I need to run all my own tests (which will cost you $$$) because I don't believe that you know your own health history/I am smarter than your doctor. Instead, he read my questionnaire with my history, asked a few questions, and really engaged me about my own health. b) While I have no idea about his personality in general, he seems nice, genuine and not full of hot air like many doctors. He gets you from the waiting from himself, writes his own prescriptions, talks to you like a person. Plus, his front desk staff is always awesome, timely, and seems happy. That's a good sign. c) He is creative. I've been through pretty much every barrage of meds for my migraines; both preventative and as they happen. However, he busted out not one, but TWO treatments that I haven't tried before. One didn't work, and the other (botox for chronic migraine) cut my migraines from 3-5 a week to about 1 a week. Talke about results. d) He'll go to bat for you with insurance (or at least his office staff will). Very few places have made me feel confident that they have my best interests (health and financial at heart). e) I'm usually in an out in less than 20, more if I have more questions. Little to no time in the waiting room, and since you seem him directly (rather than a slough of PAs), it seems less like a time trap, and more getting stuff done and getting out. I'd be happy to recommend him to any migraine sufferers; he really did change my life.

I developed a really bad case of vertigo late last year, and had it for about 2 months. Some days…read moreit was so severe, I literally felt like I was walking around drunk - everything was spinning, and I felt like I had to hold onto rails when I walked up and down stairs. I figured the condition was largely stress related (I'd never been so stressed out or anxious in my life), or possibly related to sleeping in some kind of bad position. I didn't know much about vertigo, and even though I'd researched it, I wasn't able to figure out a treatment that worked for me. Luckily, it seemed to go away over time - for the most part, though small bouts of vertigo did resurface a few times, but just for a day or two. My sister had the same issue that mysteriously appeared, then disappeared. Well, for whatever reason, I got vertigo again, last week. I don't know if it was triggered by my new aerobic exercise program or doing excessive neck stretching or what, but, all of a sudden the vertigo came back full force, and it was so bad I felt like I had to spend the whole day in bed on Friday. It was not good. I get really depressed when I am not feeling well or if I'm not being productive, so I could feel myself slipping into a really bad funk. Vertigo can make you feel really anxious because you feel really out of control when everything in your head feels like it's starting to spin around for no apparent reason! Well, I started doing more research and am thanking my lucky stars for the fact that I ran across this article, in which a man says he cured his vertigo by doing a simple exercise that was invented by Dr. Foster. You can read it here: https://www.menshealth.com/health/a28679454/benign-paroxysmal-positional-vertigo-treatment/ There was a link for a video she had on YouTube, so I clicked on it and tried it myself. Here's the link, if you want to see how to do the exercise. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQR6b7CAiqk HO - LY - COW. I can't believe this simple, 5 minute exercise actually worked to cure my vertigo, when I'd been STRUGGLING with it for MONTHS, late last year. I do realize that the exercise may not address the underlying cause of the vertigo (I realize I may never know what triggered it), but at least I am back to being a functional human being again. We live in a day and age where it's VERY HARD to find a doctor who is willing to give out information for free. I even commented to a friend of mine, this afternoon, that a TRULY good doctor is one who tries to give you advice that's good enough so you don't even NEED to come in and see them. That is the kind of physician Dr. Foster clearly is. She says in the video that if this doesn't work to fix your vertigo, you can always come in and try other treatment options. Why can't EVERY doctor be like her?? I don't know if Dr. Foster will ever see this but if so, I just want to extend a huge amount of gratitude for sharing this really useful tip. I wish you could get a nobel prize for figuring this out....seriously. For anyone looking for a good neurologist who actually cares about their patients.... give Dr. Foster a call! She obviously cares about helping people to get better, and get on with their lives.

She did not show any empathy and I did not feel heard or respected as the patient. The concept of a bedside manner was completely lost on her. I had a second appointment hoping the first was just a bad day. No, the second appointment was even worse. I found treatment elsewhere.

Not a great experience for me. From the moment I walked in the door I felt uncomfortable. It was…read moreimpossible to get an appointment with the neurologist I was referred to, Dr. Koontz, and I was assured their other neuro docs were very good so I was able to book an appointment for a 2-3 weeks out with someone else. The MA who took me back to the exam room and got me started seemed very confused like she was right out of college and wasn't sure what she was supposed to do. In addition, she only had me remove my pants for the exam, then the doctor needed me to take my long-sleeved top off so he could access my arms. He was respectful and turned his back while I removed the shirt and redonned the gown, even though I told him not necessary as I was wearing she-bra camisole that is not revealing. The neurologist I saw was Dr. Richard Rodriguez-Brizuela, DO, and he is not a great communicator. He is from Venezuela and has been in the US for 20 years, he said, but his English is very difficult to understand. At one point he said something that sounded like, "just one more and then we can depart you." I chuckled and told him that was a cute way to say I could soon go. He had not idea what I was talking about and seemed offended. I asked him to repeat what he had said and he told me I could go after the next set of tests. It was a LOT more and took much longer than, "soon." The whole EMG testing process of my right side from shoulder to foot took 90 minutes and was very painful at times. I had previously seen a neurologist some years ago and had an EMG for the same area to check progression of nerve damage from failed back surgery 27 years ago. That test confirmed what I already knew and I felt nothing but some strong taps and the whole exam only took about 30 minutes. The doc at CO Neurodiagnostic also did my arms saying that's the way they do it and I figured it was no big deal since my hand doctor was concerned about carpal tunnel, which was also confirmed by this EMG. The whole experience felt like a Twilight Zone episode and I don't think I would go there again. Maybe seeing Dr. Koontz would have been a better experience, but I'll never know.

Kept trying to get treatments approved with my insurance and realized they were submitting for the wrong things. I realized that the pain, burning, tighness--Everything going on with my legs--is kind of like when your arm falls asleep and you get a rush of "pins and needles" before the normal feelings return. I'm also getting B12 injections into my legs to help with the neuropathy. Things changed so fast with their system that I decided to start a #Neurofeedback program. I'm about 10 sessions in and am finding my concentration levels are going up fast--I'm finding myself reading more and more with each passing day!! I thought I had just grown to hate reading, but my brain was maybe just oversaturated. My therapist on Kaua'i recommended "The Body Keeps the Score" by Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, which discusses how neurofeedback programs help the body and mind. Now, I am fortunate to have the time to recover too--any athlete will tell you, it's good to work your muscles, but RECOVERY time is equally important, so back at home, I'm giving my body/brain a chance to rest and not be stressed. I'm looking forward to other modalities available from PIH!! Their staff is so warm and welcoming to me everytime I pop in!! Mahalo!!
