I crossed the Delaware Memorial Bridge and I'm happy to report... it does exactly what a bridge is supposed to do. It bridges. And not just sometimes. Every time I've crossed it, it has successfully bridged Delaware and New Jersey with no hesitation. That level of consistency deserves recognition. Driving across it, you definitely feel the size. It's long, a little elevated, and you get that open water on both sides that reminds you this isn't just a regular overpass. It feels like you're actually going somewhere. As far as putting in work in the City of Brotherly Love, this bridge is up there with the likes of Julius Erving, Allen Iverson, Charles Barkley, Joe Frazier, and Bernard Hopkins. Just steady putting in work, day in and day out. Traffic moves how it moves depending on the day, but the bridge itself? Solid. Reliable. Doing its job with no complaints. I'm no engineer, but I respect a structure that wakes up every day and chooses to bridge. Overall, if you're looking for a bridge that delivers on its core responsibility, this one gets it done. 5 stars for consistent bridging. read more

The Delaware Memorial Bridge connects the southern tip of New Jersey with the northern tip of Delaware and is a critical part of Interstate 95. The bridge which is actually 2 bridges running east and west over the lower reaches of the Delaware River before it expands into the Atlantic Ocean. The cable suspension structure with 2 soaring steel towers each are of similar design to the Throgs Neck & Bronx-Whitestone bridges in New York. We always pass this way on our trips south to Washington DC, Virginia & North Carolina. The DMB is a memorial to the fallen soldiers of World War II, the Korean Conflict, Vietnam and Operation Desert Storm, with one span opening in 1951 and the second added in 1968. It is administered by the Delaware River and Bay Authority, a joint DE/NJ agency. A one-way toll is collected on the westbound side at the toll booths on the Delaware side. Current tolls for passenger cars have gone up recently to $6 cash, but held at $5 for EZ Pass users. The 4 traffic lanes on each span/direction keeps traffic flowing, but can get backed-up during rush hours due to their clinging to the use of tollbooths. There are 12 toll lanes, but usually 4 are closed, 5-6 are for EZ Pass only and 2-3 are Cash & EZ Pass. I don't know why they don't eliminate the toll plaza altogether and go cashless like other major crossings. SMH read more

it's actually two very similar suspension bridges erected about 17 years apart (1951 / 1968) and they are the finest Delawarean bridges across the Delaware River ever. DMB is a pair of 2-mile long toll bridges carrying I-295 / US Rte 40 some 170' above the Delaware; since 1992 it's free to go east but coming out of New Jersey will set a person back $5-american even though you'd be excused for thinking it would be the other way around because of the traffic conditions on the respective sides... and thank you for all your assistance Mr Jim Ignatowski read more

Approaching the DMB (from either direction) is the penultimate sign that that you're finally close to Delaware OR you're not too far from home (NJ). For the longest time they held the line with their toll pricing one way $5. Now, smh it's $6 and yeah that sucks. Of course, no increase for e-zpass customers as an "incentive" to either stay or join. How greedy! Nevertheless, the view is beautiful approaching and crossing the bridge. Cool bridge on my cross country trip that crosses yep the Delaware River. It came right after the NJ Turnpike ended and I was treated to a spectacular twilight display as I crossed. I was transiting through and did not stop but there did not appear to me much around the approaches on either side. However, there were a few parks in the run up and heading away from it. read more

Not to be confused with the CTRL+ALT-unaware Mammarial Bridge, which is when you try to crash your computer because someone has caught you looking at boobs on it. The Delaware Memorial Bridge costs $4 if you're traveling south, and it's free if you're coming north. And it saves you a little bit of time if you don't want to go through Wilmington, but personally I'd rather go through the city and save $4, it's still highway and a couple of miles less driving with a slightly lower speed limit, because to be honest it's a few less miles and sometimes it's actually quicker. It's usually pretty quick but with not a lot of wait time so I appreciate that. It's beautiful and gorgeous and splendid and massive and you can see it from miles away, and when you're on the bridge you can see for miles. The views are amazing. I just wish you didn't have to pay for it. read more

Driving on I-95 in the Delaware area, you might be passing by the Delaware Memorial bridge. The Delaware Memorial Bridge is a dual-span suspension bridge crossing the Delaware River. The toll bridges carry Interstate 295 and U.S. Route 40 and is also the link between Delaware and New Jersey. It is also one of only two crossings of the Delaware River with both U.S. Highway and Interstate Highway designations, the other being the Benjamin Franklin Bridge. The bridges provide a regional connection for long-distance travelers. While not a part of Interstate 95, they connect two parts of the highway: the Delaware Turnpike (Interstate 95 in Delaware) on the south side with the New Jersey Turnpike (later Interstate 95 in New Jersey) on the north side. They also connect Interstate 495, U.S. Route 13, and Route 9 in New Castle, Delaware with U.S. Route 130 in Pennsville Township, New Jersey (at the settlement of Deepwater, New Jersey). Like a bridge over serene waters... it was daybreak as we approached this riveting metal marvel. I wasn't even driving but the hairs on my head began to tingle... My heart always beats a little faster when I approach a bridge... I instinctively recall all the survival tips I've heard about being trapped in a car underwater. I think about the impending inky darkness...Yep, my mind goes there... Then once I'm nearing the descent, my heartbeat slows and then the wonder sets in. Bridges are amazing structures! Tons of steel, concrete and cables erected over a water body connecting the chasm between two land formations. A modern miracle that I sometimes take for granted. I imagine our forefathers boating across these waters before clever architects designed these majestic but somewhat intimidating giant skeletons. The Delaware Bridge climbs relatively steeply to a spine chilling pinnacle. Its pale green arches standing tall against the pink sky reaching up to greet the dawning sun. One comforting aspect to this bridge is the width, I'm not fond of narrow bridges (or any bridges for that matter). I don't know why thinking the added width might afford me a few extra seconds of safety. I'm just being lulled into a false sense of security. Nevertheless, I was glad to have Yelp keeping me preoccupied with a review to take my off plunging to my death! Haha! My travel mates reassured me and eased my anxiety! I thank the bridge and my crew for their support! read more

This bridge is very well-maintained compared to most. There are very few potholes. The speed limit is perfect for it.

This is a nice long bridge to travel on, but the one major negative factor to reduce the rating to 3 stars is the constant traffic congestion. When traveling Southbound, once you go thru the toll booth...there is always a major delay due to ongoing/endless road construction. The congestion is a result of the reduced speed limits and lane closures. So, when you are traveling Southbound--especially over the weekend--expect to add 20+ minutes to your commute. The one thing I like is the price of the toll is really cheap! **Once the entire construction projects are completed in 2022, then I'll change my review...maybe !!** read more

They need to finish fixing the bridge Be glad when they finally finished. Traffic is terrible coming back into jersey.

The Delaware Memorial Bridge takes about two minutes to drive across, before the bridge Delaware and Southern New Jersey were connected by ferry so there's no doubt that method of crossing the river took much longer and carried significant risk, even if you were in front of the line and managed to board the first boat across. These two structures both were built using the same design to look identical even though the spans were constructed in different decades using different technologies and are anything but identical. I've crossed these mammoth structures a number of times over the years and like others have stated it's a victory to arrive here if you're southbound and the beginning of a painful ride if you're northbound approaching the New Jersey turnpike and points north of here. These bridges have experienced their share of woes over the years with fires and stress fractures that has forced shutdowns for renovations and repairs and these issues have caused some ill will for those that have to commute daily but the alternative is almost unthinkable. Yes I'm a fan of this bridge knowing that I may be somewhat bias being I have never experience any delays or issues crossing over, but on the other hand this bridge isn't capable of causing any of those things - it's the people who are to blame... "In bridge designing, the aesthetics are quite as important as engineering details. It is a crime to build an ugly bridge." This is a quote from consulting engineer and designer Outhmar Hermann Ammann who participated in the design of this magnificent pair of bridges as well as a few other well known crossings you may recognized - The Triborough, The Henry Hudson, The Bayonne, The Goethals, The Bronx-Whitestone, and The Marine Parkway bridges. He was also responsible for managing the building of the Lincoln Tunnel and San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge as well as The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, The Walt Whitman Bridge to name a few I am quite sure his designs and engineering is responsible for countless others... read more

This pretty pair of suspension bridges crosses the Delaware River at Wilmington, DE, just south of Philadelphia. I had a five stars experience because I was paying cash and there were five "full service" lanes open for no waiting to pay the toll, which was twice as many toll takers as they did at the end of the New Jersey Turnpike just a couple of miles back and six minutes ago. If you're going to charge me money to drive on your infrastructure, at least do it efficiently! Nice bridge, all lanes open, well lit for night time. read more

Road Trip!! Coming from NY anything involving "95" can literally give you nightmares. Sometimes the idea of taking the Cross Bronx to the GWB can dictate your whole trip. So, when you finally do hit the road and manage to make it to and thru the NJ turnpike that's a great thing. However, seeing the Delaware Memorial Bridge on the horizon is like seeing a rainbow over a pot gold while eating a bowl of lucky charms all dressed up in kelly green! Now... it actually feels like the road trip has finally begun, you are finally getting somewhere. From this point on, no matter your destination, it will be easy breezy. Unless of course you didn't plan properly and you get caught in that DMV (Delaware, Maryland, Virginia) traffic. If that's the case I say just make sure to enjoy the view because it's bound to be a long ride. read more

The Delaware Memorial Bridge is the bridge along Interstate 295 connecting Delaware and New Jersey. The Delaware Memorial Bridge opened in 1951, which spans 440 feet high and just under 10,800 feet long. The second span, headed into Delaware, was dedicated and opened in 1968. For the majority of the span, it is actually located in Delaware. My most recent visit across this bridge was on October 8, 2019. The Delaware Memorial Bridge does have a toll. However, you are tolled only in one direction. You are tolled when heading west on Interstate 295 South going into Delaware, but not when heading east on Interstate 295 North going from Delaware into New Jersey. The toll is $5, but it is $4.75 if you have an EZ Pass. Depending on the weather and skies, you can see the bridge in the distance when in St. George's, DE heading north along DE 1. It's better when you see the bridge up close though. The Delaware Memorial Bridge is a beautiful sight, but you can tell that it has been around quite a while, which is probably why you always see some type of work being done on that bridge. In my experience, there always seems to be at least one lane closed while traveling along the bridge, whether it's headed into New Jersey or out of New Jersey. As long as you aren't the one driving, you can see some great views of the Delaware River. On my most recent visits across this bridge, traffic was not an issue. The only bottleneck of sorts was headed into Delaware at the toll plaza. I have the EZ Pass, so we actually got through very quickly. Overall, this bridge is a very easy way to get between Delaware and New Jersey. The bridge has been around for many years and I will continue to use this bridge in the future if my travels take me this way again in the future. read more

I have to say that these were some spectacular bridges to cross. I was making the long haul home after a few days away and decided that I wanted to venture into Delaware, what better way to do so than to cross this set of bridges. I liked the design of the bridges and the color is different than what I am used to coming from Pittsburgh. The green makes it feel like it is one with nature. Crossing at night makes them feel even bigger than they already are. I do have to say that this set of bridges was probably one of the easiest that I had crossed in all of my journeying I had done that week. The price felt a little steep to me, but I understand when it comes to paying a toll. Maintenance on a bridge can be a little overwhelming. read more

I crossed through this bridge twice on my day trip to New Jersey. It was a beautiful drive due to all the greenery that is found along the way. This bridge was a highlight as I could see for a distance over the water. It is a suspension bridge, and it's a cool feeling driving on it. It was broad daylight when I drove through it en route to NJ. In spite of it being the middle of the day, there was not a lot of traffic. When I drove through here again, the sun was setting. The sunsets are not too dramatic as seen from the bridge, but the view was still as great. There was no traffic on my way back from Baltimore, which was also great. read more

This bridge has commonalities with its PA counterparts. There's seemingly always construction. There's seemingly always traffic. It is ugly. But it works if you need it...being that it is a bridge and that is its job. It will help you get to either NJ or DE. You pay going into Delaware. One thing I don't like? I can see the water below while en route. Freaks me out. read more

No toll at all would be a nice twist on the everlasting money extraction continuum of crossing water from above. But four bucks ain't so bad! -- comparatively speaking. If you've seen one bridge, you have seen them all with few notable differences. Ones a little taller, ones a little wider -- one rides like the Ho Che Min trail, the other is quite smooth. Paying four dollars for a smooth surfaced bridge with a view is a good deal to me. Perhaps one attribute that stands out to me when crossing over and taking in a quick right -- left glimpse, is the surrounding terrain. The mountain range that boarders the water like a mighty fortress makes life seem big and small at the same time. We are the small. read more

The view from this bridge is spectacular. On a clear day you can see the New York City skyline in the shadows. I love crossing the Delaware River Gap on this suspension bridge structure is high over the river. $4.00 toll to leave New Jersey. no toll driving into Jersey. It is easy to navigate, no twist, or turns just a smooth drive, the lanes are clearly marked. Crossing the Delaware Memorial Bridge is much more than a transition from Delaware to New Jersey. It's a huge piece of our country's history that one experiences from a vantage view atop a picturesque bridge. As you approach the bridge, whether from I-95 or Hwy 13, the first view of the majestic structure in the distance prompts one to wish the moment could be captured in time. The closer you get, the more history calls you. The bridge, which I must find a way to stop and photograph, is beautiful and commanding. It is well fitting to it's being a watch tower of the river on which George Washington made the further upriver historic crossing. Do you think the toll plaza personnel would welcome a Virginia driver for a photo op? One of my vehicles has a Delaware EZPass. So I should be entitled. Right? As others have mentioned, the toll is only collected when traveling from New Jersey to Delaware. Are you listening Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel? You collect it in both directions, at a much higher cost!! Pay close attention to your lane in the toll plaza if you decide to return via Hwy 13. Stay to the right. And be prepared for quick lane changes. Delaware Memorial Bridge, I love you! Travel from Virginia to New Jersey (or further) if only to experience it's majesty. read more

This is one of my favorite east coast bridges, mainly because it is so easy to navigate on and around. The bridge has tolls ($4 heading south toward Maryland, I think) and I've been one of the lucky ones that hasn't been trapped in a significant traffic snarl while going over this bridge. Further, upon entering New Jersey, the rest areas + their employees are remarkably helpful in terms of giving you traveling & traffic tips. The bridge itself has really good views in crossing the Delaware river while heading into New Jersey.
