There is a…read moreshort walk to the "viewpoint" where you can see the arch from a few miles away, but there is a longer hike where you can actually get up close to the arch itself. I went to the viewpoint because I was short on time and couldn't do the whole hike. Even from far away you can see pretty clearly what it is, and that there are points on the arch that are skinnier than the rest so it looks like it could easily fall (hence the name "delicate arch"). I think it's worth it to at least go to the viewpoint if you don't have time to do the full trail! It's just a short drive off the main road to get to the parking lot that leads to the viewpoint, and the walk takes about 10 min or less (there is a pretty good sized hill though -- be mindful if you have mobility restrictions that getting to the top of the viewpoint could be difficult). Of note, there are a couple national park bathrooms at the lot (the kind with sanitizer that don't flush). They had just been pumped out when I arrived (saw the staff undoing the pumps and leaving) so they were actually very clean and didn't have any smell. I don't know if they're usually like that but it was one of the cleanest experiences I've had involving a national park bathroom!

The first known photo of this arch was taken in 1906, and it appeared in LIFE magazine in 1953.  We climbed up to the top of the hill, which is opposite the arch. The Green Rock signifies the change of time. The green sediments come from a humid era in Archer's Jurassic past, which included braided rivers, floodplains, and a nearby volcano. Volcanic ash full of iron settled atop clay, silt, and other sediments here.

Poison Spider Mesa in Moab is home to multiple recreational activities. The trailhead and parking…read morelot are located approximately 6 miles west of Moab. Most people come here for the 16-mile 4×4 and mountain bike or ATV loop trail that has arches and cliffs with beautiful scenic views. If you are a hiker and want a shorter hike, there are one-mile hiking trails that branch off the trailhead like the Longbow Arch and Poison Spider Bench. Parking is free at Poison Spider Mesa but can be tight for larger vehicles. There is additional roadside parking leading up to the main lot. We had just hiked the nearby Corona Arch Trail and were too tired to do another hike. We decided to come here to Poison Spider because there is a short side hike to see some petroglyphs and dinosaur tracks. The Poison Spider Mesa dinosaur track site has some theropod footprints preserved in limestone blocks. Around ten carnivorous dinosaur footprints formed 190 million years ago can be seen here. There are also some nearby petroglyphs that depict human and animal figures. We did this short hike and took pictures of the footprints before heading back to Moab. We enjoyed the view overlooking Moab Valley while on this short trail. Poison Spider Mesa got its name from a local legend about a girl named Mary Jane Francis who died here from being bitten by a venomous spider in the late 1800s.

Seriously beautiful but seriously dangerous, so don't take your kids! If you haven't been out here, it is so worth the drive. If you don't have a Jeep, you'd probably want to come in from 313, not 191. It's about 5 miles along the dirt road. Not sure I'd do it in anything but a 4WD! But maybe that's just me. I would thoroughly recommend checking this place out.

Mill Creek Canyon Trailhead is a beautiful hike that I'd rate as moderate--some sections require…read moreclimbing over rocks, but nothing too extreme. Luna handled it with ease, hopping right up and then looking back at us as if to say, "You coming?" The trail follows the river nearly the entire way to a waterfall, which is just under a mile in, with another mile back. You don't necessarily have to do the full hike--there are plenty of spots along the creek where you can stop, let your dog swim, or cool off before turning back. If you do continue, the waterfall at the end makes for a rewarding finish. The water is cold but refreshing, and I can imagine it gets crowded on weekends. Luckily, when we went (weekday afternoon), it wasn't too busy. This trail is very dog-friendly, and most dogs are off-leash. That's great if your pup plays well with others, but if your dog isn't comfortable around other dogs, this may not be the best choice. Luna swam in the creek several times along the way and capped it off with a dip in the waterfall--she absolutely loved it. We didn't swim ourselves since we didn't bring suits, but next time we might. This is definitely a place we'd return to and a spot I'd highly recommend for dog owners.

In A Nutshell: -Mill…read moreCreek Trail is a lovely trail that can stretch as far as 7-10 miles per the local I spoke to during my hike. -When you follow it initially from the parking lot, it will take you to the waterfall, that distance is about 1 mile one-way. -The hike was awesome during the morning (7am), barely saw many people. -You can catch a beautiful sunrise just over the waterfall too (see photo). -You will hike through the creek, dirt paths, brush & rocky edges. -Some reviews recommend water shoes, but I just went barefoot & I was fine. -The water was warm in mid-August & it wasn't very deep even at the waterfall (went up to my thighs). Overall, if you want to start off your day on a short, relaxing & fulfilling hike, you need to come here. You'll leave very happy & energized!

Green algae growth had me hesitate. But calling my buddy again he reassured this is the bottle fill stop. Taste ~ pure, so pure, tasteless. No hard minerals and refreshingly cold. What's in the name? IDK but drinking there by myself... Pretty amazing find and a nice start in exploring Moab!

Or, you can chance it by driving right up to the spring. There is room on the side of the road for about 3 cars. The taste is just a tiny bit minerally and much better than most municipal tap waters. Impressive hike to go to the Morning Glory Natural bridge through Grandstaff canyon. 4.5 miles…read moreround trip. Only to be careful is poison oak. I'm very sensitive to it, so I was extra cautious not to touch any plants and had long sleeve and long pants. The natural bridge was very cool. The canyon is gorgeous. Worth the visit for sure.

Grandstaff Canyon is one of several hikes close to Moab that are recommended by multiple…read moreguidebooks, so be prepared to share the trail with others. Regardless, it is good for a half-day adventure, especially in warmer months. Being on BLM land, there's no entrance fee. It's also dog-friendly, so you'll see plenty of pups on the hike, usually sopping wet and happy. (But maybe don't go out of your way to pet them in late spring, when there's also plenty of poison ivy along the trail). The hike is about 5 miles total (round trip) that ends in Morning Glory natural bridge, which turns out NOT to be an arch. (Natural bridges form primarily from the flow of a stream, whereas natural arches are typically a combo of wind and water). Over half of the hike is fairly flat, along a beautiful, bucolic, wooded valley surrounded by high sandstone cliffs. The trail crosses and re-crosses a clear, burbling stream punctuated by quiet pools and mini falls. We found plenty of spots to pull off the trail and enjoy the beauty, and I stopped to dip my toes in at one point. If you continue on beyond this flatter section, there's a gentle uphill grade, some on open sandstone, to get to the rear of the canyon. The reward for this extra effort is the stunning natural bridge, which in hot weather can provide a cool, shady respite before retracing your steps back to the trailhead. Due to extreme popularity, and the small lot, parking can be a pain here. Coming from Moab, we just continued past the lot for a hundred yards or so, turned left, and parked in the large, raised dirt area on the Colorado River side of the road. There were plenty of spots, and it was a short walk back to the trailhead.
